For all Americans who have been looking to be able to buy each season of
FRIENDS. I just found out about VCD's (some of you may already know what I
am going to say). If you have a DVD player you maybe able to play VCD's on
them. But before you order your VCD's If I were you I would check your DVD
player to see if they are compatable. If you go to www.zoommovies.com you
can order every episode from every season of FRIENDS. But not season 8 yet,
Duh!! I hope this helps some of you who have been looking for every season
and if it didn't then I'm sorry. But keep looking for the DVD's in the US!!
:) Well, I now know what I want for Christmas. I have just ordered season
seven (12 VCD's which each hold 3 episodes and for $59.99 for all). Well,

Before buying VCD's, you may also want to check your DVD player, just in case you discover it can become a multi-region player. I recently found out my portable DVD player can become a multi-region player after entering a code, and now I have all 7 seasons of Friends on DVD, shipped from England, which play beautifully. http://www.dvd.reviewer.co.uk/ is a good site to check, they have lists of DVD players which have the ability to become code free. Not that I'm advocating hacking into your DVD player, but it's an option available to some who don't want to buy VCD's (which are more expensive than the DVD's).

Since just about every model of every particular DVD player has a different hack that turns it into multi-region, it makes things slightly more difficult. There is not one code that will turn any Region 1 DVD player (which Americans use) into a multi-region player. Instead, you have to search out your particular model (such as mine, the Aiwa DVD-DW5 or the Sony DreamSystem, etc.), and if in fact a code is known for that model, then you can use it to transform your player into multi-region. Many models, although they must have a code, are not known (I have not seen any codes for Sony DVD players). Depending on what you are willing to sacrifice for the benefit of being able to order all of the seasons of Friends on DVD, there are many cheap(er) DVD players to be found in America that have known codes. To find some of these, either go to the site I posted earlier (http://www.dvd.reviewer.co.uk/info/multiregion/default.asp), try this site - http://www.dvd365.net/?hacks.htm , or type "multi-region dvd" into any search engine. Another option is to visit the rec.video.dvd.tech newsgroup, where many people post similar queries about how to make their DVD player multi-region. Hope that helps! Good luck!

1) A VCD is a Video Compact Disc that contains video and audio. It is capable of holding up to 74 minutes of full-motion video with sound. VCD's use MPEG-1 standard to store video and audio in a high density form, as opposed to DVD's, which use MPEG-2. MPEG-1 is a standards independent format used worldwide, therefore it is not restricted to specific region codes. VCDs will play on a variety of platforms, including computers, DVD players, VCD players, and game systems (such as Playstation 2). 2) Region codes are particular to a geographic location. For example, European DVD players are built to play Region 2 DVDs (which are sold in Europe), whereas North American DVD players play Region 1 DVDs. Region 1 DVD players will not play Region 2 DVDs unless you use a code that will make them multi-region. Multi-region simply means that the DVD player will play DVDs from any region, meaning you can play DVDs from all over the world. If you live in America, this is the only way to play entire seasons of Friends on DVD, which you must order from Europe, since that is the only place they are sold at the moment. Code-free means the DVD player has been constructed to already play DVDs from all over the world, and no code is needed to break through the restriction.
3) Yes, there are Friends DVDs sold in America, but not entire seasons. We can only buy the Best of Friends Volume Sets, of which there are 4, with 5 episodes on each, bringing us to a total of 20 Friends episodes on DVD. In Europe, entire seasons of Friends are sold on DVD (Season 1, Season 2, etc.). This means that, essentially, you could own every single episode of Friends ever made, with the exception of Season 8, which has not yet been released on DVD there. Since I have entered a code to make my DVD player multi-region, meaning it will play DVDs from anywhere in the world, I have been able to order all of the seasons of Friends on DVD from England, have them shipped here, and watch them whenever I want. Unless you have entered the specific code for your DVD player that will make it multi-region, or unless you already own a DVD player that has been built code-free, DVDs from Europe will not play on an American-made DVD player, instead, you will receive a message to the effect of "Code Violation - DVD cannot play."

Yes I know, many people in Britain have multi-region players, and we get all the latest Hollywood movies, often before they go on sale in the USA, although the best versions may well come from Canada, Australia or here.
So far, the Region 1 "Friends" DVDs have merely been best-of collections, and although most are extended versions, they are *not* uncut; and a show like "Friends" has long-running stories that demand the complete seasons that we enjoy on Region 2 DVDs. The good news is you can buy them too.

Well, I have no idea what you are talking about, so my initial reaction to your example ("thank God!") might not be valid.
Some scenes, Tenant, may just be cut because *they don't work*, not just because there is not enough room for them.
Obviously the DVD's aren't as valuable if there aren't extras, and in the case of Friends it just about has to be extra scenes because the cast interviews and behind the scenes info on Volumes 1 and 2 frankly sucked. So of course the more additional scenes there are, the better.
But I want quality as well as quantity, and frankly the one scene you say was added I am not much enamored of. I can see why they cut it for the broadcast version. I'm not sure I understand why they filmed it in the first place, and maybe someone on the show wondered the same thing.
I will admit that in the episode you mentioned, I am left wondering what other scenes might have been added in (I'm taking your word that was the only one missing from the broadcast version in the US) but weren't. That is disappointing.

Our DVDs have both the broadcast version, and an extended version, so if you don't like the extra scenes, you don't have to watch them. Personally, I'd rather have everything available, and then I'll make my own mind up.
As for the scene which started this conversation (Ross & Phoebe playing a bagpipe/guitar duet in Central Perk) those people who saw it liked it.
