Ross and Monica have known each other since the younger (Monica?) was born.
Rachel lived in the neighborhood while they were growing up. Course, she and Monica drifted apart, probably when Monica went off to learn her trade.
Chandler was Ross' college dorm roommate, probably assigned by the school. Monica probably arranged for him to get the apartment across the hall (hers was Nana's, or something). Did Ross live in that apartment before he married the lesbian?
Joey moved in with Chandler when his previous roommate left; he responded to an ad. Why is the former roommate no longer a friend?
Phoebe roomed with Monica, but when and how did they meet?
They were best friends throughout high school, then must have lost touch.
Never been said, but it seems quite likely. Or, it could have been that Chandler was looking for a place, and Ross mentioned there was something for sale opposite his sister's. (Chandler and Monica probably weren't that friendly at that point, her having cut off his toe and everything.
He dated Monica, they broke up, she wouldn't speak to him, the friends stayed loyal to Monica, as she was actually related to one of them (Kip 'lifted right out'- the one with all the kips)
I don't think that's ever been said- maybe Monica advertised for a roomate, and Phoebe was the one that replied. I don't think she went to high school with the others.
The grandmother referred to as "Nana" was Judy's mother, now dead. The grandmother that *still* rents the apartment is Jack's mother. We don't know if Ross ever lived there, but it's a reasonable idea that both siblings moved in with her when they came to work in the city, and to get away from their awful mother.
The former roommate was named Kip. He was part of the gang, and they all used to hang out together. However, he & Monica started dating, and when they broke up they couldn't bear to be in the same room together. Even though the others had all promised that they would stay his friend, the poor bastard got phased out.
We don't know. The writers have surmised that Phoebe simply answered an advert, and for now that will have to do. However, this has never been revealed on the show, so more interesting explanations are possible. Some fans like the idea that she was a guest at Ross & Carol's wedding, but I prefer the notion that she begged for scraps behind Monica's restaurant.
The show has never told us. I'm guessing Monica was lonely, met Phoebe on the street (or in the ethnic foods section! lol), started a conversation and made a friend.
Then why didn't the writers on Friends do a flashback episode in which we get to meet the unseen sixth Friend, Kip, and how Ross, Monica, and Chandler met Phoebe. (Rachel was elsewhere at the time of this flashback, maybe it was when she first met Barry.)
I don't know since this episode MIGHT be filmed w/o Joey in the episode if Matt LeBlanc were to host Saturday Night Live in New York that same week.
But I do know this, by the end of the flashback episode, Joey discovers the ad put out by Chandler and responds. Therefore, this leads up to the 10/31/96 episode, TOW The Flashback.
Remember TOW the Prom Video? As I recall, and I haven't seen this in a while, but Ross was already a "COLLEGE MAN," when Rachel, and Mon were getting ready for their High School Prom. So, certainly Ross is conceivably a year older at least since he and Monica are not in the same grade. I don't know that I ever remember hearing the 18 months, but I would venture to guess that Ross is certainly older by a year from that episode.
