Troll – Someone who makes posts of an inflammatory nature to get people riled up. A troll typically does not reply, they just breeze by, ruffling as many feathers as possible. They’re purpose is not to engage in a constructive discussion but to irritate as many people as possible. If they do reply it is usually to further irritate the situation. Ignore trolls, don’t respond, that’s exactly what they want you to do.

There is none. All Americans watching Friends have already known. For non-Americans, who cares? This is not alt.tv.friends.uk or alt.tv.friends.xyz. You are welcome to join the American friends discussion group, but it is your choice that you might read spoilers here. After westcoast broadcasting, there is no need to put spoiler space. Even those who taped and read ng first should not complain.

I still think spoiler space should be used. It is a courtesy. True it doesn't say alt.tv.friends.uk, but at the same time it doesn't say alt.tv.friends.us. I think us Americans should care. We cannot be so arrogant all the time. Just because we think we are the biggest and baddest country doesn't mean we cannot be polite. Plus I enjoy the viewpoints of viewers overseas.

JLplsSSmcwrapperalt.tv.friends

Rebels?! Why are they rebels for not wanting to get spoilers without warning?

I am an American and I don't think it's too much of a bother not to post spoilers in the subject header or put a few blank lines at the beginning of a spoiler post. It takes, what, about 10 extra seconds to do both?!

Um, actually, this *isn't* the USA group. The USA group is "alt.tv.friends.northamerica". No alt.tv.friends.northamerica from my ISP server. When a series originates from US, it carries no such suffix. If a series originates from UK, that ng will belong to UK by default. No suffix is necessary. If it is imported to US and the second ng is formed, it will carry alt.tv.some-series-name.us alright.

I will try to interpret in a way that does not involve destructive name-calling. There is a large group of people from the UK using this board. Your comments suggest that you don't really care how they feel. There is also the perception that using Spoiler Space isn't really very difficult, but the act of rejecting Spoiler Space really does damage the viewing experience for a large subgroup of the population of this board. Your position seems kind of self-centered; since the US makes the show, only the perception of US people matters. My position on this is that, while most other TV newsgroups do indeed discuss shows without spoiler space, it is the unusual makeup of this particular board's regular readership that makes an exception to regular rules helpful. It is the size of the UK contingent, and the remarkable, eloquent and entertaining contribution they have consistently made to our conversations, (Tennant won the Best Poster award last year) that makes me think we owe it to them to give them this level of consideration. They have really earned it over the years. If it were just one quiet guy from Suffolk, well, we would probably behave as they do over at alt.tv.frasier. Consider that perhaps we aren't so much handing them a gift of spoiler space as allowing them what they deserve. This newsgroup would be MUCH poorer without them.

Curious. This is the way this newsgroup has run for several years. Why, all of a sudden, is this such a big issue?

Please give me your numbers that show Americans are the majority of the viewers of this show. As I see it, this program is showed across half the world. Yes, America is a populous country, and yes the last episode had 31 million viewers (not typical - anyone confirm that?) but I would imagine on a typical viewing day that you total the other countries, and you would get just as many as Americans, right?

But yes, once the episode has aired in America and Canada, there should be no spoilers for Americans or Canadians. However, I would be very disappointed if I wanted to discuss something and found only Americans here because everyone else is keeping away to avoid ruining their surprise.

I enjoy the contributions of the Europeans of the group and of course my fellow antipodeans! It is why I enjoy this group so much!

wrote in message news:3bbfd6df.1724291@news...

Does it count that this show actually originates in the USA? The company that produces it is from the US, the original Network it aired on is from the US. Fair or not, other countries picked up Friends after it became a hit. I don't know the history of the group, but I'm willing to bet it was created before the show was shown in other parts of the world, which is why no .us is after it. That's where the problem comes in. Then again I could be wrong, this is just my guess. Anyway, it's now obviously an international group, but was it started off that way?

Probably because of their attitude. I am not trying to bash the Americans in this newsgroup, I am one, but some of you have to get your head out of our ass and wake up. The "minority" issue has already been addressed in other posts, so I'll skip that, but we're *oppressing* you? If you want to see oppression, go live as a woman in Afghanistan. Nobody is forcing you to use spoiler space, but they'll probably like you a lot more if you do. A similar situation would be if you were reading a really good book out in public somewhere, and you were about 3/4 of the way through your book, and suddenly a person walks by, sees what you're reading, and shouts out the book's surprise ending at you. You'd probably be a little pissed off, wouldn't you? But the person might try to justify it by saying that hey, why should he care? The book's been out for a while, and he's already read it.

If he had declined to shout out the ending to you, that would be something that we like to call "courtesy". It basically means taking other people into consideration, and it's something that a lot of us don't mind doing.

Well thats not fair....this isn't a public place. This is in a sence a private place...this would be more like going to club meeting. Now there maybe vistors (Anyone not in the USA), there but they come of there own free will...knowing that someone might spoil something for them. Everyone else isn't going to stop talking about it because 2 people in the group hasn't read the book. That would be silly...and so are spoilers.

Spoilers make sence when the topic is VAST! Like current movies...but not when the topic is nailed down and is make for the US watchs of the show.

As I have said before, I really don't think it comes from arrogance. A casual fan has no idea how many countries get Friends, perhaps some people never thought about it. Maybe it's time someone post a newsgroup FAQ so some people will actually know the rules. You can't get angry with someone if they didn't realize what they did was wrong in the first place. Also, people can get quite nasty when someone does make an accident. Just like you say Americans shouldn't be arrogant, everyone shouldn't be so nasty when accidents happen.

The surprise was a key factor, and I doubt that they'll be able to enjoy the episode as much as the people in the USA now that they've read your spoiler. Besides, I think you should consider the fact that Friends is a much bigger phenomenon in other countries than in the USA. In Europe, for example, you'll find several sections of Friends videos and DVDs at the store, while here in the USA you might be able to find the first two volumes of The Best of Friends if you're lucky.

I think I'm seeing some rebellion here. I strongly suspect this thread was added for the specific purpose of spoiling people, because several newcomers disagree with our unusual spoiler policy.

It IS an unusual spoiler policy. Most newsgroups for American-based shows consider an episode to be fair game once it has aired to the public. Alt.tv.frasier certainly works that way. One might even argue that in making aired episodes spoilers for several months, you dilute the concept of the spoiler for episodes which have not aired at all, but for which details have been released. I don't know if the folks around here realize that treating aired shows as spoiler material is a little different from what most newsgroups do. On the other hand, we seem to have a much larger international constituency than many other shows do. That would appear to be the reason for changing the rule.

I don't see any reason why we shouldn't continue to try to protect our large European constituency, but in educating new posters we probably need to understand that we are asking them to go to a little more trouble than they usually do, and acknowledge that this is different from what is done elsewhere. Explaining why - POLITELY- is a good idea. And for those of you who resent the idea that we put spoiler space for new episodes, just understand that nearly half of the people here are British. It's a special mix, requiring special consideration.

Peace, love, out.

Robertabrahammyalt.tv.friends

Understood, but I believe that everyone would agree that good Usenet etiquette is to watch the newsgroup for a little while before posting and then post similarly to everyone else. This allows continuity and for posting rules to be observed. If the newcomers do not like the rules they can go somewhere else. I agree to an extent that aired shows are no longer spoilers, but I was not the first one here nor am I going to complain about them. By putting spoiler space you are respecting other users and at the cost of what?...having to scroll a little? Think if the rolls were reversed and the show aired over there months before we could see it. I bet some of the posters that started this would not be happy.

This goes back to a great quote "When in Rome do as the Romans do". Since the newcomers are just that...newcomers, they should yield to the rules set by the existing users.

Be Courteous.

Just one point :- if everybody who counts already knows the spoiler information, why did the post have to be made? It did not offer an opinion or any other value other than the spoiler itself. This is the reason why the post was truly inconsiderate, because any considerate person would have realised that the only people who could possibly get anything out of the post are those who had not gotten the opportunity to see the show yet.

Yes but from what I gather, Frasier isn't as big as Friends is in UK. Friends has a wider audience worldwide. You have people from all over the globe on this board. Place where people haven't seen season 7 at all. So the 'special' spoiler policy is justified.

There is one hell of a lot of "practise what you preach" rhetoric going on here, and I cannot believe what I am about to say but I actually agreed with Saddam Hussein (I guarantee it's a once-in a lifetime event) when he said "The US should use wisdom and not force". The Taliban wanted proof before they handed Bin Laden over - but of course "the evidence is confidential", which basically amounts to Nato and all that lot saying "We're above the law, hand him over because we say so". As much as I abhor the Taliban, if the US had just shown them the evidence they wanted in the first place we wouldn't be where we are now. And the pathetic thing is that all the strikes are going to do is reaffirm the opinion in the Afghans who don't dare to think any different because of the Taliban that the US is a dictatorial state that deserved what it got. If this is the case, your source of information differs from mine. We have been told that the US air force concentrated on taking out the Afgani air defense. They were military targets. The Taliban say we hit civilians, but the Taliban can't seem to decide whether or not they know where Bin Laden is, either, so I don't trust them just on their say-so. Did British news confirm our hitting civilians?

OK. What action do you suggest we take? What exactly does this mean?

Once again, if my information is inaccurate, please bring me up to date. I have been told that US presented their evidence to the President of Pakistan - and he agreed that we had proof. We presented the evidence to "NATO and all that lot" and THEY agreed that we had proof. So did the United Nations. Among the proof given - a confession by one of Bin Laden's lieutenants. After we attacked Afganistan yesterday, Bin Laden made a statement in which he pretty much admitted he was involved in the WTC attack. I think it's pretty clear he did it.

As much as I abhor the Taliban, if the US had just shown

Tina, I think we may have a legitimate debate as to whether or not these strikes were the right way to go, but I do not think, for a minute, that there's any chance at all the Taliban would ever have accepted any evidence we presented. If we had a taped confession by the man himself they would have accused us of either trickery or coersion. There's a very, very deep and profound sense of Muslim community which is strongly at play here, one which we have ignored at our peril for years. They think they are banding together in the name of God against the Infidel. The depth of their conviction, even misguided, must not be ignored.

And the pathetic thing is that all the strikes are going

This is true.

Which more than likely means more

More strikes there, more terrorism here, and, I am deeply sorry to say, in the UK, too. I am a much sadder and more worried person today than I was a month ago.

We got there from here because the focus became American ethnocentricism.

The news has presented views from people - I think a major figure in the British Muslim community was one of them - which basically said that they were very concerned about the fact that their information pointed to areas with potentially high civillian populations being targeted, yes. This came from the British Muslim council just now, as it happens: "These day and night strikes -- which are already leading to innocent civilian deaths amongst the long-suffering Afghan population -- will not achieve this purpose [of justice]." And the fact that four UN workers have been killed by a "stray" missile isn't going to help that one little bit.

Well, for starters, I'm unsure as to whether there would be quite as much vigilance being taken to avoid civillian targets if it hadn't been brought to the countries' respective Governments basically by the Muslim communities and those members of the public who were looking beyond the TV media for answers.

Yes, I agree there, but did they ever actually show the Taliban that proof? I have no doubt that they would never for a second actually conceed if presented with undeniable proof, but as far as I'm aware, they never actually presented any information anyway. There are people here - trust me, I've seen them protesting in front of high-profile buildings in Cambridge today, and there's a march in London being organised for Saturday - who consider the coalition to be acting almost in the manner they are supposed to be condemning, because they basically never directly showed the Taliban the proof they wanted to see. If we had ever actually shown that proof and they *still* didn't hand him over - *then* I'd be more for it, so long as it was made absolutely certain that civillians were going to be kept well out of it. As it is, because I've not actually heard *anything* to say that we even actually attempted to show the Taliban the proof they demanded, I can't help thinking that we didn't exactly do all we could to avoid the strikes.

But then again, I just started at uni - I'm getting political mayhem thrown at me from all directions, what do I know. ;) (I have no doubt that when I go in tomorrow, there will be people with petitions and advertising Saturday's march *everywhere*.)

Oh, I agree there. Did you hear about the possible Taliban defectors, though? I think (hope) that to an extent, that means people who until now have gone along with the Taliban have realised that the fundamentalism practised is not what Islam is about. Either that or they finally plucked up the courage to leave.

And, unfortunately, probably not just restricted to the UK and US. If the current anthrax rumours I've heard - that it may have been distributed through the post - are true, then it could very easily be transported to any country that has backed the US. The threat of biological/germ warfare worries me almost more than the threat of physical retaliation, for reasons I'm not even sure of - that said, I'm supposed to be going to the film festival in London next month, and I'm not looking forward to it one bit. Even the fact that the Met Police (of which a family friend is a member) have had virtually all their leave cancelled doesn't reassure me right now.

Yep. You were clear as a bell the first time. I said, "It is the world's misfortune that what you said is a wise statement." I was the one who was unclear. It is horribly unfortunate for a lot of people all over the world, but what you said is quite true.

It is unfortunate for the beseiged government of Pakistan. (Boy, I feel sorry for their poor President. He's stuck in the middle and it ain't his fault.) It is unfortunate for people of every nation who lost loved ones in the attacks. It is unfortunate for a lot of very oppressed people in Afganistan, whose terrible lives just got even worse.

Bin Laden has indeed pointed out one of our national sins; what he does not understand that his answer makes our mistakes look like tiddlywinks in terms of moral outrage.
