I personally don't understand why people think Survivior 2 is interesting. I nearly fell asleep during the first Survivor.

AP Entertainment 'Survivor' Narrowly Beats 'Friends'

NEW YORK (AP) -- Round one of the Great Television War goes to ''Survivor II.''

CBS' hit reality series scored a narrow victory over the NBC sitcom ''Friends'' on Thursday night in their heavily hyped matchup, according to Nielsen Media Research.

Between 8 and 8:30 p.m., ''Survivor II'' scored a 17.1 rating and a 25 audience share, while ''Friends'' had a 16.6 rating and 24 audience share, according to Nielsen's overnight measurement.

During the second half-hour, ''Survivor II'' had a rating of 19.8 and a 28 share. The last 10 minutes of ''Friends'' increased to a 17.4 rating and 24 share, and a 20-minute ''Saturday Night Live'' special had a 13.7 rating and 19 share.

The overnight ratings measure viewership in 49 major media markets representing two-thirds of the nation's 102.2 million television households. One ratings point equals 675,000 homes, while the share is the percentage of in-use televisions tuned to a given show.

More precise ratings numbers were due later Friday.

Based on the overnight ratings, it appears ''Friends'' had something close to its typical audience for a first-run show. ''Survivor II'' drew much of its viewers from people who usually don't watch TV at that time or watch something other than ''Friends,'' said David Poltrack, CBS' top research executive.

''It was a very good night for network television,'' Poltrack said.

The showdown is serious business for network television. By airing ''Survivor II'' on Thursdays, CBS was hoping to cut into NBC's viewership on a night it has dominated for nearly two decades.

NBC responded aggressively, adding 10 minutes to ''super size'' ''Friends'' each week this month, and airing the special 20-minute ''Saturday Night Live'' prime-time edition.

Still, NBC at least had fun with it. ''Saturday Night Live'' used opening credits that were a dead knockoff of the ''Survivor'' opening, saying it was ''13 cast members, 20 minutes, one frightened network.''

And actor Chris Parnell, impersonating Tom Brokaw, narrated a ''news break'' telling NBC viewers that the Kucha tribe had won the week's immunity challenge on ''Survivor II'' -- only seconds after it was broadcast on CBS.

NBC declared victory, despite its narrow loss.

''They took their shot with the biggest cultural phenomenon of the year, and I think must-see TV prevailed,'' said Alan Wurtzel, NBC's chief researcher.

I concur, Survivor is lame. It's a bunch of scantily clad pretty people playing games. Boring! Give me Friends any day. Personally, I thought last nights episode was one of the best ones in several months.

Well said, and to those who actually thought that Survivor was considered Reality, Take a closer look as to how staged that stupid show is.

OK, first of all, Kelly was on Survivor 1, not Friends. Unless you mean Kel, who was on Survivor 2 for about five minutes. And while I am one of the many people who is currently watching Survivor rather than Friends, I think it is far more likely that this head to head will hurt some executives than the cast of Friends. I also think Survivor only lasts 13 weeks.

One more thing. The present cast of Survivor has turned out to be an unusually malignant and nasty bunch - there are people there that make Richard Hatch look like a big naked teddy bear who just wanted to have a little crafty fun. If they continue in the same poisonous vein, I suspect this fad is going to die down - in a way no show has done for me since... Monica and Chandler got to have a great big maudlin, horribly overdone proposal scene and Ross and Rachel considered a cold-blooded, businesslike backup plan. My own enthusiasm for Survivor got cut in half last Thursday night.

Both programs have now jumped the shark.
