thinking back. it's sort of illogical that rachel and monica hadn't talked or seen each other for such a long time and all of a sudden she's living with monica and they become best friends.

Well, the first point is, that they have been best friends before, so that would mean that they became best friends AGAIN.
Second point is, that Rachel didn't really talk about the moving in with Monica, it just kinda happened. - Ok, it is illogical, but as your example proofs it doesn't bother you that much the first time you see it. (I'm sure I left tons of stuff out or got it wrong, but someone will correct me for sure)

Not really. My best friend since 1st grade and I have lost touch mainly because I have been extremely ill for the past 3 years and she has been ill for the past 5 years. We just don't have energy to get together like we used to and she lives in Washington and I live in California. Yet, if we met up again in a situation like Rachel and Monica I'd invite her to live with me in a second.
