Kind of a spoiler, but not much of one...

There's not much to say, except Ross tells Ben he's part Jewish as he tries to teach him about Hanukkah.

If it was Ben's mom who was Jewish, she would have been the one to teach Ben about a Jewish holiday.

Why did it take this long for the writers to decide this? They hinted at it years ago, but as far as I saw Ross and Monica were portrayed as being completely Christian. They certainly didn't talk about Channukah last year.

Interesting thing is, the question did not come up during the argument between Joey and Ross over who would be godfather to Chandler and Monica's children.

I disagree, both from the typecasting of the Geller parents (Christina Pickles is kind of WASPy and Elliott Gould is emphatically Jewish), and the fact that, as you pointed out, Monica is more into Christmas, and in other ways more like their mother, while Ross is more like their dad. (I was really surprised to read on this newsgroup that Monica had a bat mitzvah ceremony. I don't remember the episode where that was mentioned.) Either way, they all seem pretty secular.

I agree--I've never heard any reference to Monica recognition of her Jewish faith--including an alleged bat mitzvah (can anyone tell me when this was mentioned?). I wouldn't have asked the original "friends religious preferences?" question if I had known she had a bat mitzvah.

I also agree that Monica seems much more into the Christian faith than the Jewish one...for example, I was watching a rerun the other night. Monica screamed to Rachel "Get the book" and Rachel handed her a Bible that was sitting on a table by the window seat. Monica said (questioningly) "THE Bible?" (as if she wanted anothe book).

My apologies to my Jewish friends if I'm totally off base, but I was under the impression that the Jewish holy book is the Torah, which differs from the Bible because it only contains the Old Testament, rather than the old and the new. I know that some people have religious texts in their homes as a form of *literature* rather than for their religious purposes, but this struck me as strange that it was out on display rather than on a bookshelf.

It has been mentioned in several Friends books that their Dad is Jewish and their Mum isn't. I have to say I don't remeber myself the mention of Monica's 'bat mitzvah' but I do remember Ross saying that he wanted to buy a present for he for Hanukah instead of Christmas a few series back (secret santa type thing).
