Some TV Networks to Cover Bush Speech

NEW YORK (AP) - ABC, CNN, Fox News Channel, MSNBC, and CNBC planned live coverage of President Bush (news - web sites)'s speech on the fight against terrorism Thursday night.

NBC decided not to air the speech. CBS still hadn't announced its decision early Thursday afternoon.

It was a difficult decision for the broadcast networks - either interrupting their prime-time schedules in a sweeps month or risking that they not appear patriotic in wartime.

The Bush administration did not formally request that the networks clear their schedules, as it often does for major White House addresses or news conferences, network officials said.

``Given that the White House did not request time on the network, we thought it was sufficient to cover the event on our cable networks,'' said NBC News spokeswoman Alex Constantinople.

NBC is airing ``Friends,'' television's most popular show, at the time Bush is speaking.

ABC spokesman Jeffrey Schneider said: ``We just made a determination that it was important and we're going to carry the president's speech.''

It won't affect all of the US, the speech aired here (West Coast) at 5PM....luckily we haven't had to be interrupted as much as the East Coast :(
