Brought down to your knees....

Hi, I need to find out what they mean by the line "But she didn't tell you when the world was brought down to your knees" in the theme song. How could I describe the meaning of this?

Its... "Your mother warned you there'd be days like these But she didn't tell when the world has brought you down to your knees..." And its just reinforcing the theme of the series that family helps you prepare for life, but after you leave the protection of the family and start on your own you may not be as prepared as you expected and thats when your friends are there to help and become, in a way, your new family. "I'll be there for you" is implying the I as your friends.

So an example...you find you failed an exam in college and it was really important. That may bring you down and you don't know what to do. You may not want to call home and discuss it with a parent because you konw they may give a lecture or tell you stuff you don't want to hear at the moment, so who would you turn to? Your friends that are probably going through the same issues. An exam may be a bad example, but think of more of the topics less discussed with parents like sex, drugs, relationships, etc.
