Maybe he leaves an always-steaming coffee mug on his desk, like George in _Seinfeld_, so others think that not only is he in, he got in earlier than anyone else and is already busy doing . . . something. Then he shows up every now and then and looks very *annoyed*, so people will think he's very busy and leave him alone.

That was a brilliant episode! I can't believe they don't know what Chandlers job is though... It's not that hard! have you got the friends game? it's well funny. I played it with some of my friends, and they lost and had to go to the busy end of the strteet in their pyjamas at 2am!

True, his mother could've had a trust fund set up for him based on her book proceeds, and he comes from a wealthy background, in general, but I think Chan's been too proud to dip into that for all this time and saved up all that money on his own.

Question: is there a difference between "manager" and "supervisor"? ;-) (I can't believe I got it right. I could've saved the apartment. LOL!)

--- Putting on the legal hat and getting totally anal, I *think* that that amount is based just on when Joey technically "borrowed" from Chan, implying he intended to pay those monies back, not all those times that Chan covered him, as a friend.

Over the years, Chan's implied that he's "paid for" (not "loaned" money for) Joey's acting lessons, his 8x10 glossies, dinners, bottles of wine, etc. And, in the ep where Chan moves in with Mon and is trying to explain bills to Joey, Joey hasn't a clue what all the bills are, implying that Chan has been covering rent and utilities for quite some time.

What has JOEY done for work until his recent success? Cologne guy, experiment guinea pig, working at Mon's restaurant (making good tips), working at Central Perk. We must eliminate his previous success on the soap BECAUSE he overspent and lost everything. Besides, he was only on a few eps. He couldn't have made more than a few thousand during that time anyway. (No-name actor, was probably working just a little above scale per episode.)

Basically, I think Chan was supporting Joey and didn't think twice about it because he had no future plans at the time and Joey is his friend.

Isn't it a tradition in the US that the father of the bride pays for the wedding? Did Chandler and Monica pay for it themselves? I'm not sure if it applies to greek-orthodox weddings though...
