Okay!!!! I was bawling!!!! It is like how I feel when I watch "A Wedding Story" on TLC. I am so glad I totally avoided spoilers. I had an idea about what was going to happen though, but it still didn't ruin it. My heart was racing when Chandler went out to find Monica. When she showed up at Richard's, I had to cover my eyes. Am I being melodramatic?
I liked the B story of the back-up spouse. It reminded me that I was supposed to have a baby with this guy last year. Oooops.
Predictable way to get rid of Elizabeth. Not sure how I feel about this at the moment. Ross had to know that she has an immature side since he partied with her on Spring Break. Maybe he just needed his friends to realize it. But she was definitely made up to look a lot younger in this episode.
I am wondering where Joey got last minute financing for the boat?
All in all, I really enjoyed this episode. No cliffhangers though, but that is understandable considering they weren't sure if they were coming back next season.

I didn't like the way they got rid of Elizabeth. Am I really going to lose my love for water balloon fights between now (I'm 24) and when I'm 30? How sad. :) It just seemed a little silly, and I don't think the Elizabeth from two weeks ago would have stuck her head out a window and yelled "You suck." So Elizabeth follows Kathy, Pete, and Danny. Damn it, I liked her.

Yeah--but really, when Joey told Chandler that Monica was gone, I wondered for a few seconds if they filmed a different ending in case an agreement was made, so they could knock everyone on their asses with a surprise cliffhanger. And then I saw all the candles when Chandler opened the door. :)
Yeah. I guess Joey can act after all! :) But, y'know, had they not come back, it would have been a near perfect end to the show, except that Ross wasn't in the final scene, which I found a bit odd.

Me too. I was totally surprised by that. The writers really got me with that for a second. As for Elizabeth, I'm glad she's gone. But yes, it was predictable. She had to go. This year wasn't a cliffhanger. I'm guessing that is partly due to the fact they weren't sure about the cast signing. I'm glad they did. That gives the writers enough time to come with a great conclusion for this great show. Ohh...I can see the series finale now and all I can say is, it will be GREAT!

Okay, I thought it was a good episode, but I was little surprised by the ending. Not the way everyone else was, though. I guess there is a general agreement that if the show wasn't spoiled for you, that you were pretty surpricsed when C walks in on Mon and the candles. I figured, at that point, that they had filmed the show with two ideas. Either the actors wouldn't come to a deal, in which case everything would be just like it was and they would sum up the storylines in a few episodes next year. Or they would come to a deal.
Now, since they came to a deal, I think a better ending would have been to leav Chandler out side with Joey looking like he did when Joey told him the Mon left for her parents. At least it would have been like a cliffhanger. Then, the writers could have tried to think of something to do over the summer.
On the other hand, they could have had Richard and Monica meet up a few times before he proposed to her, leaving that as the cliffhanger. I guess that would take two much rewriting, though, and would result in two shows completely.
Just my 2 cents. I enjoyed it otherwise. Hopefully it'll be a good few years now.
Not at all. This is my last post in this NG until the new episodes air in the fall and this is the last post I will read--I expect that this NG will be too nasty and pessimistic and whiny during the summer. By reading this one, at least it will end on a nice note.
I thought the whole C&M plot was constructed extremely well. Some excellent work by Perry and Cox-Arquette. And LOVED the whole backup storyline. And Joey shone again--he made the seemingly stupid boat storyline work, and a great look he exhibits when Chandler realizes that Joey set him up.

LOL, sorry, Shaz. Blame ABC for airing Who Wants to Be A Millionaire at 9. I usually make vidcaps from 8:30 to 9, and during the commercials of Millionaire, and get them uploaded before I got to work at 10:30. But I just can't do that when Friends lasts 'til 9. They should hopefully be up today or tomorrow. :)

I thought the confrontation with Phoebe, regarding her picking both Joey and Ross as back-ups, was the best part of the episode.
I love the character of Rachel more with every episode this season. I would so love to be friends with her!
When Ross watched the dinosaur program and said 'What happened, you guys?' I was crying from laughing so hard. I taped the episode and kept rewinding to that scene.
The water balloon fight was pretty funny, brought back some good memories of college. (The whole one semester that I went!)
Tom Selleck played Richard very true to character. He remained very likable and realistic.
CCA's hair looks really good. I like that color. MP's hair really needs to be washed. However I don't want to digress into a discussion of the star's appearances.
Oh, but I do have to say that whoever in wardrobe picked out the outfit that Monica wore to Richard's apartment needs to be slapped with a wet noodle.
If any of the cast gets an Emmy nod this year, it needs to be MLB. How he can take the worst of stories and make them so entertaining is beyond me, but I applaud him!
Being a huge M/C fan I thought that I would really enjoy their storyline. But I didn't. I felt like Monica, with her surprise and candles and getting down on her knees, stole Chandler's moment away from him. I found their speeches to one another too sappy and cutesy for my liking. I guess what Chandler said to Monica was okay, but I could have done without the crying, and he should have said it while down on one knee, surprising her with a proposal. I'm sure I'm not in the majority on this one, but that's how I felt.
I also didn't like how, between the candles, his suit and her dress, and the slow-dancing at the end, this reminded me of their scenes in TOW Unagi.
It was nice to see MP give a dramatic performance for once.
I loved the finale! It was soooo good! I was crying at the end when C&M got engaged! I was wondering where Joey got the money for the boat too! I'm so glad that this was only a season finale and not a series finale cuz now we'll get to find out what will happen!

I have very mixed feelings about the whole story.
1. For the most part I thought the Chandler/Monica/Richard story was very well done. And yet, call it sour grapes if you want, but of course I couldn't help wondering where was all this heart-felt writing when Ross and Rachel needed it? The best they've ever been able to manage for those two is a heart-rending scene where the two separate "for good". My petulant side is jealous.
2. As time has passed, I have identified more and more each season with Chandler. As I look at him today, dumpy looking geek that he is, proposing to a beautiful woman like Monica and having her say "yes", all I can say is, "You lucky dog, you!" It is cool to see someone with all the insecurities that Chandler has "score!" Of course, this is fiction and not real life. And even in real life, seeing someone else like yourself "make it" may seem encouraging for about 30 seconds, but then it only makes you more frustrated that it's not happening for you.
Actually, I'm not fond of this "back-up" idea. I understand where it comes from, but it seems kind of pathetic.
I don't know about predictable, but I sure bored by this sub-plot. Don't know exactly why, but I was.
As soon as they mentioned the boat, I saw the whole thing coming.
After spending 9 hours (!!!!!) on the internet downloading it, I was finally able to see it a couple of hours ago. And oh my god... Was it worth it? Without a doubt!
I read the spoilers for this one about a month ago, because I figured I wouldn't be able to see it until September or something, and finding out about some major storylines, I just couldn't wait to find out what was going to happen.
Okay, the major storyline was of course Chandler and Monica. I've read several posts complaining about this, and I really don't understand why. They have been together for two years now. They're living together, and Chandler has told her he is willing to have children with her. I think it was time to take their relationship to a new level. With Monica being -- well, Monica -- I think it just made sense that it would either end in a true commitment, or something kind of like a break-up.
I thought it was really sweet of the gang to support Chandler the way they did in the beginning. Who would have thought two years ago that Ross would be so excited about his best friend proposing to his little sister? :)
One of the best scenes in the first part was definitely Chandler in the apartment rehearsing the proposal. I laughed out loud when he started saying "Hey! You marry me!!" Did he learn that from his pal, Bruce Willis, perhaps? :)
The scene with Ross in Elizabeth's apartment was funny, but seeing her with that hair-do (cute little braids) made me wonder how he fell for her in the first place. She just seemed so young!
I liked the part at the charity event. Phoebe talking French? Hilarious!! But it got even funnier after Joey got his precious boat. I wonder what he will do with that next season (if the writers remember it, that is). Hey, what if Chandler and Monica get married onboard it? Her father would certainly love that, seeing that he already wants to be buried at sea. :)
I was afraid that the Joey-as-a-captain story would be like the hand-twin thing last year. Fortunately, MLB pulled it off beautifully and proved that he knows his way around a charity event... I just hope we'll get to see him sailing in the nearest future.
The storyline with Ross, Phoebe, Rachel and Joey was funny. (BTW, did anyone notice that Ross was wearing a pink shirt? Have we seen him in that colour since he dated Bonnie?) I think it hinted about the future. I know that the R+R fans out there are *really* frustrated by now, and I don't blame you, but in the next two seasons I'm sure there will be something for that couple as well.
And now to the big thing. Richard turned out to be a good guy after all. The fact that he stepped aside after that talk with Chandler proves that he is a really decent guy, and we got to see why Monica loved him so much back in season two.
After Monica had been in his apartment for a while, and they cut back to her studying that African thing hanging on the wall, I began wondering if she was drunk, especially after she started talking to that "thing". Would Richard really get her drunk to win her? Luckily, I was proved wrong, and when Monica left Richard's apartment it really seemed like she was going to pick him.
The scene between Chandler and Richard is one of the best ever, IMO. I don't think I've ever seen MP so serious before, and I really enjoyed that. I'm not saying I want him like that all the time, but I think this part showed that the show is still about people, not clowns.
And what about that cute scene with Chandler and Joey in the hallway? :)
Of course, the proposal itself was the highlight, IMHO. I had never thought a Friends-episode would make me have tears in my eyes, but this one did. MP and CCA were fabulous in the proposal-scene.
BTW: Is it just me or did it look like Matthew Perry had lost some weight? I thought he looked great!
David Scwimmer cannot quit his exercise. He looks fab. So does CCA. I know a lot of you hate the fact that the girls have long hair now, but I like it.
I loved the fact that a Friends-episode dealt with some really "heavy" emotional stuff.
My conclusion: I loved this episode. Easily the best of the season alongside The One That Could Have Been. TO That Could Have Been was ROFLOL funny, while this one was just so special. It was dramatic, funny, romantic etc. :)
