David on The Tonight Show - Small Spoiler at the End

Hi, I'm de-lurking to share with you David's appearance in The Tonight Show.

David started telling a story about Yoga. He said that he started taking Yoga classes thinking that it will help him relax during this holiday season, but that at the end it didn't work for him, and that he will never go back to try yoga. He was quite funny telling the story but I didn't find it as funny as the story he told right after that.

Leno asked him if he'd ever been "starstruck" when working with someone and he told a story about 6D7N. He mentioned that his idol is Harrison and that he was so nervous when he first met him during the filming of this movie. He said that during the rehearsals of one of the scenes in the plane, Harrison kept stealing one of David's lines, here Quinn's girlfriend held up a tiny bikini and David's line was, "I thought it was an eye-patch." (which was supposed to be probably the only funny line for him on that scene.) David said that he couldn't believe that his hero was doing that to him, and he just couldn't say anything to him because he was too intimidated. Finally, when they were filming the final scene, Harrison started saying the line, and David couldn't stop himself and blurted the line at the same time. The director said "cut" and went to talk to Harrison, and that is when Harrison turned to David and apologize to him. David said that Harrison was very apologetic and very nice. But this is not the end of the story. David continued saying that on the day of the premiere, he was sitting with his family watching the movie, and the "funny line" came up and it "tanked", nobody laughed. Then David's mom turned to him and told him that that line would've been funnier if Harrison had said it, instead of him. David said that he could imagine Harrison smiling at this. It was really cute and much funnier the way David told the story.

Finally, they mentioned Friends, and David said that he has directed three episodes so far. And that it was lots of fun to be a director and that he loves to do it. They showed a clip of the last episode he directed, and is the one where he teaches Phoebe how to ride a bike. The scene was Ross giving Phoebe a bike as a present. The bike looked like a bike for little girls� pink with a basket. Phoebe was very happy and said that it was the best present she had ever got, and told Ross that she loved him... but not in "that" way. It was a cute scene and I could see a little bit of the old Ross back. I don�t know if I heard wrong, but I thought Leno said that this episode was going to be on this coming Thursday. I'm sure they meant, Thursday of next week, and not this one.

One final comment. I'm sure that during the negotiations David insisted that, as part of the deal, he was going to direct certain amount of episodes. But what I was wondering is, if he gets more money than the others when he directs the episodes. I would guess he does, since directing it's a lot work. What do you think?

I think in all probability, he does it for no extra due to the fact that he has to do very little acting during those weeks, due to being cut mostly out of storylines.

I'd be very suprised if they weren't all being assistant directors when DS is doing his thing. He probably doesn't carry the full directing burden, just the fun bits :)

This was the first time I'd ever seen David in an interview, and, quite frankly, I was not impressed. Leno was practically falling asleep through both the Yoga and the Harrison Ford stories. Could David BE more interesting? NOT!!! Definitely not a guy you'd invite twice to a dinner party.

I really did my best to separate him from Ross during this interview, but I saw the same character. Since I don't see myself going to or renting any of his films in the future, I hope he makes whatever monies he can now.

Please let me know when MP or LK will next be interviewed, so I can properly recover from this one.

David's interviews are kind of reminiscent of Ross' dreidel (?) or computer stories, long and meandering. I do get the sense of a dry wit and general nice guy attitude, though.

MP, in my opinion, is by far the best of the six in interviews. He comes across as a likeable, funny, normal kind of guy, and always seems to have prepared himself with a variety of jokes and self-deprecating stories. LK sometimes seems oddly unlikable to me, and rarely seems to want to talk about the show. CCA seems like the prom queen who wants everyone to know that she is in touch with the little people (no offense intended, I'm sure she is a very nice person). JA, in an interview with Conan O"Brien, was very giggly and spacey. MLB was dragged through an interview with ROsie O'Donnell in a discussion about mail order catalogs, and seemed very uncomfortable with the whole process.

I thought David got better as the Leno interview went on, but clearly he doesn't have the rapport with Leno that MP has.

Just my opinion.

BTW, you spell Hanukkah the way my spell-checker does, but I often see the word written as "Chanukah". Why is this? Are both forms correct?

Sorry, can't help you there. I spelled it the way my dictionary spelled it. I'm not very well versed on Jewish culture.

As far as the other 4 go, I've never found them particularly interesting

during interviews. Matt Leblanc just seems plain weird. He always seems uncomfortable and never has much to say.

Even though I'm sure Lisa Kudrow and Jennifer Aniston are nice people, their "celebrityism"(I know that's probably not a word, if it's not, it is today courtesy of me) always seems to shine through in their personality.

And then there's Matthew Perry. Maybe it's just me but I find MP to be the least interesting during interviews. I think one reason is because he always seems so full of himself and that he has "I'm Matthew Perry" written on his forehead during his interviews. Another reason is because he always seems so fake, as if he's not being himself. His interviews tend to be more about putting on a comedy sketch than answering honest questions. I think this guy is gonna have "Chandler Bing" written on his tombstone because that's who he is on T.V., that's who he is in just about *every* movie he's been in, and that's who he apparently tries to be in real life.

As far as the others, Lisa can be a little on the bitchy side when she's interviewed. She doesn't seem to like being asked questions. Matthew can be charming but appears love himself a bit too much. And in the interviews I've seen with MLB, he barely speaks at all.

No comments on CCA and JA since I haven't seen them interviewed recently.

If you have a satellite dish, it's on Astra D -- on my old Amstrad box, you have to add a converter for the last complement of channels, switch to it, and pick channel 2. Don't know how universal that is.
