Friends S7-22 - Viva Las Amigas

Before this season began, cynics predicted how predictable it would be.

Guess what.

722 "TOW Chandler's Dad"

When Ross asks to borrow the Porsche for a spin, Rachel is incensed to discover than Monica lets him drive it, because he's her brother - and as long as he replaces the lights when he breaks them! But after she learns she's not allowed to drive it because she's a terrible driver, while Joey & Phoebe use it all the while, Rachel is so incensed she steals the keys from Ross - plus $20 which she regards as alimony!

Just as she's driving away, Ross stops her by flinging himself across the bonnet, but since she won't hand over the keys, he climbs into the back of the car, afraid to ride in the death seat!

By the time Rachel is barrelling along the highway, Ross has strapped himself into the front - when she lets it drop that her licence has lapsed, then to make matters worse she closes her eyes & takes her hands off the steering wheel!

But when they're pulled over by a traffic cop, Rachel desperately tries to switch places with Ross until he warns that they'll get arrested for a layby blow job, so when Officer Hanson asks for her licence she calls him Officer Handsome.

Of course, the guy isn't fooled for a moment, especially since Ross is determined to betray her, but Rachel's flirting saves her, and she's let off with a promise to renew her licence, if Ross takes the wheel.

However, Ross drives home in third gear, so they're soon pulled over by another cop, Officer Petty, but squirmingly Ross tries to emulate Rachel by calling him Officer Pretty, and while the cop writes out a ticket for driving too slowly, a disgusted Rachel has to remind her ex-husband that he has a son...

Phoebe has been going out with Jake for a month now, so Joey makes the effort to get to know him. But when Jake leans forward in his seat, Joey is surprised to notice that he has a pink lace secret!

Since Phoebe never minds Joey checking her out when she leans forward, she reveals that Jake is wearing her underwear as a dare, in fact she's wearing his briefs right now - and the little flap is great for holding her lipstick! She explains silk feels great against the skin - and she challenges Joey's masculinity for not being prepared to try it himself.

After a bath, Joey spots the laundry basket, picks up one of Rachel's tiny lavender thongs, thinks better of it, puts them back, and then goes to his bedroom with slightly larger low-cut red silk knickers!

Later, in Central Perk, Joey shows Phoebe his panties, so she informs him that he's a manly slut! He loves the feel of silk, all the choices of women's underwear, and the variety of fabrics - but when he enthuses about pantihose he has gone too far, and Phoebe advises him to stop.

Back in manly (or no) underwear, Joey feels the need to prove his masculinity by picking up an attractive woman in the coffee house, exploiting his position as a TV star, but when he tries to pay her bill, Rachel's panties come out with his wallet!

Chandler has not invited his father to the wedding because he hardly knows the man, and hasn't seen him for years, not since he started up a drag show in Vegas. Chandler assures Monica that if he did come he would turn up at the ceremony in a backless dress, but she promises she wouldn't care unless he turned up in a white dress & a veil - so Pheebs rushes out to buy a more suitable outfit for herself!

Monica packs their bags, telling Chandler they're going to Las Vegas, so he's relieved that they are eloping to escape the whole big wedding! However, she is determined to reconcile him with his father. Chandler explains how the man was always more than embarrassing, always turning up at school as a different Hollywood starlet, or cheering on his son at a swim meet dressed as Carmen Miranda, wearing a headdress of real fruit which he later handed out to Chandler's friends!

But Monica points out that he's not 14 any more, and anyway his dad did at least turn up. If he is not at the wedding then Chandler will regret it for the rest of his life, so Chandler gives in just for her, and they set off for Las Vegas...

Arriving at the all-male burlesque, Chandler nervously tries to act butch, but of course the glammed-up waitress is a gay man who sees that he's straight. Chandler admits to Monica that over the last few years his dad has constantly tried to contact him, but he wouldn't meet the guy, not even when he came to New York.

At last the show begins. Onto the stage sashays the star attraction, the incomparable Helena Handbasket, whom Chandler quietly identifies to Monica as his daddy! Helena looks remarkably like a real woman, so that while he sings "I Feel Pretty (oh so pretty and)" GAY shouts the audience, Monica cannot believe that this attractive mature woman is actually her prospective father-in-law.

Then to Chandler's horror, Helena comes down into the audience, and when Chandler tries to leave, Helena halts him. In a heart-stopping moment, Chandler turns around, and Helena takes a deep breath upon seeing his son's face, but he is very careful not to embarrass the boy, and instead admires Monica's diamond ring.

When Chandler meekly reveals that he & Monica are engaged, Helena struggles for control, then congratulates them both, even though he realises how badly he has been snubbed, and he gives the couple his blessing. At last, Chandler invites his father to the wedding, and the guy accepts like a real lady. He returns to the stage to break into "It's Raining Men" accompanied by 4 half-naked male dancers - and Chandler whispers to his beloved that when he was growing up, he used to be the one on the far left!

This was a splendid episode. Not the most hilarious of the season (since the standard has been so high) but still very very funny. However fans who dislike gay hinting will probably hate it, since all three stories had that queer bent.

Rachel was as good as ever in a great story, but unfortunately Ross reverted to Mental Geller, just as I'd become used to seeing his old self again, and I ended up throwing socks at the screen. But at least the Joey & Phoebe story delightfully skated along right on the edge between good & bad taste.

According to the spoilers, Matthew Perry filmed his contribution at a later date, after leaving rehab, and it was a great relief to see how much better he looked, especially with the vast improvement in his performance & comic timing. One again he was the Chandler that I so admire, deriving humour for his character out of the situation, rather than spouting irrelevant one-liners as he used to do.

Although I was surprised to find that Chandler's dad was played by Kathleen Turner, sadly I was not surprised that I was surprised. But as an introduction she did a fabulous job as an unusual but caring parent, who tried so hard not to embarrass his only son, and I'm so looking forward to seeing more of her in the finale.

But in the meanwhile we must be content with a heart-warming yet poignant story that explored one complexity of human relationships, beautifully acted by MP & CCA as well as Miss Turner, with ready laughs emerging unforced from a bittersweet drama.

In his transcript, Eric Aasen points out that Rachel puts the key into the ignition to the left of the steering wheel - a tradition left over from Porsche's racing history. The Le Mans 24 hours race used to start with the drivers running across the track to the car, then get in, buckle up, start the engine, and drive off. Porsche wanted to reduce the amount of time that took, and since all cars had the ignition switch to the right of the steering wheel, the drivers had to use their right hand to grab the seat-belt, put the car in gear & start it - while the left hand did nothing. Porsche moved the ignition to the other side so that the driver could use both hands, and since then every one of their cars has had the ignition switch on the left hand side of the steering wheel.

The cynics who predicted that we'd never hear of Joey's boat again later predicted that we'd never hear of Monica's car again. Will they ever learn?

Monica warning Ross to replace the brake lights means that he must have backed the Porsche into a wall or something. Since Joey and Phoebe both handle the car properly without trouble, does this shows that they're much better drivers than the professor?

Was the comb on the bathroom floor a practical joke?

After Rachel insists that she's not horsing around, does she then say that she's Porsching around or horsching around?

What the hell was Ross doing when the cop questioned Rachel?

He's not a very good friend to her, is he?

In Britain you only have no licence if you've not passed the test (which is pretty bad), or if you've had it taken off you (which is even worse). But in America, is not having a driving licence just the minor offence of not paying a tax?

If Rachel seemed to put the boat out to charm the traffic cop, then don't forget that in 317 "TOWo the Ski Trip", Phoebe boasted that her nipples get her out of tickets. Anyway, it was good to see that American policemen are so friendly, unlike the stereotype - or are they never like that really?

If Officer Petty had joined the navy...

..would he be Chief Petty Officer Petty?

Since Phoebe has been going out with Jake for a month, and it was two weeks to the wedding, and Monica & Chandler wrote their vows at four weeks to go, that means that there was only a couple of weeks from 718 "TOW Joey's Award" to 721 "TOW the Vows". Time certainly does fly, doesn't it?

If Mr.Big tried on Rachel's knickers, would his things be more smashed down than Dragon's were?

Unlike Ross & Rachel, Phoebe is a good friend to Joey, very supportive, but shouldn't she at least question where he got those panties from?

Borrowing them from your girlfriend is fun, buying them for yourself is okay if a little weird, but isn't it wrong for him to steal them from Rachel?

Is pantihose what we call tights in Britain?

Is the roughness of male undergarment fabric the secret reason that Joey prefers to go commando?

Why didn't Joey use his "How you doin'" line on the girl?

Did you know that according to the spoilers, this was a new ending to the story, originally it ended Rachel & Phoebe catching Joey as he returned the stolen undies?

Did Phoebe really intend to wear a wedding dress at the wedding?

Or was it just for the dancing afterwards?

Monica warns Chandler that now they're getting married he won't win any more - so has she just been letting him get away with it for the last year?

And did she reveal this two weeks too early?

Chandler's description of Carmen Miranda was no exaggeration. She was a huge hit in musicals of the 1940s, and she is most famous for "The Lady with the Tutti-Frutti Hat", in which her headdress was about thirty feet high.

Did Jack Geller never bother to turn up when Monica was 14?

When Monica warned Chandler that if his father missed the wedding he would regret it for the rest of his life, was this a resonance with Jennifer Aniston not inviting her mother to her wedding?

Now we know why Chandler never contacted his father during the Vegas episodes a couple of years ago. In 412 "TOW the Embryos" we heard that Mr.Bing's show was called Viva Las Gaygas, but has it now changed to the 4 Queens bar?

The drag waitress was played by Alexis 'Lex' Arquette, the often transvestite sibling of David, and brother-in-law of Courteney. He has been in the show before, playing a coffee house customer in 613 "TOW Rachel's Sister".

This episode explained a great deal about Chandler's background, and at last we saw where he got his considerable charm from. In an unique blend of Mom & Dad, Helena came over as a good parent. Would you say that he was the best of all eleven?

Or do you prefer one of the other ten parents?

Kathleen Turner (with her husky voice) as an aging drag queen was a master-stroke of casting, wasn't she?

I've been a big fan of hers ever since she Romanced The Stone with Michael Douglas, and who could forget her sucking Steve Martin's finger in The Man With Two Brains?

And don't forget that she voiced Jessica Rabbit, one of the more unusual choices on Chandler's freebie list.

So I'm so looking forward to seeing what happens when Helena comes to the wedding, and is confronted by Nora!

Yet at the end of all this, we have still not been told his name!!

No spoilers PLEASE from anyone who's already seen the finale 723-4.

Yes, a slight bit of dramatic licence was going on here, for while the real audience (in Burbank or at home) enjoyed the scene, the audience at the club either couldn't hear what was going on, or would have been very puzzled - but then we weren't supposed to worry about them. And anyway I guess that they would be used to all sort of weird goings-on at the club and would put it down as part of the act. Maybe some of the nearer ones hoped that they were invited to the wedding too, and Chandler had to set them straight, just like those Craps players two years before.

Jake wore his girlfriend's undies - Joey did not. He stole some undies to enjoy the feel of silk around his genitals & between his buttocks.

I missed that misunderstanding bit. Actually, this is one thing I've always preferred about British comedies - the people in the background seem to be part of the scene, even when they're not. I've noticed in a lot of US sitcoms, they seem to be told "just sit there and don't move".

Yeah - for a while it seemed that Chandler was the butt of these jokes, but it seems that the writers decided to spread them out instead of not doing it, which is okay by me. I lolled at the nap partners.

Maybe I should make myself clear. When Rachel closed her eyes & took her hands off the steering wheel, I too would have reacted the same as Ross did. But I would not have done my best to get Rachel arrested while she was trying to charm the cop, and I never flirt with policemen!

I did like the way Ross flung himself across his sister's car though, and it was great to learn that there had been no sibling rivalry over the Porsche after their father had given it to her.

As for Ross being hysterically funny, I'm glad for you Jaime, okay? :)

Oh, I seeeeee!! I've just checked the transcript, and Monica says "just replace the bulbs IN the brake lights", but I heard it as "just replace the bulbs AND the brake lights". I guess I assumed that's how Americans refer to the lens covers. Thankyou Jaime, I got that wrong.

Well, I have a theory that you can only judge her when she's alone with him, she's nicer to him then. The same applies to her relationship with Ross, where she respects him far more in private. But when the others are around, she puts up this front. To a certain extent this applies to Rachel also, but Monica is not afraid to show her true feelings.

Awww... :) When he gave Phoebe her first bicycle, I rushed to the closet and fetched out my YFR flag, and was waving it just as madly when he put on that armadillo costume for his young son. And Ross has been so great in several episodes since, whether playing the bagpipes as best he could for his siter, or teaching Rachel a lesson with a dummy. But my little flag stayed furled when he added 60% to a student's grades, and it went back to the YFR closet when he tried to get Rachel arrested.

If she assumes he filed a report and he hasn't, then she has only done the right thing - especially since there is always a next time to be stopped. But if she assumes he did not file a report and he has, then she would be in big trouble. She'd be stupid to risk it.

Rachel would be smart to renew the license if she ever planned to drive again (can't expect to be so lucky again), but if she stays off the road, nothing will happen to her. Depending on which state you live in, you may have to retake the test once in a while. I've heard some states make you do it every four years. In California, where I live, it's more like 10 or 20 years (or something like that; I haven't had my license for that long, so I don't know for sure).

Driving with an expired license probably isn't the best idea. I don't know what the penalty would be. My guess is that it's on the same level as speeding.

I don't know what the stereotype out there is, but most of the time, they don't seem too bad.

Meanwhile, Jeffery David Brooks is credited as The Male Patron, and Lex Arquette is credited as The Customer. That means that one of them is the guy who had finished (at 5:01 on the DVD) and the other is the man who did not get a birthday present (at 11:51).

Oh, fair enough, in that case I agree with you. It doesn't hurt that Eliott Gould was a big movie star in his day, as was Terri Garr who played Phoebe's mother. But their characters were poor parents.

He always looked good next to Judy, and maybe he redeemed himself with the Porsche, but when Monica was in financial trouble, Ross was the father she never had. And her wish was for Ross's parents, not just Ross's mother.

It means that the whole getup doesn't get in the way. "Some Like It Hot" was filmed in black & white (despite the clause in Monroe's contract that all her movies be in colour) because tests showed that otherwise Curtis & Lemmon looked hideous. You could just accept that Chandler's father looks like a woman, (for which the script carefully prepared you), while if he had been played by Nathan Lane (or John Cleese or William Shatner or Mel Gibson or any of the other actors that we fans thought of) then we would be thinking how he did not look like a woman instead of concentrating on what was important - the emotional byplay between Helena & Chandler.

Chandler undoubtedly exaggerated for the sake of a good anecdote, but having a cross dresser for a father must be a nightmare for an adolescent. Anyway, the fact that they hadn't seen each other in years and Chandler hated his father says a lot.

It worked the other way around for me. He is a man dressed up as a woman, so what better choice than casting a male actor, and dressing him up as a woman? OTOH, most people seemed to like it, so it was probably not a bad choice.

To be honest, if you have 1860 items in your list it looks to me you are deliberately searching for items, instead of only listing things you would really like to see. But that's probably the fun of it.

The gang came round to see this last night - they roared at Joey's story, and were amazed by Chandler & Helena, but they felt that Ross was badly written to be acting so out of (his S7) character.

Yes, but at other speeds it does make a difference. Sitting in the back of the car, the seat back would not support him during a crash in the way that sitting in it would, since the belt is anchored to the body of the car, not the seat. Ross was acting irrationally & stupidly, luckily Rachel was not (as much) and must have stopped the car, and insisted that he either got out, or sat belted into the front seat.

BTW, her eyes would have been closed for longer if she had sneezed.

Once again Ross was being a complete idiot, and it's even worse that he had to be told this - if you don't know the Highway Code (or the American equivalent) then you shouldn't be allowed to drive. I dunno about over there, but the British driving test is far too easy.

BTW, while complaining about Ross, it's really the writing that was at fault - I was so disappointed to see Mental Geller come back after we have been enjoying old Ross again this season. The strange thing is that everything else in this episode was so well written.

I think he's great the way that Elliot Gould plays him, and he never overtly hurts his daughter, but he is neglectful. He failed to support her when she was broke (so Ross had to), he frittered away the money for her wedding (after half-paying for Ross & Emily which he didn't have to) and worst of all he fails to curb what Judy does to her.

The best part of her performance was that Helena's words said one thing but his face said something else.

That was indeed her, and she was brilliant. I love black comedy.

Well, of course there isn't one, since when the motorway is congested everything grinds to a halt, but if the police catch you dawdling along at 30 mph while everything else shoots past, then they will do you.

I took mine while it was snowing, and when I was asked about hand signals I honestly replied that I hadn't been taught them, so the examiner gave me a quick lesson! But I did all my motorbike training with the police, and they were very strict, but also extremely thorough.

I'm hoping it was just a wobble, since he has been getting better, and there are some great Ross episodes in 713-721. But Monica has improved like anything, and Marita says she deserves the girlfriend of the year award for her good behaviour in this episode.

I've noticed that many people are trying to figure out the joke about Ross and the brake lights, and I have to admit that I didn't really think much about it when I watched it for the first time. I just thought Monica was implying that he wore them out.

We learned in 421 that Rachel's licence had expired (in fact, Monica was the one who said it), so it shouldn't come as a surprise that Monica doesn't fancy the thought of Rachel cruising (or was that Porsching? <g>) around in her precious Porsche.

As for the stealing, it shows that all three of the girls have stolen from their friends at one time. Monica in 520, Phoebe in 719 and Rachel in this one. Some have claimed in this thread that it's a trend, but I don't know if I'm willing to take it that far. However, I think we can start to question their morals...

That's weird. In my country you just have to be 16 years old, and then you can drive all you want to together with an adult until you're 18 and can get a licence. Then you need to take a written test, and a course involving e.g. driving in the dark and a couple of hours on a skidpan before you try to get your licence. Perhaps you don't have this rule since you're allowed to get the licence earlier than we do?

I've tried to get people to see that it's not a trend, on the basis that six people who live as closely as that virtually have common property - they certainly give each other freebies worth far more than the odd 20 dollar bill. But if you want to get picky, the biggest thief would be Joey, due to all the food he steals from Monica's fridge.

I don't think that either were silly, Rachel can use her womanly wiles as much as she wants to as far as I am concerned - and if it had been Phoebe in that situation she'd have been exploiting her nipples. And you can't say that Hanson was silly just because he was kind, he was not to know that her companion was even worse. I think the main reason Jake seems so peculiar is that we hardly ever see him, he is a very peripheral character, and yet on the odd occasion that he does put in am appearance, Phoebe goes overboard about him - shouting across Central Perk or reacting to his kiss long after it's over. Let's face it, I just don't trust the guy (he's worse than Gary) so when he is on I just concentrate on how supernally beautiful Monica looked when she rebuffed him.

Yes, although not as great as the title story, this little farce in a basket was rather funnier, and Phoebe came to life in her scenes with Joey, effortlessly played by MLB who is now on tremendous form.

I reckon this was all very clever manipulation of the audience to make us accept Mr.Bing for what he was, and not a freak - which is why they avoided any attempt to surprise us, cast a woman to make him look less jarring, and made Joey explore the consequences of our questions.

It's pure Joey - apply cold logic (like repopulating the world using condoms) and it appears stupid, but explore his subtle strategy and you can see how it gets him what he wants. That ridiculous pick-up line *worked* whereas "How you doin'" never has, it was the panties accidentally coming out of his pocket that undid him.

I could not agree more, Marita. Matthew Perry was (thankfully) back on form, and as you say, the story was there on his face. Yet here as you say it was all in their faces, and if you pause at the right instant the still image captures it beautifully forever.

This was excellent writing, and CCA acting her heart out, both of which the cynics refuse to accept. It's hard to believe that this is the same episode as Mental Geller in the Porsche. But of course the answer is that this was *not* the same episode, since all of Matthew Perry's scenes were filmed at a later date - there were three writers, and (for the first time ever) two directors...

I didn't think of it that way, for Helena's quip fitted so naturally into his cabaret act, but yes you are dead right, sweetie. Helena is much more like Chandler than Nora ever was. But of course that's all down to the writing and Miss Turner's sensitive performance. And do you remember how much Phoebe was like Phoebe when we met her?

That's an interesting explanation, and I think you're right. As a matter of fact, Chandler's dad didn't seem all that weird, perhaps it was all the emotions he was going through or the fact that he used humour the same way as his son, but he wasn't that bad.

I agree 100%. I disliked Chandler in season 3. He was so unnatural, and didn't seem like a real person like the rest of them did. He was a funny "prop" the writers used to get easy laughs, and I'm sooooo glad that "prop" has disappeared. And I for one still think Chandler is funny, but the laughs are more realistic nowadays. Chandler was not that funny when MP was in rehab (figures!), and we have seen examples of that in the past couple of weeks, but he is much better now.

During the first half of season 3 he had his problems with Janice, but none of them were as wonderful and tragic as the ones he had with Kathy and later on Monica. I know that Ross and Rachel were the people to focus on back then, and they were great (except jealous Ross), but I wanted more from the rest of the gang, especially Chandler.

Yeah, she won't. She has the perfect guy who understands just how important all the other stuff is, so Monica will probably be running down the aisle to get married ASAP.

When I accidentally found out that this was not the case, I laughed out loud. So I needed to be very careful with Mr Bing's name...

Oh yes! Teri Garr was brilliant, wasn't she? She must have studied LK's gestures and movements, because she was so incredibly "Phoebe-ish". As for Chandler, I think he's a wonderful mix of both of his parents, but as you said, in this scene it was obvious to everybody that Chandler was a chip off the old block.

If it hadn't been for the men in nothing but wellingtons, I'm sure I would have been even more touched by this lovely scene.

I'm not sure. In a way, Chandler had to grow up fast because his parents were so messed up and embarrassed him in front of the entire neighbourhood, but on the other hand, he didn't really mature until season 4.

However, I think the adult, mature version of Chandler would probably feel very sorry for himself. If Monica had "travelled back in time" together with him, it would have turned out just fine, and he would have talked to his parents and told them how hurt their little boy actually was.

It zooms x4 and x16, and I'm very happy with the player so far! As for the VCDs, the instruction manual says that it doesn't play CDR, CDRW or VCDs. However, the manual also says that it doesn't play anything but region 2 DVDs which is a big lie, so I don't know what to believe. I talked to the guys at the store, and they said it wouldn't play homemade VCDs because it only had one laser. If I wanted one that could play these kinds of discs, I would have to buy one that cost 3300nok (about �250).

Well, my manual doesn't list VCDs either. It says that it plays DVD, SVCD/CVD, CD-MP3, CD-DA/CDI-FMV, CD-R/CD-RW but VCDs aren't mentioned - but it does play them. I guess this is because VCD is included in the SVCD format.

Oh well, I'm no expert, but *never* believe the guys at any store. I'll ask around a bit more, and let you know. Meanwhile, chin up, okay? :)
