Some of you may know this, others may not - I think it's fun so here we go: - There are five houses, each with another colour - In each house lives one person of a certain nationality - Every person has his favourite drink and chocolate and also has a pet - None of the five people drink the same as one of the others, nor do they eat the same chocolate or have the same pet
Notes: All five houses are in a row. For you international folks it might be useful to know that Milka, Rittersport, Alpia, Kinderschokolade and Lindt are all German sorts/labels/whatever of chocolate.
The hints: - The Brit lives in the red house - The Swede has a dog - The Dane drinks tea - The purple house is on the left of the white house - The person living in the purple house drinks coffee - The person eating Rittersport has a bird - The man living in the middle house drinks milk - The owner of the yellow house eats Milka - The Norwegian lives in the first house - The person who eats Alpia lives next to the one who has a cat - The one who has a horse lives next to the one who eats Milka - The one who eats Lindt chocolate also likes to drink beer - The Norwegian lives next to the blue house - The Irish man eats Kinderschokolade - The one who eats Alpia lives next to the one who drinks water
So now, who owns the fish? Einstein came up with this, saying 98% of the world's population couldn't do it, took me about half an hour to figure it out. Once you've figured it out, try to explain how you got your result to someone :)

nah, the colours are all easy to figure out. I just don't remember how I concluded where the dane and the swede live. It worked out right in the end though :)
well kinda you know that the 3rd or 4th is purple and then if its the 3rd then the 4th is white and if not its 5th, but you can establish that the 3rd drinks milk therefore cannot be purple cos purple is coffee therefore it has to be the last 2
Nope, because you already know that house 3 drinks Milk (middle house drinks milk hint). Therefor the only two adjacent houses that can be purple/white are 4 and 5.

ok...why do we need this last hint? It's not needed to figure out the color sequence (we don't even need to know that the five favourite drinks are different)...then, we get this diagram:

We know that the one who eats Lindt chocolate drinks beer, so it can't be the Brit or the Dane. It can't be the Norwegian nor the Irish either, so it's the Swede. Since the Swede has a dog and drinks beer, he can't live in the blue house or the purple one, so he lives in the white one. We straightforwardly get this:

without using the last hint. So (assuming I'm right), why did Einstein put it there?
The Irishman. Wasnt quite as fast as wee jock, but got there in the end. But yeah, you start out with the independant facts, e.g.: The norwegian lives in the first house, and work your way from there. Good puzzle this.
For those interested, I made a little text file describing every step. Helps to make a little table in word so you can keep track of all the properties.
1. The Norwegian lives in the first house. 2. The Norwegian lives next to the blue house, therefor house 2 is blue 3. The man in the middle house drinks milk, therefor the owner of house 3 drinks milk 4. The purple house is to the left of the white house, which means that (because house 2 is blue, and we need room for 2 adjacent houses), purple/white can only be houses 3/4 or 4/5. However 3/4 is not possible, because the owner of house 3 drinks milk and the owner of the purple house drinks coffee. Therefor House 4 must be purple, and house 5 must be white. 5. Now the only house colours that are unkown are house 1 and 3. However, seeing as the Brit lives in the red house, and the norwegian already occupies house 1, the only house the brit can live in is house 3. Therefor house 3 is red and the occupant is a brit. That makes house 1 yellow (the only remaining colour). 6. Because house 1 is yellow, we know that the owner of house 1 eats milka. We also know that the person living next to the owner who eats milka owns a horse. Seeing as house 1 only has one adjacent house, the owner of house 2 must own a horse. 7. The owner who eats Alpia lives next to the one who drinks water, which rules house 5 out because house 5 only has one adjacent house (4), and we've already established the owner of house 4 drinks coffee, not water. That leaves house 1 and 2. Weve established that the owner of house 2 owns a horse, and if the owner who eats alpia also lives next door to the person who owns a cat, house 1 is ruled out (because house 2 cant have a cat, it already has a horse). Therefor the owner of house 2 eats Alpia, and that in turn means the owner of house 1 drinks water and owns a cat. 8.The one who eats Lindt Chocolate also likes beer. The only house where both drink and chocolate are unkown is house 5, so the owner of house 5 eats Lindt and likes beer. 9.The Dane drinks tea. House 2 is the only house left where drink is unkown, so the owner of house 2 is a Dane and he drinks tea. 10. The Irish man eats kinderchocolade. Only house where both nationality and chocolate are unkown is house 4. So the owner of house 4 is the irishman, and he eats kinderchocolade. 11. The Swede has a dog. Only house where both nationality are unkown is house 5. Owner of house 5 is therefore a swede, and he has a dog. 12. The one who eats rittersport also has a bird. Only house where chocolate and pet are unkown is house 3. So the house 3 chocolate is rittersport and the house 3 pet is a bird.
Ergo, the unly unkown in the equation is the pet belonging to house 4. This must be the fish. House 4 is occupied by the irishman. So the Irishman owns the fish!
