As a single episode story, it might work. Just a jokey thing, like when he had that dream about doing the crossword puzzle with Monica and thought he was love with her.

But I wouldn't have thought they would drag something like that out over the season.

Well, it's not unheard of. A guy who plays the straight scene for years and dates tons of women, only to realize that he can't commit or has a horrid track record with things ending badly... but in Joey's case I doubt it.
