Friends in Germany?

Hi group. Does anyone know, if the 3rd season has been announced on German DVD? I wouldn�t mind the English versions but my girlfriend needs the German translations. Thanks in advance. Send me an e-mail or whatever, I�m desperate :-)

Yep, if you NEED to watch the german dubbed shows because of your girlfriend, you are indeed desperate.

My advice: Dump the girl and get one that at least understands english :-)

It is quite hard to find ppl who know English in Germany (well, not as hard as France). They should start subtitling like most countries so ppl can also learn English. I'm sure I'd like that once they get a hang of reading subs, hearing the original voices, and understanding both.

My friends there stopped going to the movies and rent DVDs from amazon.com instead, and they love it.

Hehe, I beg to differ. It depends on the people you meet though. None of my friends does not understand English. Everyone loves to go see the movies in the original version (which is in deed not that easy, except when you're living in a city, where the GIs used to be). Sure, if you go to the next plumber and talk to him in English, he probably won't understand a single word, but everyone who went to the 'grammar school' is very likely to understand English. A lot of my English friends do indeed complain, that they don't get to learn German, because everyone is talking English to them. Go try speaking English in France, Italy, Spain, Portugal or Brasil. In the latter one, you might even get along better with German in some cities (LOL). Of course German isn't a very important language, so I wouldn't try using German in neither the UK nor the US. But neither French nor Spanish would be that much better, so talking about foreign languages, Germans aren't the worst, imho (of course the dutch and the skandinavian people are even better with foreign languages).

I agree. We sure should have the original versions with subtitles. :-( Dubbed versions suck ass. I wouldn't even care for the subtitles.

IME, oddly enough, since German is an elective in most schools whereas three years of French is compulsory, you'll probably find that, speaking to 20/30/40somethings, you'll get more response trying German. People who learn German at school here tend to be more motivated to learn it, and it stays with you longer. Speaking to most Brits in French will get you a blank look, but German might just get some kind of response, even if it's one of "slow down and speak English if you can". They'd be more likely to at least understand the gist of the question...

There are 4 "passable" German-speakers in my office, but only one of us speaks French well enough to reply to a question in French. (We get a lot of non-Brits through our office because of what we do, and on average I hear 15 languages a day.)

Are you kidding ? Frenchpeople suck at foreign languages ! I'm French and 'm not afraid to say that France is one of the worst European countries concerning foreign languages... Many German people speak english, but the most amazing are the Dutch : I've heard that 90% oh them were speaking english !

Any dutch people aroud here ?

I'm living in Holland for now and I haven't met any Hollander who can't speak English. Most of them speak very well. Hollanders are multilingual because of the school system here, I think.

My bf says he had to learn English at 10, and in high school French and German as well. They know being multilingual will possibly get you further in life. The Scandinavians think so too.

I'm one! Most Dutch know at least 4 languages: French, German, English and Spanish. My French sucks, but I'm fluent in English (raised in Canada when I was young), German is a lot like Dutch so that;s not so hard and Spanish is easier than most people realize. It just takes some practice.
