Phoebes kids?

Whatever happened to Phoebes kids? Did her brother move out of the country? I know the mom is on the 70s show but its pretty amazing that they completely dumped that whole storyline.

As it often happens in Hollyood, recurring character actors get work elsewhere, and simply aren't available or interested in reprising a role. You mentioned the mom moving to That 70s Show; in this case, Giovanni Ribisi has gotten into a movie career which seems to be taking him places. You'll note him in movies like The Mod Squad, Gone in 60 Seconds and most prominently as that medic in Saving Private Ryan - all roles that followed his last appearance on Friends.

I'm guessing the actor wants to concentrate on more serious roles and wouldn't want to go back to the role (and pay) of the occasional recurring character. if he were to go back to that role, I'm sure that they'd have to pay him a lot more than they used to.

When was the last time we saw Ross's first wife? I don't think recently, though I can't remember, and unless it was the flashback episode (where she first pursues a lesbian relationship, via a threesome), has her lover shown up as recently? (Remember, a different character played the ex-wife for the first couple of times, and maybe she didn't want to stay "ready" for the show. Or maybe she ended up doing something else.) The less a character is used, the harder it will be to get the actor to play the role again.

If you can't count on the actor being available, it makes a lot of sense to forget about the character, and use single-shot characters when someone new is needed.

The lover had a more prominent role in The Single Guy, which probably suited the actress better, because it was a regular role.

I suppose it works well if an actor can get minor roles in more than one show, because they get stability, but they are more likely to be available. The only example I can come up with at the moment is the actor who played "Newman" on Seinfeld. The show could live without him, but he kept coming back. But, and I'm not sure how much the time frame overlapped, he also had a recurring role on "Third Rock From the Sun". Waiting around to be called for two shows is probably a better situation than waiting for one show to call you back.

Quite. It can be really annoying, though, when you've come to like the recurring characters -- this was a particular problem in Mad About You, because the peripheral characters were so good. (Richard Kind got Spin City, Leila Kenzle got Diresta, and the actress who played Lisa also got a show. Plus they kept recasting Jamie's parents, but that's another story.)

Every great once in a while Pheobe will make a short and small reference that she spent time with her neices and nefew that she gave birth to. They haven't done it in a while though.
