. . . . one of the actresses had to deliver a joke that clearly made her uncomfortable, and also didn't go over well with the audience. Now that the episode has aired, could you tell us which line it was? If I had to guess, I might go with the "powder my ass" line, but I wouldn't bet on it. . . .

You're spot on. Since this was a joke that Courteney had to say twice (first in the teaser scene and then at the baby shower), it became really obvious just how weird this joke was. The first time we heard it, I noticed quite a few people in the audience who looked at each other as if to say "what did she say??" But when she had to say the "powder my ass" line, it became fairly obvious (IMO) that the joke should have been improved. Marlo Thomas kept messing up her lines, so they had to shoot the scene over and over again, so Courteney said the line at least five times until everything clicked. Ultimately, she looked up at the audience, rather uncomfortable, and said, "Okay, I'm going to say it one more time, people.."

Thanks, Marita--that was the one line that stood out to me as being sort of clunky and strange. I "got it," since Monica had the "my ass is sweating" line earlier, but it was a little off. I read your taping report, and it seems CCA's comment that she wasn't *really* powdering her butt must have been much more amusing than the actual line. :)
BTW, I'm guessing Tennant will have a small fit when Rachel's sisters are mentioned but we still don't learn the name of the second sister. What do you think?

Lol! I thought the exact same thing when I was in the studio. If Tennant had been there, I'm sure he would have gone down to David Crane and demanded to hear the name of the mysterious sister. :)

Why do you suppose that line bothered her so much? It certainly wasn't the first time she ever had to say the word "ass" on the show, and they've also made numerous jokes involving other body parts. Over the years I'm sure she had to say many things that were a lot worse than "I have to go powder my ass". I actually thought it was a funny line, because it was obviously meant to make fun of Monica's compulsivenss (who else would care about their ass sweating?)...

The point is that the line in 820 TOW The Baby Shower wasn't good, and Courteney seemed uncomfortable saying it because it was so out of place. I remember looking around at the other people in the audience right after seeing the first take of the teaser scene, and people looked at each other as if to say, "what did she say??" The audience's reaction was therefore rather odd. As for Courteney herself, I can only tell you what I saw, and I sat very close to the stage. She seemed uncomfortable to me.
