I accept your point about LK's frustration but with severe reservations. I agree it's essential that actors be offered new challenges in order to maintain the energy levels needed to keep their performances vibrant. However, in Phoebe's case, I fail to see how a badly grafted mean streak helps this process. In the episode, TOW the routine, it is painfully transparent the writers fell over themselves loading Kudrows script with a barrel of cheap shots. I can't help wondering how fans would react if Joey suddenly developed a high IQ because Matt LeBlanc got bored playing dumb or Ross became a hard drinking womanizer instead of a mild mannered palaeontologist. Obviously I'm exaggerating to make the point, as I really don't believe Phoebe has changed that much. I just feel a delicately crafted character, articulated by a deft performance, has suddenly become a little crass.

I don't think it's unreasonable for a character who we normally only see behave in a certain way to behave out of sorts on occassion; plus is this really so out of character? We know that Phoebe is intelligent, capable of ripping it just as much as Chandler is (think of her and Ross talking about Rachel in 603), capable of being mean (think of how she treated Leslie her ex-partner in 314) - why shouldn't she have a bit of fun with Chandler?
