I just watched an old Friends in syndication, it was Ross and Rachel's first date. He takes her to a movie that has subtitles and she says "I didn't want to wear my glasses on the first date".
Have we ever seen Rachel in glasses?

That would have been a viable explanation until the writers decided Rachel can't bear to touch her eyes, put anything near her eyes, or put drops in them in 5.22 (Joey's Big Break).
Maybe she silently had LASIK surgery? Or the writers dropped the Rachel-wears-glasses premise.

She never said that she needs them all of the time. Maybe she just has trouble reading subtitles in a dark theater. I know I can see most things fine, but I can't read from a distance.
