For all the Dutch fans who saw this episode on Sunday...

609 "TOW Ross Got High"

This ensemble episode was such a joy!

After the last two I had been expecting a steady decline in the quality of the show as Janine assumed an increasing importance in the storylines, but instead her appearance lasted only 43 seconds. Even Gunther has had bigger parts in the show!

It's Thanksgiving, and Monica has invited her parents, but first she must warn Chandler that she's never admitted their relationship to them. Even worse, the reason is that Jack & Judy hate him. This leads to a wonderful joke as Chandler promises that his charm will win them over, as indeed he won Monica, but she argues that he'd never get them *that* drunk!!!

Since Chandler is living with Monica, Ross is more like Joey's best bud, and Janine invites them to a boozy uptown Thanksgiving party with all her dancer friends, but Monica won't let them go until they've eaten. She is showing enormous faith in Rachel by letting her prepare dessert, without any back-up - presumably she remembers how much she was hurt by Judy who once expected her cooking to "Pull A Monica".

Phoebe arrives looking gorgeous as usual, and notice that all three women are dressed in red, while all the three guys are dressed in blue. But when Monica's parents turn up, Chandler gets off on the wrong foot by assuming that the dandruff on Jack's shoulder is snow - in November? Ah, I suppose that could happen in America.

Meanwhile, Phoebe reveals to Rachel that she's been having erotic dreams about Jack Geller. This could be the beginning of an extremely interesting storyline where Phoebe gets her revenge for losing Richard Burke to Monica by having an affair with her father. But sadly after a nap between courses she informs Rachel that he cheated on her in the dream. This little story resembled the time a dream made her mad at Ross, but it was worth it for the sublime detail where Cousteau's pet seahorse was totally coming onto her! Notice how at well at ease Rachel is with her now.

In a wonderful moment that proves Season Six can kick ass, Rachel proudly tells Ross & Joey that she's preparing a traditional English trifle, with multiple layers of sponge cake, jam, custard, raspberries, beef sauteed with peas & onions, bananas, and whipped cream on top...

The guys are no less stunned than we in the audience, and discover that some of the pages in the recipe book have been stuck together, so they *immediately* blame Chandler, making a rude joke at his expense.

What presumably happened was that the pages became accidentally glued together with the ingredients of some previous meal, and poor Rachel has incorporated part of a recipe for Shepherd's Pie. (In fact that should be lamb, since the beef equivalent is Cottage Pie, but never mind.)

But before Ross & Joey can warn anyone, another crisis develops. Judy lets slip that the reason they've always hated Chandler is that he smokes pot, whereas it was really Ross who'd once pinned the blame on Chandler.

The scene when Ross confesses has caused much confusion, since Chandler happens to misunderstand. Ross was not caught at college, but at home in his bedroom during the Spring Break of his sophomore year.

When Chandler tells Monica that Ross was caught smoking pot in college, he's got it wrong. But that's not surprising, for it does make the third cruel thing that Ross has done to him as a student, after naming him "Sir Limps-A-Lot" when he lost a toe, and telling everyone that Chandler was gay in order to steal away a girl he liked.

While Joey warns everyone else about the trifle, Ross avoids confessing to his parents by distracting Rachel in the hallway, but unable to think of what to say, he ends up 'flirting' with her as though she is the pizza delivery girl. Nobody would never know that Rachel is his wife, (divorce pending), and sadly she rebuffs his advances, once again dashing hopes of the poor R&R fans.

Joey teaches the company how to act pleased with the trifle. His acting lessons are always fun because although they seem daft they then come true, and this was no exception as Monica pretends to enjoy the hideous concoction. Phoebe very cleverly avoids eating the trifle on the grounds that she's a vegetarian, and the others escape by taking their trifle with them to (not) eat in private.

This just leaves Ross who bravely eats it to please Rachel, and Joey who gobbles it up - "What's to not to like?" he asks! When she cross-examines Chandler he makes excuses about a bird grabbing his trifle, which closely resembles Rachel's excuses for no longer having the presents that people bought her, but this time she didn't seem to notice...

Monica runs out of patience, so confesses to her parents on Ross's behalf, which leads to a marvellous sequence of escalating tattle-tales as she & her brother reveal childhood secrets to Jack & Judy, culminating with the news that Ross has married & divorced Rachel. However, this does not mean that the divorce has come through yet, since it's still too early.

Everyone feels the need to join in, including Rachel as she discovers her mistake, but oh joy, at long last I actually *liked* Judy Geller as she took pains to answer each person's confession kindly but honestly, and in a heartwarming moment she thanked Chandler for being such a good friend to Ross over the years - and now that he's taken on Monica as well, he is a wonderful human being!!!

This was a brilliant piece of work by Gregory S.Malins who has written some lovely episodes in the past, and his idea of the Gellers pitting Chandler against Monica & Ross was very clever.

Indeed, the story was such that I'm prepared to bet that anyone who read a spoiler in advance would not have enjoyed it quite so much. I seems to me that there was a delicacy about this script that depended on you not knowing anything in advance, as compared to some episodes where you can chant the lines in advance & it all just adds to the fun.

The whole cast (the main six and two long-standing guest artists) pulled together into a strong ensemble, Monica wasn't too weird, we had nice R&R and C&J moments, and Phoebe was of course 'different'. But best of all there was very little of Janine, which brings me to a curious conclusion.

Could it be that Janine's story was cut back, and the irrelevant Phoebe story invented to fill the holes? If you watch the opening again, it is clear that a punchline was being set up, where Ross & Joey finally escape from the apartment, and arrive at the dance studio, only to discover that Janine's dancer friends were all male...

No spoilers PLEASE from anyone who has already seen episodes 610-625.

Oh yeah it does..especially on the east coast and the midwest. It snowed last weekend, then 2 days later it's 60 degrees again. Weird weather..but yeah at least in Ohio, snow in late November is normal.
