8-24 Cliffhanger (my imagination running wild)

How's this for a season finale: Ross and Joey each ask Rachel to marry them while she is one her way to the hospital to have the baby. She doesn't choose until 9-01 (or later).

Now *there* is a cliff from which we could all hang for the summer!

Obviously, they wouldn't get down on their knees for this emergency proposal. You could have the both of them sit next to Rachel in the cab and propose. Or you could have them running alongside screaming "Will you marry me?" "No, you marry me?" while's she's being wheeled into on the labor room. Ofcourse there wouldn't be any cliffhanger because Rachel wouldn't want to marry either one of them :)

Cliffhanger?? no way! As we saw in 816 and817, Rachel has NO FEELINGS for Joey! This is ridiculous to think that she's hiding feelings...geez...some people never stop dreaming. Now Rachel and Ross is something not only possible but I'm betting will occur before the show ends next spring.

Rachel didn't have ANY feelings for Ross throughout season one. She only thought of him as "Monica's geeky older brother" more or less.

There was that one time (pilot) when Ross set the stage to ask her out, but he never did. Rachel recalls in 1-24 (after she finds out that he still has a thing for her), "my first night in the city, he mentioned something about asking me out, but nothing ever happened, so I just . . . " So, she blew it off. Never thought anything about it.

Rachel needs to be confronted first, then given time to soak it in. So, the idea that she might find hidden feelings for Joey are a real possibility. I hate to say it because I'm a Ross/Rachel fan, but I can live with it either way. I just wonder if I could live with her not ending up with either. How's THAT for a possibility?

Way too easy. Aren't there any other things to make a season finale / cliffhanger from than break-up, come-together, proposal, marriage and baby? I even don't like the fact that the baby's born in 824/5 -- so predictable. The other cliffhanger I'm afraid of is Monica announcing she's having a baby too. Or the baby having difficulties to survive. Some parents or other relative could die and bequeath a house to a Friend, thus there's the question whether they'll all stay in NYC. Same for job offer. After Rachel dumped Joey I've given up my cliffhanger idea of Rachel lying in bed with someone we can't see clearly enough to identify and saying "I love you.". That one could still be used as a in-season cliffhanger, when there's a yet unknown third one and Ross.

That would be a good cliff-hanger indeed. Knowing that the guy could be anyone: Ross, Joey, a total stranger, ...

Christoph PäperFaskil [BNG]

"Faskil [BNG]":

And even if it's Ross, they need not to have had sex, he might just have fallen asleep after caring for the baby. That "I love you." doesn't have to mean "I'm in love with you." neither. But after all for this to work as a cliffhanger you need Rachel, Ross and a third one and I highly doubt Joey could be this third one at the end of the actual season and there's noone else in sight yet.

Everyone seems to hint at a Rachel\Ross\Joey cliffhanger. Could it be possible at a subconcious level we don't have much faith in the creative abilities of BKC?

Rachel's pregnancy was brilliant and conjured up by the writers in the last minute and left to sort out in season eight. No one saw that coming and it worked because not much though went into it. The writers are going to have it tough topping that season ender.

Christoph PäperNARAG

"NARAG" :

Not me (no Joey!), I'm trying hard to guess about others (deaths, jobs), but it's really easiest to make up a cliffhanger with R&R and maybe J. As I said, I'm also afraid of the Bings announcing pregnancy or break up. I've got some ideas / wishes for season 9, but they wouldn't qualify as cliffhangers.

the creative abilities of BKC?

If there were only those three I'd panick. Luckily there're many more writers, i.e. ideas. I really hope for an unpredictable cliffhanger -- or none at all. That's what writers are for, knowing better about where to go with a story than the audience, otherwise we had R&R, M&C and J&P coupled after about 3 seasons, all happy and boring.

When watching TOW Chandler and Monica's Wedding I considered for a tiny moment, that it could be that not Monica is pregnant, but Rachel -- honestly, I swear, never had Phoebe in mind though. But then I decided, it would be too hard for the authors to write that in, as Rachel hadn't had a boyfriend known to the audience quite some time. Actually it seems as if Rachel had exactly one time sex in a year now (she dumped Tag in 714).

Not bad... and probably where the writing staff is headed. While I'd rather see something a bit more unpredictable and less cliched, this could be great if done right.

I still like the idea that Ross and Rachel are still married, and have been since their Vegas excursion, through a legal technicality in their divorce papers. That would throw in a ton of complications for the Joey/Rachel relationship, since Ross will now have to contend once again with the dreaded third divorce. It will also solve the problem the networks have historically had with babies being born out of wedlock.

Dan

Christoph PäperDavid Buehrle

"David Buehrle":

How about the following:

818-821: Ross solves a crossword puzzle surprisingly with Rachel's help. 822/823: The baby is born. (IMHO only Ross should be around.) 824: Rachel had send in the trivia and won a trip to, say, Hawaii for two. They're now wondering who'll go on that trip: Ross and Rachel both took part in solving the trivia, but there's the baby and they're not sure to take it on a long flight (although the trip may be scheduled later) and they remember that whenever they're flying somewhere something's happening (Rachel finds out & Ross meets Julie, Ross' wedding, Ross' honeymoon, Las Vegas), so they're not sure they should do the trip together or instead give it to two of the friends, but whom. The episode / season ends either with a) everybody and the baby at the airport, you can't say who's going, as everyone carries a bit of the luggage (well, if there's one of those ugly, colorful diapers boxes, you could of course tell at least one person going). b) (stolen from The Nanny, thus not really an option:) Ross & Rachel are on the plane where are turbulences, resulting in a declaration of love from either one. (Ross: "Let's never have a break again." Rachel: "Yes, if the plane doesn't have a break.")

or

824: When registering the baby's name (you have to do that in the US too, don't you?) Rachel finds out that a) they (R&R) are still married (*I* won't believe that story.) or b) her last name is still Geller, due to an error of Ross' divorce lawyer (little more believable). Thus they live together, have a kid together, share the same name -- only love & sex is missing for a marriage... For cynics (i.e. Chandler) this non-marriage is just as good as most real marriages.

I have one too: Rachel and Ross got into an argument about some silly little thing - because, lets face it, they always do - so she takes off to go over to Joey's or M&C's place, when suddenly she gets her contractions (is that the way you describe that??), so the others rush her to the hospital, unbeknownst to Ross. So, after they got to the hospital, they call up Ross, who immediately rushes out of his apartment, just to run into Emily, who was about to knock on his door. We see them looking at each other and then there's this little darn screen saying "to be continued"

Whaddaya think?

I've always thought Emily was Ross' best girlfriend, really hope she returns... My idea for Ross' Series finale would be him realizing how messed up his life is, with the 3 divorces and the 2 kids both from women who he once used to go out with but is not involved with anymore, so he decides to emigrate to some other country - he might even be offered a job at an English university... Anything really, just so he can get back with Emily. I have been watching my S2 DVDs over the last few days and I've come to realize that the one reason a lot of R&R fans quote why these two should end up together, might actually be the reason why they shouldnt: their history. I mean if you look at episodes like "TOW Ross & Rachel, you know" or "TOW Dr. Ramoray dies", there - at least to me - doesnt seem to be any believable way that these two could take in order to become the happy couple they once were again.

They haven't for quite some time. I'm truely awaiting the next quarrel.

Hm, unpredictable yes, but I think Ross is completely over her since 520 "The One with the Ride-Along" [1]. I never liked her anyway, as less as Tag. This for me wouldn't make it a real cliffhanger, because I were sure, Ross would almost ignore her to get to Rachel as quick as possible. After all his two kids (and his friends) are way more important to him than one ex-girlfriend that (re-)treated him so badly. I just wouldn't believe anything else till autumn.

[1] It's even as unbelievable as a return of Janice or Richard etc., they're all just done. Although I'm frightened Mona isn't yet, hopefully tonight.

Ross may be a jerk, but he's not the guy who runs away, especially not from his kids. The job thing could also hit Joey, Rachel and Chandler, less likely Phoebe and I think Monica's prime aim is kids not a restaurant of her own now.

Um, their history is the thing that hinders them from getting back together. The reason for their history, i.e. their feelings, is the thing to get them together again, if there's any such thing at all.

They won't be ever again *that* happy couple, that doesn't mean they won't ever become *a* happy couple again. I'm not saying they will, but they could.

If you watch (the first seasons of) Ally McBeal you have to wonder why they never tried to get help from a professional, because it seems (in AMB) like all couples with troubles [2] in the US do so - this is why I included it into my fanfic with Calista Flockhart guest starring as Dr. Elaine Thomas.

You make a good point. Ross did say, "I uh, went to a bar. And then I just uh, just walked around for a while." Apparently he walked around with Janice.

But Janice comes in after just a few moments and she says, "Ross you left you scarf in." indicating that she must have given him a ride and he left the scarf in the car. So, they didn't just walk.

Then, later Janice says, "Uh-oh-okay, oh-okay. I know what you all are thinking. But Chandler is in Yemen! I'm a young woman! I have needs! I can't wait forever!" What needs are being fulfilled by Ross? Maybe just companionship. But I think the friends, or at least Phoebe, indicate they are thinking that the two got physical.

(Janice leaves.) Ross: Okay, look, I-I know what you guys are going to say.

Phoebe: You two will have very hairy children.

Ross: Okay, I didn't know you would say that.

You don't have children by just walking around. Still, she might be talking about the future. So, it could go either way. I just think the intention was to indicate that they probably did the horizontal waltz. (Some might say "horizontal mambo", but I picture Ross as more of a one-two-three kinda guy.)

Engineers must be the ones who came up with those half-sized Coca-cola cans. I can usually drink a whole can, but I also know many who only need (or want) a half of a can. For them, indeed, the glass is twice as big as it needs to be.

Andre, let's examine all these "reunions."

1. Rachel comes on to Ross at the beach and convinces him to break up with Bonnie. As soon as he does so, she gives him a Grovel And Eat Dirt Letter which he is unable to accept. That is the time he broke up while in bed with somebody.

2. Rachel comes on to Ross while he's trying to save his marriage to Emily. He gently reminds her that he can't do this. As soon as he's free, Rachel's feelings vanish. Would you call this a time when they really became a couple again? Or did she fail to give it a real shot?

3. Rachel asks Ross to marry her while both are very drunk. The morning after, she demands a divorce he does not want to give her - and she wants him to expend all the energy necessary to make it happen while she goes her merry way. Would you call this a time when they really became a couple again? Or did she fail to give it a real shot?

4. Rachel propositions Ross when she's angry at Monica. He is willing to accomodate her, but she is just using him. Would you call this a time when they really became a couple again? Or did she fail to give it a real shot?

About these 97 times Ross and Rachel tried to work it out... did she actually try at all? Might it be that the difference will have to be that she decides he's worth trying to work through the problems with? Ross was right about one thing during the breakup - she's the one who runs, and bails, and refuses to try to grasp for happiness.

umm... you really dont like Rachel, do you? ;-) I think you're misunderstanding me, or I wasnt being clear enough. I agree with you on all the points you've mentioned above, my point merely was that these two seem to hook up every now and then (it used to be whenever Ross was involved with another woman that Rachel would go after him again, as you're certainly very aware of... *g*) but as quick at these "get-back-togethers" (to me, none of them "qualified" as a real re-union) happened, they were over even faster. So I just dont know how a proper reunion would have to look like in order to be believable. If it happens because of something to do with the baby, I'd feel like this was the only reason this baby storyline ever happened. On the other hand I think they should have either gotten R&R together for good in S6 or drop this story arc... I hope I made my point a little clearer with this

It always takes two. She's proven to be the more active part, so what? What would she do / have done if Ross came on to her?

And although she matured a lot the past nearly 8 years, she's not yet reached the point to have a long-lasting relationship she wants in "TOW They All Turn Thirty". Especially none with Ross. I think she needs professional or at least external help, or they do for that matter.

Actually it's the writers one should condemn, but then again they had to do it as it's unwritten sitcom law that a) supporting cast can't become main cast by marriage or the like and b) the audience always needs glimmers of hope, give it to them and they'll keep watching.

I think at least for Rachel the beach story was a real reunion.

We all might agree that there must not be another women for Ross. I'm not sure a man for Rachel would do.

Me too, but if it's because Rachel matures after becoming a mother and not only "Hey, I've got a kid with that guy, why not marry him?" I'm okay with it. She already avoided the latter when Ross so foolishly proposed to her.

Hm, yes, right after "TOW Rachel's Sister" / "TOW Chandler Can't Cry" maybe, but the authors surely were aware that the show wouldn't survive another whole season with two couples out of 6 friends and thus threw in a premature midlife crisis for Ross and Bruce Willis. Later they almost completely ignored them in season 7 in favor of Chandler and Monica.

I think the happiest ending for Ross is to meet someone totally new, get married, stay in City and be father to his kids as much as possible while starting his own family. The ideal of having all his kids under same house with wife/mother is already impossible. Eventually, Rachel will marry someone else and Ross will have to live with not being the main father figure for that child. That's sad, but there's no perfect ending. The closest would be to get a start fresh and have his own new family. Too much water under the bridge for R&R. It's just too icky now, to use a technical term. I don't know if that's what they'll do, but that seems to me like most realistic happy Ross ending.

and me living together, having a baby and all. I mean it's not
even our whole
history, let's forget about that for now, it's just, I mean,
it's like
we're stuck together, whenever one of us finds someone they'll
have to
        deal with that whole situation.
Rachel: That's actually a good idea.
Ross: Huh?
Rachel: To forget about our history.
Ross: What do you mean?
Rachel: What if nothing, and I mean nothing, had ever happened between
us?

As long as I'm not paid for it I'm not writing this any further.

"NARAG":

They definetly have to have a talk and I'm sure if there wasn't the whole Joey story taking up almost all 21 minutes, that show one day out of about two weeks, we'd have already seen a talk like this:

Set: Ross & Rachel's living-room, Rachel's there, Ross comes in with letters in his hand.

Rachel: Hi!
Ross: Hey.
Rachel: Is there any mail for me?
Ross: Yeah. (hands her some letters) Do you want this "You could
already have won one million dollars" addressed to Mr. & Mrs.
        Geller, too?
Rachel: Do you still get those?
Ross: Yeah, always since that Las Vegas story. I don't know where
these firms get the addresses from, but once they have one,
        they won't change it.
(sits down on the couch, to open the other letters) *sigh*.
Rachel: What's up?
Ross: I just wondered about something Mona said.
Rachel: What did she say?
Ross: Well, somehow she's right about it. It's all so weird... You
and me living together, having a baby and all. I mean it's not
even our whole history, let's forget about that for now, it's
just, I mean, it's like we're stuck together, whenever one of
us finds someone they'll have to deal with that whole situation.
Rachel: That's actually a good idea.
Ross: Huh?
Rachel: To forget about our history.
Ross: What do you mean?
Rachel: What if nothing, and I mean nothing, had ever happened between
