As we left the last thread it was said: "Not all successful movies are good movies. All good movies are successful!"
There are always exceptions to the rule. Rocky Horror Picture Show BOMBED at the theater & now is a HUGE cult classic that has been running for about 30 years. It became a success long after it was ruled a box office bust!
On the whole yes, They measure success by profits. There is also times when its measured by talent. A good publicist/advertising campaign can make for a profitable movie. Just look at "The Blair Witch Project". That movie made a HUGE profit but most of the people we suffering motion sickness thanks to the unsteady hand of the camera man. It was the way they advertised the film that brought it the success it achieved. Not the quality of the movie or story.
(redeeming myself to make this post on topic for this NG) Now FRIENDS was not only well filmed, written & promoted but the combination of the cast & their friendship & chemistry came through on the screen & that is what made them so successful. FRIENDS deserved it from all sides!
