DVD vol 1 and 2 - opinion please!!

Hi all -

Has anyone purchased the DVD set? If so, is it much different than the episodes on tape? If I have them on tape, are they worth buying? Please advise!!!

Yes! They are definitely worth buying. All the episodes have extra footage in them that you haven't seen before.

There are also some behind the scenes documentaries on them.

Please note, you can easily win them on the TBS Website every weeknight at 7:30pm. When they air an episode they have an interactive quiz, and each night, the top ten winners each get the vol. 1 & 2 set. I think starting soon they will be giving out vol. 3 & 4 which will be released in a couple of weeks.

The review you reference is hideously inaccurate. The ten (twelve, reall) episodes on the DVD set are the results of the online vote for the ten best Friends episodes, and are arranged in chronological order over the two discs. While I question some of these episodes as my personal ten best, and I'm sure the commercialization of the release had a factor in that, it's still a good buy.

Technically speaking, the discs are essentially flawless. The video and audio quality shine through beautifully in on my player/TV setup. I really liked the fact that these episodes were re-editted for this release too, removing the commercial break pauses and adding in deleted footage. The extras are minimal, but that's not what I usually buy discs for. A commentary track for some of the episodes would've been nice, though.

Some people say they'd rather have the season DVD sets like the Euro releases, but I'm much happier having most of my favourite episodes on DVD instead of the whole lot. The Euro DVDs are also apparently editted as they are on TV, which is a minus for me. Since it's not likely the whole series will be released on DVD for many years in this world of syndication and cable channels, I'm quite happy with what I have.

So in short - get the set. Actually, wait a couple weeks and buy the current two discs packaged with the new third and fourth volumes, and hopefully save a few bucks.

No, they are as originally shown in the US (except for the Van Damme one).

That's what I mean - they don't contain all the extra stuff that the DVD version does, in any case. And what's this about the Van Damme episode?

There were one or two scenes that were only shown in the original US airing, and never in the UK, not even on DVD.

I remember downloading The One That Could Have Been Parts 1 and 2 and I was disappointed to find out that there were parts edited out that were originally seen in the US. When I asked my friend from the UK, he said that there were in fact some parts taken out on the DVD release.

I would recommend them too, the only downside for me - and it wasn't that much - was the behind the scenes part, all of which seemed to be about the making of the London episode. It's not that I wouldn't be interested in such a thing - I would. It's just that none of the little interview-lets struck me as very informative. It was a little like listening to interviews of many sports athletes - nothing but cliches.
