Okay, here's Part 2...

Many people have wondered what was supposed to happen in TOW Unagi, and I am one of them. A while back someone posted a spoiler saying Rachel would prove to Ross she could fix a sink, and they would almost kiss before being interupted by Chandler. This obviously didn't happen, but was it supposed to?

As most people know, the original title for 617 was TOW The Mixed Tape. The NBC website listing showed the Chandler/Monica/Janice mix tape story, the Joey twin story, and a mysterious Ross/Rachel sink story. After about a week the title was changed to TOW Unagi, and the sink story disappeared, replaced by the unagi story.

After 613-614 a R&R reunion seemed very possible again. But just like Ross "re-loving" Rachel, it led nowhere.

But the mystery deepens....

As I recall, there was never a spoiler for 618. But we did have one for 619. At the 619 taping Ross and Elizabeth's scenes for BOTH 618 and 619 were done. So what was Ross doing at the 618 taping?

Here are my theories for the missing sink story:

1) It was in an early draft, but was cut out and never taped. The whole spoiler was just a hoax to fool everyone. David simply missed the 618 taping, and that is why his scenes were all taped during 619.

2) The sink spoiler was real all along and was taped. But it was dropped due to Bruce Willis joining the show, and that is why both Elizabeth stories were done at the same taping--to replace the already filmed sink story. The producers thought a Bruce/Jennifer pairing would equal high ratings (In my opinion they had ZERO chemistry. But Bruce and David were great together, and should have been used in 623 instead of the stupid crying). Due to C&M's engagement already in the works for the finale, the Ross/Rachel story was put off until Season Seven or later.

3) Since there was a chance of no Season Seven, they wanted to give R&R a happy ending. The sink story was taped and planned to be used instead of the "backup" story in 625. But the actors signed new contracts, so an abrupt R&R reunion was no longer necessary, and thus put off again.

I completely agree with this point. I've had it verified by someone I trust, and the "kiss" ending was filmed away from the audience. They needed a part for Bruce Willis, so they wrote him in as sloppily as possible. It would have been so much better for JOEY to date Elizabeth, like Rachel said in 6.24.

Don't forget the disappearance of Elle. "TOW The Apothecary Table" (an episode I liked, BTW) was not supposed to be her final episode. She left early because she didn't "fit in" with the cast. I really don't think we can blame the writers fully for this one. We can blame Elle MacPherson and Matthew Perry off the top of my head.

Yeah because Bruce was a friend and it could bring viewers for the sweeps period.. I don't think it's fair to say it's his fault that Ross & Rachel didn't kiss or whatever, they could have kept him on as Elizabeth's dad only and made him go out w/ Phoebe. (I mean she hasn't been on a date since, what the cop?) Matthew Perry doesn't deserve to be blamed because of it, blame the writers cause they ultimately decided what to air on tv. Besides, Bruce donated his Friends salary to a charity so I'm happy that some good came out of his appearance on a TV show. Plus I thought for the most part he was pretty funny.

I'm not *blaming* him as much as I'm blaming the writers. It's just that this problem would never have risen if not for Perry. The writers chose to go in this direction...I think that Elizabeth would have been better off dating Joey. Ross always seemed like her father to me. Joey, while he would have been the same age, could have fit right in. Then, at the end of the relationship, he could realize that his behavior was sort of childish and possibly decide to grow up a little.

Alright, lets say they had scrambled things a little. Joey was dating Elizabeth, and, in an attempt to smooth things over, Phoebe ended up dating Paul. There might have not been as much tension as before, but one joke would have remained the same.

Rachel: Ross, what's the big deal? So I kissed the guy! Ross: He is my girlfriend's father, okay? It's-it's, it's weird! Rachel: Wh-You dated my sister! Ross: That was different! Rachel: What? Why?! Ross: This is weird for me!

Replace Ross with Joey and Rachel with Phoebe, and the joke still works perfectly. Phoebe accidentally saying how Joey has quite possibly had sex with every woman in the tri-state area is even funnier than Rachel saying Ross has been married 3 times. Despite some theories about the Vegas wedding and the Jill storyline and where they were originally supposed to go, I think those were just (rather mean) teases to the audience. Despite any unforseen circumstances (i.e. Jennifer Aniston getting pregnant in real life) the writers seem content to keep C&M as the couple of the moment and let R&R fans watch the syndication episodes. There is something of a "Don't worry, they'll get back together eventually" mentality I share with most R&R fans, which is probably what Bright, Kaufmann and Crane want the fans to have. I'm just hoping the R&R reunion will be done properly. Whether or not the reunion will be done before or during the final episode is anybody's guess. With two more years on schedule, I don't think BK&C are in much of a rush.

Very interesting point..I somehow don't think the writers would be smart enough to do that, but that would be an interesting thing to put in there. I guess they didn't because they had to prepare for the fact they may not have been coming back (although I think they believed they would continue for at least another year), and to end it on a R&R cliffhanger like that might piss the fans off again since they always do that in the finales, then they have a friendship moment in the premier and forget about it till about 9 months later when it's finale time again.
