Did anybody else get the feeling they don't really like David Schwimmer? I might be exaggarating, but it looks like he's the least liked person there.

Mmmhm.

Coffee MugMayalt.tv.friends

Well, he certainly was the most quiet one. But that doesn't mean anything. If you mean to say that they didn't kiss his ass as much (excuse me), then yeah, you're right.

Another thing about the interview, at a certain moment Matthew Perry tells us that Jennifer had gone through a tough time. What was that about? I can't remember anything "being publicized" about that.

MayCoffee Mugalt.tv.friends

Yeah. Especially, btw, to Courteney. But I don't think it was ass kissing... It's not a coincidence that similar comments were made to each person, apparently they really are so. But to DS they were either not saying much at all, or talking about the negotiation (for the salary). Mmmk.

can't

Yeah. I guess we don't know everything. ;)

KathyMayalt.tv.friends

I think that's just his way. They all had very good things to say about him. I think he and Lisa are the quiet ones, but they are both still a valid part of the group.Yea, Jennifer did the majority of the talking, but that's just her way, too. Matthew P. was, as usual, funny as hell. Matt L. was also very cute. ~~~ Kathy

I didn't think anyone was really lying about how friendly the cast was with each other. I didn't get the impression that there was bad blood on between anyone. But clearly, some cast members are closer to each other than others such as JA and CC. what do you think? H

No, I didn't get that impression at all. For a little while, I was wondering whether they didn't like Lisa Kudrow, because when they were all answering Oprah's "Who's the most likely to _____" questions, *no one* answered "Lisa" for any of them, and she seemed a little distant during that portion of the program. But when they took turns commenting on one another, it became clear that they're fond of her.

yeah i was thinking that too. I mean it's probably not that they don't LIKE him, he's just probably the least liked, as u said. Also, he didn't say much and seemed very shy. So maybe that's it. But i went to the taping of TOW soap opera last year and i noticed that they were all friendly except david, who i assumed was in a bad mood. but maybe it wasn't a bad mood after all. I also got the feeling from the oprah interview that david didn't want to be there. Like he was too good for them or something. But jennifer said that her favorite friends moment was RnR's first kiss, so i don't think it would be her fav moment if she didn't like david. So to sum up....i have no idea.

Mayhotmamasitaalt.tv.friends

Now that you mention it - It's probably shyness. He didn't look arrogant at all, he just looked incredibly unresponsive. It fits him to be shy, so that *could* be it.

When I went to a taping last year (820 TOW the Baby Shower), David was the only one who didn't acknowledge the audience by waving, smiling etc. Matthew Perry was by far the friendliest one (no pun intended). He came over to the audience and talked to us, and he was also the one who spent his breaks together with the rest of the cast. He didn't have any scenes together with the girls, but he kept walking over to them during breaks, hugging them, talking to them etc. The others smiled and waved to the audience as well.

Maybe David doesn't want to do it because he's shy. That seems like the most reasonable explanation. For instance, he seemed very shy and modest in the "Revealed" interview earlier this year.

nah. Especially Jennifer Aniston and Courteney Cox seemed very fond of him. The thing about interviews with all of them is that David Schwimmer usually is very quiet, if you look at "The stuff you've never seen" it was very much like this Oprah thing. He seems like a very reserved guy. Maybe he's still bitter about the Friends backlash thing or that he, the big hero when it all started, now wound up with the dumbest plotlines and probably the least liked character :(

Least liked character? I don't agree with you here. Chandler is by far the most dull character ever since season 7!

That's not my opinion, that's many people's opinion. One reason why the Joey & Rachel thing was so successful is that people just don't like Ross and this extremely geeky way he is presented.

calm down woman... I'm not advocating J+R or R+R here, I'm leaving that to the teens. It's just a simple fact that the J+R storyline was a major boost for the show's popularity in S8, the only time Friends has ever been the most successful program in its timeslot (cue Dan Ginsburg who corrects my awful memory). Even the blindest R+R fans cannot deny this. What I'm saying is J+R brought in a lot of money and praise (two Emmys), so consequently it was successful

(why did mamasita's post never show up at my end?)

How can I say what? That Friends received two Emmys for S8? Well... errmm... Because I saw them receive the Emmys?! Where did I get that information? On TV! Well, to be honest I got it off the internet, I would have liked a video of that Emmy show though, since Conan O'Brien hosted it. As for the show being the most successful in S8, I got that information from Dan Ginsburg, who's pretty much the king of ratings information. You give him a number and he'll tell you the episode that got thar many viewers - at least that's how I'd imagine it.

fuck analysis, that was you playing spin doctor with the numbers. You ignored outside factors playing into the lowly ratings for 818, but when a J+R episode in S9 got the lowest ratings ever all of a sudden they were the sole reason for the episode doing so poorly

you know... there isn't a part of that sentence that I don't need explained?! http://fear.mybigmouth.com

In article , cookie dude wrote:

That's UNTRUE, Andr - and if you were listening to me, you'd know it.

I did *not* ignore outside factors about 818, I denied false claims.

Fans claimed that 818 did poorly because people were away for Spring Break - and yet rival TV shows did *not* suffer, only "Friends" did.

On the other hand, the J+R episode with a low rating (it is UNTRUE to say that it was the lowest rating ever, Season 7 often did far worse) was 919, aired in a week when *all* the channels got low ratings, and indeed "Survivor" plunged from 7th to 15th place - however, what you call a poor episode of "Friends" was the SECOND HIGHEST rated show.

On both occasions I examined the figures in their context.

Maybe only people who watch Friends go away for Spring Break, whereas people who watch Survivor are couch potatoes who never leave the house anyway? What you did do though, was to insist that ratings were poor because the episode was heavily promoted as R+R. When I pointed out that a heavily promoted J+R episode in S9 got ratings below 20m, all of a sudden promos weren't that important anymore, it was because the episode the week before was so bad. You're twisting things around to suit your POV. As I see you've chosen to not reply to any of the posts in the S10-08 thread regarding your bias yet?

There were still millions of other people watching TV that night and NBC beat everybody over the head with the promos of J+R kissing (or not so much) - why did they choose to watch something else?

You'll gladly blame an R+R plot for an episode's poor ratings, but when they're not available as the reason it was everybody elses fault, except for anyone to do with Friends. This routine is getting stupid.

Tennant Stuart wrote in message news:...

i just went to dan's site, which i must say was pretty impressive. Thanks Dan for keeping track of all this stuff! But anyway, onto the ratings discussion:

u said in season 8, the ratings soared when joey fell for rachel. Well i would EXPECT ratings to increase with new and exciting storylines, so of course viewers would be intrigued. (Just as everyone was fond of the mondler romance when it first came out. But lots of people quickly grew tired of them.) But according to dan's website, this isn't what happened. Yes the ratings are higher than the previous episode, but the first part of the season was ALREADY at 29-30 million b/c of the rachel pregnancy/who's the daddy thing. So if the season had already gotten big numbers, how did the ratings SOAR for the joey/rachel storyline? 08-01 The One After "I Do" 31.70 million. 08-02 The One with the Red Sweater 30.04 million 08-03 The One Where Rachel Tells 29.20 million 08-12 The One Where Joey Dates Rachel 25.53 million--joey's feelings are introduced 08-13 The One Where Chandler Takes a Bath 29.24 million--this is the episode u're talking about right? 08-14 The One with the Secret Closet 28.64 million ---ratings start going down 08-15 The One with the Birthing Video 28.64 million 08-16 The One Where Joey Tells Rachel 27.52 million--decreasing again

In season 9, ratings really went down starting w/ 09-19 The One with Rachel's Dream (if you recall, this episode was advertised a good amount i would say, and the ads all showed rachel and joey kissing. they really hyped it up) 18.25 million which is the lowest of the entire season. From then until the end of the season, the shows were the lowest of that season (19, 19, 20 million) until the finale. And finales always do better than regular episodes. But this finale did poorly compared to other finales: 09-23-09-24 The One in Barbados (joey and rachel episode) 25.46 million, compared to 08-23-08-24 The One Where Rachel Has a Baby (undoubtably a ross and rachel episode) 34.91 million. And for premiers, 10-01 The One After Joey & Rachel Kiss (joey/rachel focus) 24.54 million as compared with the previous season premier 09-01 The One Where No One Proposes (ross goes to rachel's room with flowers to ask her to start things up again) 34.01 million!! You said that when rachel pretended to be married to ross the ratings crashed. Do u mean 08-18 The One in Massapequa? Because it got 22.05 million. Remember how much the joey/rachel episodes at the end of season 9 got? 19-20 million.

So aside from the emmy (which they didn't win b/c of the joey/rachel storyline, rather they won because the show was funny and loooon overdue for a win. Plus season 8 was the season they bounced back after some would call the "slump" of season 7 and showed that they still had a lot of good stuff left), there really is no proof that the joey/rachel storyline had the affect you say it did. In fact, i think the opposite. But hey, that's just my opinion, and we're all entitled to our opinions.

err... I could, I just don't care. Ask yourself this, when Friends got any media coverage outside of NBC over the last 1.5 years, what was it for? What were the cliffhangers for S8 and S9 about? Just open your mind a _little_ bit and you'll see it. Except for 812 I've never liked J+R, but I could have made my peace with it, had they chosen to go down that path. And from a neutral standpoint it is quite obvious that it was a very successful story in terms of getting people to watch and getting critical acclaim

cookie dude wrote in message news:...

oh it definitely got people to watch, as i said in my earlier post. Just like in season 5 when monica and chandler started dating. Almost anything new and big (in this case used successfully as a ratings stunt) would get people to watch. But after the initial introduction of the storyline, several people tired of it, and the ratings dropped. As for the media coverage...i don't remember that well, but i would assume it was mostly for JnR. But like i said, it was used to get people to watch. And since it lasted for so long (unfortunately, since it turned out to be a waste/dead end), it was a focus of that season. But you can't just say look at the media attention of the last 1.5 years, b/c RnR fans, MnC fans, etc... could all say "oh well, look at the media coverage for seasons 3-4 or for a certain amount of time." Every storyline that is the focus gets the most attention. But if you look at the show's history as a whole, the most media attention has been given to RnR. As for the finales, Season 9 was JnR, but season 8 was RnR (ross was going to rachel's room to ask her to start dating again, but joey had just accidentally proposed. So the question is what will happen with RnR?--whether or not they would still get together was the question, NOT whether or not rachel would marry joey. Anyone who actually thought joey and rachel would get married is a fool). Mind you, this finale had more viewers, if i recall correctly, than the season 9 finale.

hotmamasita wrote:

Which is all I'm saying... This is only about S8, at least from my side

Why? All I said was that J+R got a lot of media coverage in S8. Why is completely beyond me, but it did. Just as everything was about R+R in the early years.

Not what this is about though

That is your interpretation. All we know is Ross walked towards her room with a bunch of flowers. What he had intended to talk about that moment we'll never know. It is true that he wanted to talk to Rachel about dating again, but had it not been for Joey putting him on the spot he probably wouldn't have brought up the topic until they were back home, seeing as the whole hospital extravaganza was very exhausting for all of them

It was quite obvious that Joey wouldn't go through with this, but the questions were "why did Rachel say ok?" and "how would Ross react to this?" - just like the whole storyline until it's re-introduction in S9 was more about Joey and Ross than it was about anything else IMHO

IIRC Matrix II came out the same day as the S9 finale aired and something else was also going on - *DAN*?? Where are you when one actually needs you? :) (it was still a crap finale, so it deserved its low rating)

08-04 The One with the Videotape 25.58 million 08-05 The One with Rachel's Date 25.64 million 08-06 The One with the Halloween Party 26.96 million 08-07 The One with the Stain 24.24 million 08-08 The One with the Stripper 26.54 million 08-09 The One with the Rumor 24.24 million 08-10 The One with Monica's Boots 22.44 million--hitting a minimum here 08-11 The One with Ross's Step Forward 23.85 million

Yep, the ratings have gone up by a massive seven million since 08-10 as viewers tune in to see what happened after 08-12

They're still six million higher than the show was doing at 08-10

Yes, this is where the fall begins, after the J+R story ends - but you very conveniently omitted to mention that the ratings carried on diving with the introduction of R+R stories - note that there's a new minimum low for 08-18, when Rachel & Ross pretended to be married...

08-17 The One with the Tea Leaves 26.30 million 08-18 The One in Massapequa 22.05 million--hitting a new minimum here

RnR fans tried to explain this away, by claiming that people were away for Spring Break; and yet other TV shows didn't suffer, only "Friends".

08-19 The One with Joey's Interview 22.59 million 08-20 The One with the Baby Shower 22.24 million 08-21 The One with the Cooking Class (was 819) 23.97 million 08-22 The One Where Rachel is Late 24.32 million

Despite heavily being heavily promoted as an R+R episode, 08-22 still managed five million views LESS than the peak of the J+R story.

08-23/4 The One Where Rachel Has a Baby 34.91 million

Only for the finale do the ratings zoom back up again.

It was indeed, but what you have extremely conveniently omitted to mention is that the episode was the SECOND HIGHEST RATED SHOW - *all* the ratings were suffering badly during that period, not just "Friends".

And in any case, I was supporting Andr's post (which you scorned) where he was talking about S8, not S9.
