The point is usenet's "matured" and now nobodys willing to obey the rules, and those that don't actually break them still say "besides its only 35k" as if it makes a difference. If the people not doing the rule breaking actually supported the people trying to keep some order things would probably be slightly better.

Internet services are designed for people with certain equipment. Full screen video feeds aren't designed for people with dialup connections. Usenet was not designed to be anything more than a text medium. Extensions have led to binary postings, which sensibly, TPTB decided should be largely restricted to specific groups, almost certainly with the view that people reading text groups had varied connection speeds. Some people are metered, at a very high cost, and one 35k binary IS going to make a difference to the time i'm connected by several seconds on a good day. It takes a fair time to write 35k of text and even then hardware compression will often push it through faster. It can't do that for binaries.

Its a valid problem, there are rules, they're on MY side, not yours, so stop talking to me like i'm the one thats wrong.

I'm not bitching i'm trying to uphold some order in the newsgroup. In theory everyone should be with me on this, but I can't force you to agree. There have been occasions where several Mb binaries have appeared in here and people were far more supportive. I just want people to acknowledge that there are some with a fair expectation that a news sync will take say, 3-6 minutes, and that even 35k can add several seconds. You might think in moderation its fine, but when that becomes the case, volume of such posts increases, and suddenly everything is taking much longer.

Although my ISP(s) do filter out these unwarranted binaries, it's as intrusive, against the group's charter, and rude as spam, trolling and irrelevant cross-posting, and no-one says "why are you the only one complaining" for those kinds of posts. Ignorance might be supposed to be bliss, but a lot of people should wise up.

Ignorant isn't a swear word, it's a perfectly valid word that describes the state of "not knowing"...

To my mind, not knowing the group even has a charter, let alone what it says, not reading the FAQ or looking for one, and posting things that are not wanted/allowed in the group is a pretty ignorant thing to do, and shows that that person should spend a bit more time learning to use Newsgroups/Usenet/the whole Net shebang.

You don't get your driving licence one day and drive a Porsche at 90mph the next day, do you? You potter around the local neighbourhood, only making easy turns, and never going above 30mph, until you get the hang of it. Usenet is like that. Learn to use it, figure out the rules of the road, then you won't wind up wrapped around a metaphorical tree.

Simply post a URL. Free web space is readily available, and most of the time it'll be to a file you've already taken from a URL anyway. I believe IE and Netscape have "Copy Shortcut" right click options.

That's the fault of non-education of newbies and to an extent the developers inability to put in simple warnings like "Binary posts may not be suitable for this newsgroup". Thankfully this whole scenario doesn't arise much, since usenet still has a majority of established knowledgeable users, much like IRC. Few people challenged in their computer literacy have what it takes to set up a newsreader.

ATF is NOT a binary group. A binaries group does exist for Friends, and no "it's just once" excuses are acceptable.

Luckily for me both my ISPs filter out binaries in non-binary groups, but I can see how this is immensely irritating for you.
