7 years in the making?

In the promos for the upcoming Monica/Chandler wedding, it says "an event that has been 7 years in the making." So does this mean that ever since the show started, the writers had the idea of Monica and Chandler being a couple and getting married on the backburner?

I guess that would make sense since they got together right when the whole Ross/Rachel thing was dying down (aside from Rachel running to London to try to stop the wedding, and Ross saying "Rachel" at his wedding, but nothing really happened between the two of them after that, except of course when they were drunk and got married in Las Vegas :-).

So if the writers knew from day one that they'd be putting Monica and Chandler together, were there any clues given that implied they were a future couple? The only one I can think of is that old episode (I think it's from the first season) where Chandler tries making a pact with Monica that if neither of them were married by the time they're 40, that they'd get married.

Funny enough though, if you watch old episodes prior to the episode in London where they have sex for the first time, the two of them never really seemed to be good friends. They seemed more like acquaintances than friends. Perhaps the writers made it like that on purpose, since in a recent episode where they show a flashback of Monica and Chandler getting in bed together in London, Monica said something like "you know this will ruin our friendship" and Chandler replies "Ehh, we were never that good of friends anyway." I don't know, what do you guys all think?

If it was from an interview I also remember an interview that mentions that there was an ongoing hidden love between C & M. If you rewatch the first season you can see it. In no way to you see chandler gay or joey and monica.

There were those constant jokes about Chander giving out a gay-vibe... throughout various seasons. But since they joke about it so much, I kinda figured that they definately don't want him to be gay.

I hope this doesn't go beyond hinting. They work well as friends, but I think coupling them would be a mistake. Let David the physicist (Hank Azaria) finish his work in Minsk and return to Phoebe--I liked them together.

I should have said, Chandler was written gay in the first episode. Lisa Kudrow acknowledged it in a recent magazine interview. But then they decided to make him straight and use the "gay" thing as a joke.

In "TOW The Blackout," Joey and Monica are first hinted. "TOW The Flashback" is also a good Joey and Monica episode, as is "TOW The Jam." "TOW The Truth About London" has some hinting of what could have been.

I know "TOW The Flashback" must be the one where it shows Joey moving in and Monica having the hots for him. And "TOW The Truth about London" must be the recent episode where it's revealed Monica actually went to Joey before going to Chandler in London. What is "TOW The Blackout" and "TOW The Jam"??

"TOW The Blackout" has Phoebe reveal to Joey that Monica had a crush on him (which we later find out in "TOW The Flashback"). "TOW The Jam" has Monica crying on Joey's shoulder about getting married and having babies.

Okay while that's all well and good, there have been many more hints about Chanlder and Monica that dominates any past ideas for Joey and Monica. You can find them all throughout the series upto them getting together.

But, what about flashbacks to when Monica was in highschool and Ross would bring Chandler home? She had a crush on him then...

I've read in interviews that they were just suposed to be flirtatious with each other, and then a lot of viewers made suggestions that it go further since there was that underlying companionship-type attraction.

Sure, but don't forget these were revisionist flashbacks created after Monica and Chandler had gotten together on the show. In TOW the Prom Video, remember that Chandler was surprised to see FatMonica on the tape, since at that point the writers hadn't decided that they'd met back then.

Way back "The One with the Standard Title" aka "Pilot" we learn of Ross's infactuation with Rachel then everything that followed- Julie, Pablo, Mark. "We were on a break" I bet that Ross is the father.

As others have posted, Monica/Joey was supposed to be the dark horse relationship (I think I read that in EW), but decided to do Monica/Chandler instead.

And as for their friendship, they've been portrayed as the closest male/female friends on the show from the start. They talked about that in the flashback ep where Joey moved in with Chandler. Chandler was the one to comfort her when Ben was born and she thought she'd never have kids. It's just the vibe I've always gotten.

You know, while we've seen just about every important moment in their history together, I don't think they've ever flashbacked to the time they actual became friends. You know, when Chandler finished college and they started living across the hall from each other and going to the bar together. There has to be a story in there somewhere.
