I still enjoy watching the show and there have been some funny moments but for the most part I think this season has been pretty weak. When a sitcom throws in some serious things for one episode I can deal with it but dragging stuff out for weeks just ruins a comedy. It was a nice run but I think the show has run its course and its time for it to end.
Got to disagree with you, Steve-o. In my opinion, every time it seems like this series has lost its way, the writers throw in a twist that completely revitalizes and reenergizes the show. When Ross and Rachel first hooked up, it looked like the show was done for, until Chandler and Monica heated it right back up. Now that Chandler and Monica's marriage has become somewhat stale and routine, Joey's new crush on Rachel has gotten fans excited and talking again. You can blast the show all you want, but it kicked the crap out of "Survivor" this year, and you can bet that it will be back for a ninth and final season.
We all have opinions and thats what maked newsgroups fun but I just think this whole Joey-Rachel thing has ruined the Joey character and makes things uncomfortable which is not what I watch a sitcom for. Ross & Rachel always worked because it was never too serious. I am one who watched the first 2 seasons of Survivor along with friends and I dont think the reason Survivor slid in the ratings was because friends was so great this season I think it has much more to do with September 11th and people losing their interest in the whole Survivor format. I never thought about watching Survivor this season because I just had no interest in it anymore. Like I said the show has had a great run but another season could get ugly.

Erm what? Were you posting here when that happened? Ross and Rachel lasted nearly three seasons and provided the main storylines and cliffhangers! How could the show have looked "done for" after a season and a half?!!
Now that Chandler and Monica's
Well what do you expect?
I'll agree with you on that one, even though it is an entirely unrealistic storyline.
Hooking up Ross and Rachel destroyed much of the romantic tension that had made the show such a breakout success in season one. Just because the show wasn't cancelled in that period doesn't mean the Ross and Rachel relationship was good for it. "Moonlighting" rambled on for a few seasons after the writers killed the tension between David and Maddie, but nobody would seriously argue that the show was better after they got together than it had been before. In my opinion, the appeal of the Ross/Rachel relationship to most viewers was the fact that Rachel was so far out of Ross' league that we couldn't help but root for the underdog. Along the same lines, the Niles/Daphne pairing has practically destroyed "Frasier."
Good writing. They're paid well, after all.
After you live with Jennifer Aniston for a year, then you come and talk about how unrealistic it is to fall head over heels for her. I don't think it's unrealistic at all. Joey's a man, he sees Ross and Rachel as friends who become lovers, he sees Chandler and Monica as friends who become lovers, and he is getting older and realizes that he wants the same thing.
What makes this storyline so wonderful to me is that if you think about it, this development has been foreshadowed for years. Remember Joey's dream about having a relationship with Monica? He wanted that closeness that Chandler and Monica had. His first inclination was to try to hit on Rachel. In the episode where Rachel turns 30, Joey laments how old he's getting, suggesting that he feels he needs to abandon his youthful transgressions and settle down with someone stable. When Joey finds out Rachel is pregnant, he sincerely offers to marry her. This Joey/Rachel thing did not come out of the blue. It has been teased and hinted at for several years.
Too bad, because I could use the money. You sound just like a St. Louis Rams fan on February 2.
Many shows have a romantic tension between main characters (X-Files, Frasier, Superman L&C, etc.pp.) and most often the show gets boring when they're hooked up together, while ironically the actual coupling usually takes place in later seasons (5+) to put new pep into the series. In Friends the romantic between R&R, in opposite to C&M and J&R, wasn't written in later, but was one main story arc from throughout the beginning. And it's keeping people like me, i.e. R&R fans -- believers in true love, watching.
Every geek, nerd, jerk, whatever pictures himself into Ross. Losers are sympathic identification characters. The author's fault was making him too nerd at times.
N&D just got together in the episodes I'm able to watch on TV, right now it's quite cute.
Well, although you didn't mean me, as she's more than 10 years older than me, I think I could stand her.
What you're describing has nothing to do with love. 'Love' is what R&R have, 'loving' what C&M have -- what Joey feels is described best as 'caring' IMHO: He has turned 30 lately, sees a happy couple every day, grew up caring about his sisters, lives with a pregnant single woman => what did you expect?
You wish.
So does Ross ;-). Joey's protective, what else did you expect from a character who grew up with 7 (?) younger (?) sisters.
Ask an author. I'm pretty sure, they didn't plan anything more than friendship happening between J&R before writings for season 8 begun. On the other hand I think -- and say it way too often -- that it has always been planned to have R&R end up together.
I don't believe that Ross and Rachel are exactly a great advertisement for true love. I think that from the way the show has progressed so far, they love each other as friends and will always wish things could be the way they were when they first hooked up, but both realize that they can't and won't be that way ever again. At this point, there would have to be some phenomenal plot twists for me to look at a Ross/Rachel reunion as a fitting end to the show. Maybe three years ago I would have said they truly BELONG together, but right now I think Rachel and Joey make more sense than Rachel and Ross.
I disagree... I think the author's fault was in allowing the loser to get his dream girl too early. A single season of pining was too insignificant an obstacle for me to feel a lasting sense of triumph. While TOW Prom Video was certainly a classic episode, there was nowhere for the relationship to go from there but down. And down it went.
Just wait. Right now I consider "Frasier" unwatchable.
'Caring' and 'loving'... not quite sure there's a distinction there. Joey's love for Rachel bloomed the same way Chandler and Monica's did for each other. How are his feelings less legitimate?
Constantly.
I think the five-year plan definitely saw Ross and Rachel wind up together. Not sure the nine-year plan sees the same finish. Much has changed in these characters' lives over the course of the show, and the goals that existed at the beginning probably are no longer the same. I would consider a Ross/Rachel reunion in the series finale a longshot...
Well, they're frustrated about how strange their relationship is going, thus they don't yet have the courage to try making it real again, but there're still 34 (or 35?) episodes left. In my eyes the bilateral wish alone for it being the way it was again is an indication of love. You and me seem to mainly differ in our judgments of how R&R see the chances for a common future.
Like others see omens for J&R in retroperspective, I constantly see romantic tensions between R&R. Latest example: The way Ross looked at Rachel when Joey suggested them moving in together. If you want, I could point out many more.
I still don't see it. There's not been any sign that Rachel had any feelings more than friendship or hormone driven lust for Joey. Maybe the writers did it this way to be able to flexibly react on the audience's wishes, we just don't know. I'd like to know how many episodes are written / taped ahead. I'm sure there are milestones that are set before writings for a season start and not touched afterwards, but there are also story arcs that have not been fixed.
That's the other one. Is the reunite taking long enough for you?
English is not my native tongue, I tried to describe it the best I can.
They're monodirectional.
If there's so much changed, why do I still see it? Is it because I didn't watch all episodes in couple of years but days? Or maybe they're trying too hard to make me think there was nothing left between R&R.
Okay, you didn't ask, but I'd like to throw some in: * The Porsche ride. (Btw.: Why can't English speakers pronounce 'Porsche' the right way?) Actually I thought, before the whole red sweater stuff, the baby was received that night. * The end of TOW Rachel's date (Coffee & Mona). * Parts of the sonogram stuff. * Ross telling it's a girl. * Ross learning Dutch (kinda) and doing everything to get the appartment. * Few moments with Rachel's dad.
I thought there was something at C&M's wedding, but I can only remember Mona, girls on Ross' feet and Rachel's face. Can you believe that episode is going to be aired the first time in Germany in more than 10 weeks? They just started the premiere showing of the 6th season today -- weekday's at 18:00.

How's that? As I see plenty of potential for Ross' character. He shouldn't back off and let Joey have the spoils. Imagine Rachel hooking up with Joey - consider it incest? But more to the point an intelligent, self-motivated woman like Rachel can't bounce an idea of that dumbbell Joey without it landing on the floor with a thud. What a miserable life that'll be. The highlight of her relationship with Joey will be reduced to trading come on lines.

What I meant was that there would have to be a phenomenal plot twist in
the relationship for me to consider their reunion a good note for the show
to end on. Chandler and Monica's hook-up was a plot twist because not
everyone saw it coming. If Ross and Rachel were to get back together it
couldn't even be considered a twist. (It could barely be considered a
plot.)
If I were writing the show, the only way I would consider putting Ross
and Rachel back together is to reveal that their divorce never went through
due to some technicality, and they have been (unknowingly) man and wife for
the last two years. At first, Rachel would be upset, but then she'd realize
how right it felt. The added bonus of that is that her daughter isn't born
out of wedlock, and her father no longer wants to disown her.

You think I'm a pessimist? Read some of my fanfic.
Seriously... how is it pessimistic to suggest that Ross back off? He
had years to get back with Rachel and all he could do in that time was a)
feel sorry for himself, b) let petty concerns get in the way of their
relationship and c) keep reminding her "We were on a break!" The window of
opportunity for a rekindled romance between these two has been shut. This
on-again-off-again business isn't charming anymore. It's monotonous.

News ratings go up every time there's a tragedy. That doesn't mean the tragedy makes us happy.
I'd really like to see the both of us being in charge of the show's progress, that would give some nice fights.
I thought about this until about the last quarter of the 6th season, now it would just look made up. Writing ain't that easy though, in particular when you don't know the intentions behind important plot lines, like Joey's crush.
Why would *only* she be upset? Sure, Ross might like it just because the fact he's only divorced twice, but for what we know, their emotions for each other are at about the same level.
If we'd like to drop the show even closer to soap niveau, there'd to be a dramatic incident, me suggesting Ben's death -- again. This would be the easy way: Rachel consoling Ross. Seriously. As nobody knows Rachel's feelings nowadays[1], it would be easy to write her doing the first step towards a reunion with Ross. When Joey tells her, and the same goes for Ross (see my post "Forecasting 816"), she's forced to think about her emotional life, this could result in rediscovering feelings for Ross, which she strictly forbid herself until now.
[1] In this context the only time I remember her feelings being indicating is at the ending of TOW Rachel's Date. Except this scene she's telling there're no feelings, like Ross does. We've not seen a scene of either one seriously thinking about their future relationship in season 8.
Scenes I suggest: * Rachel playing with Ross' dinosaurs on her bulge. Ross comes in... They play together. * Rachel thinks the baby's coming, they go to the hospital, somehow nobody else is available. But it's false alarm and they leave at the time Ross should get to his class. As she's nothing else to do, Rachel's joining his class. * April 1st. Is it common in the US to fool each other that day, too? If so, do it with everyone all episode, ending with a very cute one -- I've to think about what it might be like. (Be aware of too much similarities with "716 TOW the Truth About London"?) * Ross makes a stupid comment about how easy it was having a big tummy etc., which upsets Rachel. Ross wears a fake bulge. Well, I think I borrowed that one from somewhere, just can't remember exactly. * Rachel helps Ross with a crossword puzzle. Optionally: They win a trip for two with it. * Rachel finds Ross' secret yet unfinished novel (idea: wants to play computer game, finds file instead) and really likes it. It contains some autobiographic, revealing stuff. * Plus we see them doing antenatal exercises together and * later on Ross delivering the baby in a cab or something. [You're welcome to add ideas.]
IMHO Rachel owes Ross some sweet moves, not vice versa, even though he's been such an idiot at times.
Now would that be enough to make you consider a R3 (Ross & Rachel Reunion) fit in?
If there'll ever be a marriage -- even I don't see it coming soon -- I strongly wish *her* making the proposal.

True, up until then they were a nice couple though.
Yes but there's a difference between the news and a sitcom!
I think it's spectacular for "Friends," in the same way the Chandler/Monica relationship gave the show a critical shot in the arm in Year Four. Once again, now we have that romantic tension and an underdog to root for. And no disrespect to Schwimmer, but I think that LeBlanc has matured as an actor over the past few seasons to the point where he is more suited to play the role than Schwimmer ever was. As an aside, I think Schwimmer's double-duty as the show's director has really hindered his growth as an actor, and it seems to me that since he started his official role behind the camera the Ross character has devolved from a likable schlub into an obnoxious caricature. Yet one more reason I don't think Ross and Rachel will end up together... his character is no longer deserving of our empathy.
Well, I agree with you 100%, but the "friends as lovers" writing is not necessarily uncreative. If uncreative is even a word.
I guess two different people can see the same storyline two completely different ways. I always felt that Joey's first inclination was to hit on Rachel because deep down, although he could never openly admit it because of her history with Ross, he had been harboring feelings for Rachel for some time.
I think the hints started in the episode I mentioned before, when Joey found himself longing for a C&M-type relationship and made a pass at Rachel.
"Dan Silverstein" wrote in message news:[email]...
Oh come on! Its easy for you to start this stuff now that there has been a J&R pairing inflence. Why hasn't anybody mentioned their suspicions of Joey harboring feelings?? well...because we didn't suspect it until this whole J&R thing started and then we started checking out the past to find and make up evidence based on scenes that weren't supposed to be depicted that way. For god sakes, Joey was being Joey when he hit on Rachel.
Hey, I'm not saying I predicted it. All I'm saying is that with the benefit of 20/20 hindsight, when I look back at the last few years, I can definitely see it. I think the storyline would have been less enjoyable to me if I had predicted it in advance. Now that it has happened, it is infinitely more enjoyable because I can look back at the past few seasons and see that, yeah, OK, it *fits*. Personally, I always felt a bit cheated by the Chandler/Monica storyline because it never came as a surprise to me; whereas the majority of people who saw Monica's head pop out from under those covers in the London episode were legitimately surprised and pleased by the development. That's how I felt when the Joey/Rachel thing started. Sure, the promos pumped it up, but I expected the writers to back out at the end or pull a bait and switch to get ratings.
This entire season?? well yeah, but this season doesn't count because they started it this season you goof. Dan started talking and speculating that there was hints of this J&R pairing before season 8.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying I predicted it or saw it coming. Hell, anyone who predicted it in the first few weeks of this season deserves tremendous props. All I'm saying is that looking back, knowing what I know now... yeah, I can definitely see where the seeds were planted.
So do I. Episode 807 TOW the Stain where they both realize they loved living together. Btw: What made me wonder was that they only thought about a baby in a crip not a kid, who needs a room on her own. You don't wanna say the fire at Phoebe's or stuff like the boat and the Soapy award were intended by the writers to prepare coupling R&J, don't you? And not again that New Year's kiss.
Wow, you truly are an idiot. My first post here was back in September, (as I recall that was BEFORE the season started!), and it was asking the question what people thought about a Joey/Rachel relationship.
As I recall, the first response I got was from abrahammy, who politely told me that she knew enough about what happens in the first few episodes of the season to tell me that there was never going to be such a relationship.
Not that I would call the current H&R situation a relationship but was it something you saw before season 8 started or was a J&R pairing a shot in the dark? They have or are trying out every possible combination, M&C, R&R, J&R. At this rate there will be a J&P combo next season.
Well, they covered that base, sort of, in the first season when Joey started dating Ursula. But with three guys and three girls, there are nine possible romantic couples, and the writers have pretty much covered all their bases. Obviously, M&R are out. Barring the obvious (M&C, R&R, J&R, J&P), the writers have also planted hints for all but one of the other possible pairings:
C&R: The writers established that Rachel dreamed about having one last fling with Chandler before her wedding with Barry.
M&J: The writers established that Monica had a crush on Joey when they first moved in, and that she originally wanted to hook up with him in London instead of Chandler. Also, the writers established that Joey had a dream about a relationship with Monica.
R&P: The writers established that these two almost did it right after Ross found out Carol was a lesbian.
The only base the writers haven't really covered is Chandler and Phoebe. You could argue that she came on to him in TOW Everyone Finds Out, but clearly that was in jest. Other than that couple, the writers could say that they laid a foundation for any relationship that pans out in the final season...
Phoebe: This is nice. We never do anything just the two of us. Chandler: It's great. Maybe tomorrow we can rent a car and run over some puppies. Phoebe: Eww, I don't wanna do that.
[email] (Dan Silverstein) wrote in message news:...
Oh yeah right! I can just picture a pregnant Rachel swept off her feet by a lame come on line "how ya doin'?". Anyway, there isn't even any tension yet let alone a J&R roamance. Joey's dealing with a crush that Rachel at present is completely unaware of.
I think you are confusing the character Ross from the actor Schwimmer. All this tells me is David is a versatile performer able to work in front and behind the camera. It isn't "double-duty" as no one hold a gun to your head and asks you to direct.
Yes Ross has not been a likable character in some quarters but I would hope that the producers\writers would help redeem Ross as he's going to be the father of a baby girl soon and end up with Rachel.
It was completely isolated incident btw. And the only hints of a J&R relationship started this season. I think Joey as he said himself in that episode wanted to do it with a friend as it would take too long to build a friendship with a woman and do it with her. A sort of shake n bake relationship.
Sorry bud! I'm a gambling person myself. I did not place a bet with you on this one earlier. But I tell you what I'll bet on Rachel ending up with Ross and not Joey in the end. How abt it?
Why not? She was previously swept off her feet by a boring
paleontologist and an unfaithful dentist. Rachel's standards are a bit
lower than her looks would suggest.
And even though it is "just a crush," there is plenty of tension between
Rachel and Joey. Just look at TOW All The Poker and TOW The Blackout.
Unrequited love is actually better for romantic tension than a healthy
relationship.
I didn't intend the phrase "double-duty" to mean that he was drafted into the service. I realize he volunteered for the position, all I'm saying is that his performance as an actor seems to have suffered as a consequence.
If he is in fact going to end up with Rachel, he's going to need to become alot more likeable in the remaining eps of this season and throughout the course of next season. I just cannot bring myself to root for a Ross/Rachel reunion with the way his character is currently being portrayed. Several times, in fact, I've actually rooted for him to get hit by a bus. (Kidding.)
The foundation of Chandler and Monica's relationship was predicated on a handful of isolated incidents (I'm intentionally neglecting to mention the horrible, continuity-destroying after-the-fact flashback in TOW All the Thanksgivings). And yet, after the two had hooked up, millions of fans agreed that the seeds had planted far enough in advance to make the entire thing plausible. I look at Joey and Rachel the same way, even though the seeds weren't planted as far back as the first season.

I wish she wouldn't stoop so low as to be swept off her feet by Joey. I also felt Rachel had class and why I believe R&J will not work.
Sorry but I just can't picture a romantic tension between Joey and Rachel. I like the current Joey with his come on lines and sexual innuendoes. Pairing him off with Rachel might well mean his character might end up being whipped like Chandler.
It all depends on how the character is written up in a script. David's performance as an actor is as good if not better than the rest of the cast members. If you have doubts about his acting ability catch HBO's Band of Brothers where David plays the Jewish CO, Sobel. I though he was brilliant.
Should not be difficult to accomplish, IMO. Ross was very likeable in 803 and TV guide actually quoted RnR as the greates couple on TV. A couple of brilliant episodes with Ross and he'll be forgiven for past mistakes. As I said David's a very good performer.
Well, his character's going to get paired off sooner or later. The only one of the six who has even a chance at ending the series single is Phoebe. And it is sad how whipped Chandler is these days, isn't it?

Why is he so out of her league?? Because she was more popular in high school? Because she's prettier than him?
I think Ross is out of Rachel's league. He's always been sweet(he still is now...Mental gellar was just a abnormal phase that the writers made a mistake of putting in). Rachel was a snob until she met Ross. And he changed her i would think into a more caring woman. Although he couldn't change her "fully" because the first thing that comes to mind is TOW Nobody's Ready...and Rachel acts very bitchy by deciding not to go because Ross yelled at her because she was taking a long time.
BTW "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder." I think Ross is very handsome and a great man.
Delurking here because Sofya makes such a good point.
I like Rachel, but otherwise I pretty much agree with you, Sofya ... although if you think about everything Ross has been through emotionally, it's actually surprising that's he's not MORE "mental." If "Friends" were a drama instead of a comedy, he probably would have gone postal by now.
And, yes, David Schwimmer is a handsome man, so I don't see that the Ross/Rachel pairing is somehow inconsistent in a physical sense. To the extent that David is right about Ross being an underdog, it's because of the way he and Rachel were in high school. (And you're right, David, that that was indeed a powerful theme in the earliest eps.) As an adult, he more than holds his own.
That's an interesting point of view. A completely *female* point of view, mind you, but certainly interesting. :)
He's always been sweet(he still is
I tend to think it was Schwimmer's idea to transform the Ross character into the "Kramer" of the series. Tellingly, it wasn't until "Seinfeld" said goodbye that David Schwimmer started emulating Michael Richards.
Rachel was a snob until she met Ross. And he
Excuse me? Wasn't it Rachel who took control over her own life and decided not to marry the wealthy dentist because she truly didn't love him? Rachel's character definitely changed between high school and the pilot, but I don't think it was her relationship with Ross that changed her. Not for the better, anyway. Their relationship was good for a while but ultimately led them both to become snippy and spiteful.

I have a question.
How was he a loser before he got with Rachel? Just because she's "hot"? Before he met her he had gotten a Ph.D., a steady job, a divorce from a wife who "dropped a bombshell" on his life by announcing she was a lesbian and then proceeded to try to push her gal pal into his role with Ben. This was not his fault. A "loser" in my mind wouldn't show his responsibility in finishing school, getting a good job, staying faithful in his marriage, being a good father, and anything else that matters. He also has managed to be on very friendly terms with his ex-wife for his child's sake even though he would be justified in feeling bitter. Being a "nerd" may classify a person as a loser in high school but they're not in high school any more.
He's a complete dweeb! He's a paleontologist. He still plays with dinosaurs. By his own admission, he likes to come home, listen to Kenny G, and take a nice, hot bubble bath. For every moment you consider Ross to be a loser I can find 20 moments that Joey is no better. Just because he has his ways with the ladies (not that nice most of the times), doesn't make him better than Ross. Does Joey know anything about life apart from women? Ross matured earlier than any one of the six and has been through a lot. It took Joey more than 7 seasons to show that he has matured and he still lacks the basics in many aspects of life. Ross a loser? Sorry, I don't buy it, especially when you compare him to Joey...
And this is one of the things I hate about this show (though I'm sure it is not unique in this regard).
A guy like Ross is written off as a loser on the basis of the above highly questionable criteria. I'm not blaming you, you are just doing what the show does. A couple of the characteristics listed above actually are annoying, and in my book the fact that he even HAS a freebie list is disturbing (laminating it bothers me not one single bit). Ross is not a loser. He is smart, sensitive, handsome, caring but just not good as Joey with the ladies, althuogh i think he might be better than Joey in the fact that he can be committed and carry on a serious relationship unlike Joey. I see, you think players like Joey are not losers?

How
But the Ross Rachel relationship was one of the factors that made the show so famous! Secondly, it's become apparent to me that S2 is the most popular amongst Friends fans. Also whether they were "on a break" still one of the main talking points in ATF and amongst Friends fans, years after it happened.
I'm sick of all the C&M stories this season...
unrealistic
Yes, but just because Rachel is there, and he's changed emotionally. The only way that Joey's crush would be made realistic was if there had been some previous, loving foreshadowing. Whereas all we've had in the past from Joey towards Rachel has been physical.
I can't understand how they got *all* of them to sign up...
