Okay, I have to bring this up *again* because every time i think about it i get infuriated(yea i know its just a show).

Ross and Rachel were on "a break." Does that mean that they "broke up"? Thats what i thought had happened. And I think that Ross slept with that woman because it was like a "break affair" as i call it. I've heard of this many times. After a big relationship people go and escape with another person...does that mean that Ross immediately stopped loving Rachel because he slept with that woman....nooo. Okay, so Rachel...being the @#$!* that she is...blamed Ross for everything. Now...how can any of you honestly think Rachel is being sane then? They were on a break...which means they weren't together...which means you can see other people(thats how i look at it).

Did Rachel think they might get back together after the break?...And thats why she was even more mad? because she didn't think they had broken up?? Because for the LIFE OF ME...i can not understand how anybody could not be mad or mindboggled by Rachel's completely ridiculous attitude of Ross being a jerk and that there was NO BREAK.

Sorry if you guys didn't want to hear this again...but i had to speak now or forever hold my peace.

When she said she needed a break, I took it as she needed more space. I just assumed she meant that they needed some time away from each other to cool off and have fun with friends. I didn't think that they had broken up. this is probably exactly why they worte the episode the way they did. So that no one would really know exactly what was going on because everyone takes things different ways. That is just my opinion though.

It was certainly ambiguous on purpose. I will say that Rachel told Monica that she broke up with Ross - causing Monica to squirt stuff on the ceiling - but his behavior is questionable. So is hers. Blech.

Not to rehash this old debate, however it seems to me that when Rachel said that she and Ross needed to take a break, Ross thought that she meant from the arguement. Rachel says, "No, I mean a break from us." Rachel told Monica about it the next morning making it pretty clear that they had at least temporarily broke up.

The reason i brought it up was to "rehash" it, so please...rehash,lol.

And I find "temporary break up" to sound like an oxymoron. You either break up or you don't. Temporary break up is a selfish thing of Rachel to ask, if thats what she meant by "taking a break" because you can't move on with your life and you don't know if you will get back together.

Horrific mistakes were made on both sides. It was over a long time ago.

My view on this is not whether or not R&R were "on a break" but in my opnion this doesn't matter. If they were actually "on a break" and just needed time to think things through and they were still together, then it is obvious that what Ross did was wrong. Then he cheated! But if "on a break" meant that they had really broken up and he slept with someone a few hours later, then he isn't a very decent human being (only my opnion). The fact is that if he really loved Rachel and didn't really want to be "on a break" (any of the two above definitions) then he wouldn't have slept with someone so quickly after. Then he wanted Rachel to take him back? Well, I believe that in ordance with both of my definitions that Rachel had every right to be as upset with him as she was. Consider the options: either he cheated or he slept with someone right after breaking up with his girlfriend and expected her to have open arms for his return. I am not debating what "on a break" means because I truly believe that Rachel and Ross thought that it was something different.

But remember, Ross called Rachel from the club and he heard MARK in the background. I don't think he would have done anything if he didn't hear Mark's voice. Try to imagine what that would be like: Your girlfriend tells you she needs a "break" and when you try to apologize, she's got another guy over there--and not just any other guy but the very one that (albeit indirectly) caused all of the problems in the relationship to begin with. I think that's what drove Ross over the edge. Granted, this was a huge misunderstanding on Ross' part, but considering his long-standing feelings for Rachel, I think she could've at least tried to forgive him (especially since Ross hardly fits the 'womanizer' mold).

On Tue, 15 Jan 2002, Sofya stated this considered view. Waking from my doze, I hastily scrawled -

He slept with her only because he was upset, and smashed out of his head!

Actually, the one real pertinent question regarding this episode:

Let us assume that the circumstances can be interpreted in more than one way. Rachel took the hardest and most unforgiving valid line of thinking. Was that in her best interests? Is she happier because of it? It's the only issue that matters.
