914: Steve and the Greeter Girl

It's great to see Jon Lovitz is making another appearance on the show in this week's episode (914: TOW The Blind Dates). He is one of those guys that could be funny just reading names from the phone book. According to the official description, Phoebe purposely sets Rachel up on a blind date with the lowlife character played by Lovitz in an effort to get her and Ross back together. If this picture from NBCmv.com is any indication, it should be very funny: http://www.onlink.net/~jrbry/lovitz.jpg The surprising thing is that it appears the writers have Lovitz as Steve, the same character he played all those years ago in the first season. He was the pothead restaurant owner who spoiled Monica's dinner in 115: TOW The Stoned Guy. It will be almost eight years, less one week, since his last appearance. It will be interesting to see how Phoebe describes him to Rachel and if Rachel remembers they had met before: "Hello, Greeter Girl." This whole episode has a kind of retro tone to it, reminiscent of the early seasons, as the friends work together to get through their various dating problems. Another note: most Lisa Kudrow fans will know that Lovitz played an important part in Lisa's early career. As a friend of her brother, he encouraged her to try acting and comedy so she likely feels some obligation to help him out when she can, although I can't imagine he needs the work. It would be nice to see them do some scenes together, for example a confrontation between the irresponsible Steve and the more aggressive Phoebe.
