OK, that said....your point is stupid. I seriously doubt anyone is living vicariously through any of these actors lives. If you don't like the program, there is a simple solution -- don't watch it!!! ~~~ Kathy

Actually I do watch the show but is has lost a lot of it's edge and originality as it once had. Living in NYC for the past 12 years, there is so much things that go on in the show that are so far fromt he truth. Not sure where you live, so if not NYC then you may not understand what I am referring to.

I grew up in the burbs outside of NYC but live in Washington now. You are 100% on the mark about the inaccuracy of the depiction of life in Manhattan. I know a big part of the problem is that the show is filmed mostly on sets and occasionally uses the back lot but it is so ridiculously far off the mark in it's depiction that I really have to wonder if the writers have ever been to Manhattan. Courteney Cox should know better because she actually did live in Manhattan for a while.

It took them something like 9 years to have their first black person on the show. Do they think there are no black people in Manhattan? How come nobody has a New York accent? Monica, Ross and Rachel are all from Long Island and they don't talk like anybody I've ever met from Lawn-Guyland. The size of the apartments they live in are ridiculously large. There aren't enough pedestrians on the street. There isn't enough noise or traffic. Central Perk should have sliding gates in front of their doors and windows. The people are just way too laid back too. Everything's too clean. There's no evidence of crime at all. Where does Monica park her Porsche? On the street? Those kind of parking spots are hard to come by. She'd more likely be paying exorbitant fees to a parking garage at least a dozen blocks from her apartment.

Other than the stock footage shots of Manhattan there's been very little that has smelled like the real city to me. Have we ever even seen a pretzel vendor selling those big pretzels that are rocked hard that they keep warm over a small charcoal fire and charge way too much for? Man I miss those!

Nothing pisses me off more than racial bull$#%+. This stupid topic has come up repeatedly and someone actually did a study on it...I believe it was even posted here a while back. There was a count of the number of blacks on the show because so many bitched...the actual number in Greenwich Village versus what is depicted on the show is incorrect but in the other direction. There are to many blacks that show up on the show (statistically speaking). I'm sorry but this isn't In living color, Sanford and son, cosby show, etc. which btw were more incorrect than Friends. Now maybe the argument is there isn't 0.32% or so that have main roles..that may even be up for discussing after Charlie, but regardless...it is common to see each race hang around their own race for the majority. Personally this isn't the case for me, but from observation of groups of people it is true. Therefore, if you sample the background in Friends and check, they are probably putting to many black extras in the show. Then if you analyze the main cast and the people they interact with compared to 1) the percentage of people they have to interact with and then 2) the fact that people converse with their own race (generally), it's not far off.

It's a double-standard that says a "black show" does not have to have white actors, but not the other way around.

Everything has to be PC to satisfy just about every kind of ethnic group you can think of.

Technically, there were white characters on "A Different World".

Marisa Tomei was on the first season.

And also if we want to get picky, Cree Summer is as white as she is black. Years ago, I was twice in the same place as her father Don Francks, and both times he said something to me, the second time something about how we are all family. Since he's white, that in effect my "sister" Cree can claim to be white as much as people take her for black. With a different mix of chromosomes, we might take her for white, until it is pointed out that her mother is black.
