I was just watching the rerun of TOW Old Yeller this evening and I saw Tom Selleck playing Richard again. (Yes, this is sad, I've turned to the second season reruns for solace now.) All I could think of was how likeable and intelligently written a character he was. He was stable and wise and he was the only person who was better at sly zingers than Chandler was. He provided a really good foil to the rest of the group; his maturity contrasted their needy searching very well and it made for refreshing stories that were funny as well as believable.

He's coming back in the finale and the TV ads do indeed seem to indicate that he is going to stir up trouble after all. I am extremely sorry to say that I'm really beginning to look forward to this. Chandler and Monica have lost their dramatic edge, and it is very tempting to think that he could bring it back. If Monica ended up back with Richard again, they could have a substantial period of discomfort where Chandler has to try to cope with the situation. Understand this - I am *not* interested in watching insults and backstabbing (ala Ross and Rachel) for six months. Still, I'm afraid if we get a marriage proposal we are going to get stuck listening to six months of Monica screeching about wedding dresses, while Chandler tries to "maintain" her.

Look, I understand that it is *possible* for them to write a Chandler and Monica engagement that is funny and interesting, but I'm afraid, after watching them live together, that this particular group of people can't or won't do it. They may be too young, if most of them are in their twenties, to fully understand a mature and committed relationship, and you can't write it if you don't know it. Now, if Kauffman and Crane were writing more, I'd think the prognosis was better. Both are older. Crane is gay, but it doesn't really make a difference. They write more mature scripts. You can always tell when they've written because the conflicts are more involved, the resolution more real, and the characters come across more sympathetically even if they are doing something wrong.

I'm sorry I'm glad to see Richard again. I didn't really realize how much until this evening.

In a vaguely related anecdote, I discovered on Tuesday that one of my tutoring students was a Friends fan. I had used viewing statistics on TV shows as a way to explain graphs, and she was disappointed that we hadn't used the shows she wanted...

"We should have used Friends. That's a cool show. I like Ross."

You know, contrary to popular belief, I actually have nothing against Richard. I loved his relationship with Monica, and will willingly watch my tapes of those season 2 episodes (I like the second half more than the first half of that season, which proves this fact.)

And you know, I even liked Pete. I'm not against Richard coming back, I think it will be interesting to see the conflict he causes. And I will even put up with a major cliffhanger regarding the relationship with Monica and Chandler.. a whole "are they or are they not together?" scenario. What would piss me off is if the two break up for good. And that, won't happen until season 7, should it go ahead, and I have a feeling all the silence surrounding this question means that it will.

BOTOH, there are so many contradicting rumours about the finale circulating on the web right now. One paper says there will be some very serious problems in their relationship, and on E! Online they are dropping hints about marriage.

And I guess we should all feel pretty sure about the fact that there *will* be a season 7, right?

Anyway, I guess some of our questions will be answered when the spoilers for the finale are posted.

I'm curious... i what way, and what examples do you have of Chandler acting childish? I'm not sure I know where you're coming from here, since Chandler wasn't jealous of Richard's relationship with Monica. I do love the storyline in TOW Old Yeller Dies, where Chandler and Joey start hanging out with him, and then make the mistake of commenting on how much cooler he is than other dads. In that sense, sure, they were slightly immature, but I think considering the whole plot, it was an acceptable level. I'm not disagreeing with you by the way Ariel.. just curious :)

If that happens, I think half of the Mondlerians would be having some serious words with the writers/producers, due to their complete lack of creative writing skills, and good judgement. IDIOTS is a word that comes to mind should that happen.

OK, confession time. I missed the ad. I just heard that Richard was going to come back with a torch for Monica, and after watching TOW Old Yeller I realized that I missed him. You are the second person who has expressed apprehension to me since I started this thread, and in neither case was it heartbreak about C&M. What did I miss that has everybody so worried?

I didn't think it was old, her hair looked like it does now. It also showed a clip after that, of Monica looking at Chandler, I think she shrugged her shoulders or something like that (not like an oh well shrug, but an I don't know kind of shrug), and he looked upset. Just my take on it. It gave me chills.

I wish I would have recorded it now. But I just looked up Richard's line, and in TOW Barry and Mindy's Wedding, he does say "I want you, now," which is exactly what he said in the promo. Plus, Tom Selleck hasn't filmed any episodes this season yet!!! :)

I don't think I was paying *really* close attention, but basically they showed a few clips of upcoming episodes as they always do. One where Paul (Bruce Willis' character) and Ross and Elizabeth are out for dinner, and Ross says something (I forget what but it was about him dating Elizabeth), and Paul says "Are you yelling at me?" and Ross says "Oh God no." And another where Rachel and Paul are kissing or in some compromising position, and Ross walks in.

But the thing that the Mondlerians would be upset about is that they showed a couple clips about Chandler & Monica, one from TOW The Ring, where Chandler tells Joey and Ross that he's going to ask Monica to marry him, and Ross says "So you guys are really serious, huh?" And then the voiceover guy was like "But Richard's coming back..." (And I'm totally paraphrasing.) And then it showed an old clip of Richard saying to Monica, "I want you, now."

Oh, poo. Chill, everybody, at least until this weekend when the spoilers come out. This doesn't mean anything. NBC is notorious for misrepresenting the future episodes of sitcoms by choosing shocking clips and showing them out of context. If it is showing an *old* clip of Richard saying he wants Monica, we don't really have the foggiest idea what he's actually going to do now. For all we know, he may be around to show off his new trophy wife and make Monica jealous of the ring.
