Okay, we're voting for "The Best and Worst of Friends" Awards (also known as the First Annual Friendsie Awards). These awards are voted on by the Academy of Alt.tv.friends. Basically, all ya need to do, is send the completed ballot, to [email]. Once we do Season One, we'll do all the other seasons in order. The point of the Friendsies is to figure out which episodes the average person liked and hated on Friends. Here we go:

No it isn't. The episode has no title at all, Warner Brothers just refer to it as the pilot, and anything else is a matter of personal preference. Danny's title is as good as any other, except it's the one adopted by epguides.com and the official transcripts - mainly because it sounds like a title given at the time the episode went out, rather than a retrospective once the show became a success.

Yes 101 was originally just written as the pilot (in fact you've got to question if it even had a number at that point) but after TOW They All Talk About That Episode At The Water Cooler format was developed it was given an official name (possibly after editing for TV). The name has been used by Warner Brothers themselves and is labelled thus on the video and in TV listings.

Just thought you might like an update on Season One voting so far!!!

Currently: -Three people have placed their votes. -There is a three-way tie between TOW The Ick Factor, TOW The Blackout, and TOW The Stoned Guy for best episode of Season One. -There is a two-way tie between TOW The Evil Orthodontist and TOWhere Nana Dies Twice for worst episode. -In the most forgettable episode category, TOW George Stephanopolous and TOW Nana Dies Twice are tied for first. -TOW Rachel Finds Out is in the lead for most unforgettable episode, closely followed by TOW the Boobies. -TOW The Birth is currenty the champ in most emotional episode, followed by TOW Two Parts Part Two. -TOW Underdog Gets Away, TOW The Blackout, and TOW The Boobies are tied for funniest episode. -Matthew Perry is so far the unanimous choice for best actor, while Jennifer Aniston is just a bit ahead of Lisa Kudrow for best actress. -Matt LeBlanc has two votes for worst actor, making him the unanimous choice so far, while Lisa Kudrow and Courteney Cox are tied for the "honor" of worst actress. -Chandler Bing and Ross Geller are tied for best-written character, while Joey Tribbiani is again, the unanimous choice for worst-written character. -Maggie Wheeler as Janice is the best guest character/guest star so far, and ??? as Paul the Wine Guy and ??? as Nana are tied for worst guest star. -In the open-ended category competition, Matt LeBlanc is the best-dressed male, and Jennifer Aniston is the best-dressed female.

These results are not final! The voting booth closes at midnight (eastern standard time), Saturday, January 20, 2001, and results will be made public at a grand ceremony the next day. But the program content belongs to Warner Bros Television, and the artistic decisions are made by Bright-Kaufmann-Crane.

It was just a pilot, if anything its title was "Friends". But if we are going to invent an episode title for it, then "The One Where Monica Gets A New Roommate" is at least consistent with what the title might actually have been, whereas "The One Where It All Began" is a retrospective title, like naming a baby "My grandfather when he was born".

And yet there is still confusion.

Looking back, the title "The One Where It All Began" is fitting, but when you watch it for the first time it is a little weird. So I get your point on that. "The One Where Monica Gets A New Roommate" doesn't really work either, because it's the pilot-episode and you still have to meet all the characters. "Pilot" could be a name for any new sitcom and "Friends" is already the name of the show, so they don't work either. "Let's meet the gang", "Here's where it starts" or "Bride on the loose" would have been good alternatives. Oh what the hell....what's done is done.

And of course when the show began, Monica was the familiar face, since only Courteney Cox was famous. Furthermore Monica was central to both of the stories, Ross & Rachel featured in only one of those stories, and Joey, Chandler & Phoebe were merely peripheral characters.

I rather like the "The One With the Wet Bride" though.
