Season 9 speculation

Assuming that season 9 is the final season (and that looks like a safe assumption right now) what is going to happen, and how will it all end?

In the past, the season-ending cliffhangers have always set up the main storylines for the next season, and I think it will be the same this year. So that sets up two big story arcs for next season:

-Ross/Rachel/Emma/Joey. Ross and Rachel attempting to finally define what kind of relationship they have; perhaps exploring some kind of relationship between Rachel and Joey; Rachel learning how to be a mother to Emma.

-Mondler trying to concieve.

I'll do the latter one first. Short of CCA getting pregnant IRL, I can't imagine that Mondler will have an easy time of it. I'm sure they will have trouble getting pregnant, and that will bring out the control-freak, drill-sergeant side of Monica. She'll be obsessively tracking her ovulation and demanding sex from Chandler at the most unoppurtune times, in the most unromantic ways, simply because she's ovulating. Hilarity ensues.

Now, this may be a little out there, but I had a thought. Suppose C&M go to a doctor to find out why they can't get pregnant, and they discover that it's Chandler's fault. I can imagine them finally deciding that they will get their baby by Monica going to a sperm bank, that would be a logical conclusion. Now here's where it could get interesting: Joey's sperm is still there at the sperm bank. I know they sort of did this story already (can't remember the name of the episode, sorry) but it was _very_ tongue-in-cheek at the time, and it was way before Mondler got together. This time it could potentially be serious, and it could also give a very interesting twist to the Chandler/Joey friendship, and ultimately could demonstrate how close those two are, if Chandler were to decide that he wants Joey to be the father of Monica's baby. And there was a teensy bit of foreshadowing for this in the season finale ("I do want to have a baby, I just want Joey to be the father.").

Perhaps it would be a bit too soap-opera-y, but if handled right I think it could be interesting. Another thought is that I think it's likely that Mondler's troubles concieving a baby could cause some serious friction in their relationship, perhaps even a temporary break-up. In 4 years they have never had any serious problems in their relationships - that's gotta be some kind of modern record for a TV couple. They're overdue for some kind of major relationship trouble. Still, I feel certain that the series will end with them still together. The series must end with goodwill between all 6 characters, and there simply isn't enough time in one season for C&M to go from happily married and trying to concieve a baby together, to happily divorced, no longer in love but still friends.

I also think next season will end with Monica getting pregnant. If the writers spend a big chunk of next season on the story arc of Monica trying to get pregnant, then that story has to be resolved somehow at the end. It could resolve with Monica deciding that she no longer wants to get pregnant, or knowing that she can't and deciding to adopt, but I doubt it.

I also feel certain that sometime next season we will see a scene between Monica and Rachel, where Monica confides that she is jealous of Rachel for getting pregnant so easily, and Rachel in turn tells Monica that at least she has a husband and a stable relationship. All very good-natured, of course, but the writers do seem to like to play C&M and R&R off of each other.

As for R&R, I keep going back and forth but right now I do think they will end up together, though I also think the whole Joey thing will be an obstacle for them throughout most of next season. This may sound strange, but what mainly has me convinced is the portrayal of Emma's birth. I really believe that the writers of "Friends" wrote Emma's arrival into the world as a metaphor for Ross and Rachel's relationship as a whole.

Think about it. Emma took for-ev-er to arrive. Rachel was many days past her due date before she ever went into labor (which happened right after Ross kissed her), and then her labor lasted an excruciatingly long time ("Five women have come and gone with their babies!"). Kind of like R&R themselves have taken an eternity to get together. And then when Emma finally did arrive, she was backwards. Kind of like 2 people having a baby together before they realize that they are in love and can commit to each other - a lot of people would say that was backwards.

But in spite of the interminable wait, and in spite of being backwards, the baby did arrive and was perfectly healthy. If I'm right about Emma's birth being a metaphor for R&R's relationship, then they should finally get their day when they arrive and are healthy together as a couple. But I also think they won't arrive there until late next season. First Rachel has some more growing up to do. JA is brilliant, but Rachel can be very immature sometimes, and I really do believe that one of the reasons the writers decided to make Rachel have a baby was to force her to grow up.

And I do think the Joey thing will be an obstacle. It's pretty obvious the way it was written that there was nothing truly serious about the Joey/Rachel proposal. Joey didn't mean to make it, and Rachel really didn't mean to accept it. But the fact that it happened at all might cause Rachel to reconsider whether or not she might have any feelings for Joey. And/or Ross finds out and becomes upset and jealous, and then that throws up a roadblock between R&R. There are a lot of ways it can happen, but I'm pretty sure this "proposal" will throw up some kind of obstacle between R&R, something that will take them most of next season to overcome.

Of course the ending that I'm predicting (C&M still happily married and expecting a baby, R&R finally together and happy with their daughter) may all be a bit too pat and obvious. Especially if they decide to finally put Joey and Pheobe together. Maybe that's a little too pollyanna. Then again, this is a comedy after all. And I think the series really has to end on a mostly happy note, with all 6 characters still very close to each other. I'm sure the writers will try to think of some twist at the end, but it could be a hundred different things. Perhaps some character(s) will have to move away, out of NYC, because of work. I think that's a very likely ending. Or perhaps Rachel will end up with Joey, with Ross stepping aside and deciding to let Joey be the "father" to his child. Or Chandler deciding to let Joey be the biological father of his child. Heck, maybe Rachel gives her baby to C&M to raise. Okay, that isn't very likely but there has always had a slight incestuous vibe between these 6 characters. The series may end with some sort of twisty cross-pollination between the couples, all the better to reinforce how close these 6 people are to each other.

So, does anybody else out there have any opinions on this? Agree? Disagree? What would you like to see happen and how would you like the show to end once and for all?

i like your ideas- and i agree that the main storylines will probably center around monica and chandler trying to get pregnant and a storyline surrounding rachel/ross/joey. i also could see the possibility of mondler having problems trying to conceive and the storylines becoming very funny- but what i did think was far out was you suggesting that joey be the father of chandler's baby. i mean - its nice to have good friends and everything, but there's a limit. people who are stable don't just have their best friends siring their kids- especially if they see each other 24/7!

Thanks.

It's just an idea. It probably is pretty far out, but I still think it might happen. FWIW, if this story did happen, I don't think it would follow through to the point where Monica would actually get pregnant by Joey. At the last moment, I think they would discover that one of Chandler's little swimmers did get through after all, and Mondler would get their baby.

Well, with these 6 friends, the writers do seem to like to test the limits.

Yeah, except that these people aren't stable. They're TV characters, and TV characters are always a little unstable. They have larger-than-life flaws, larger-than-life problems, and larger-than-life solutions. I think it could be a great story. It's got drama, comflict, and would ultimately emphasize just how much Chandler loves both Monica and Joey. It's still a long-shot, so if you really hate the idea don't worry too much. But I do think it would be a really interesting way to go.

Normally Season 9 is Final season. That also depends on program's diversity and popularity. Even popular show such as "Seinfeld" had 9 Seasons. Expect Beverly Hill 90210 but even that show became less popular in the end and most importantly financial sucide.

Many young watchers are saying "How about following 90210?"

That may take "Friends" further and show may stop losing money. But it would be like comparing Friends with Seinfeld. Best idea would be breaking up Chandler Bing and Monica Geller. And then making Phoebe Buffay and Monica Geller some sort of Lesbian couple with one child. Plus making Rachel Greene married Ross Geller and divorcing and then Joey Tribbiani is like some sort of Cosmo Kramer?

But Seriously. If you really want to make this show popular then dump Monica and Chandler (Say moving to another State) and bring some diversity say African and Chinese as new friends that may make show run couple of more season but I doubt Kauffman is interested it. Beside it all major show last 9 seasons.

I just hope they don't do things with Joey that is far off of Joey's character. Joey LOVED Rachel, but he said time and time again that he would do NOTHING that Ross would not approve of. Joey is a decent and sweet guy when it comes to his friends. He would NOT stand in the way of R&R. Period. End of discussion. He is the kind of guy that would take his crushed heart and leave rather than live a lie (i.e., he and Rachel decide to keep their "engagement" a secret), or lose his friend (any kind of interference with R&R would cost him Ross with out a doubt).

The only problem with this is that it doesn't make for "good" TV. Conflict is the life blood of compelling TV. Who shot JR? Who is pregnant? Who is the dad? Blah blah blah. I would hope that the writers are a bit less cliched, but deep down, I know that they are. Sucks huh?

I completely agree with you. Perhaps I didn't make myself clear. The scenario I'm thinking of is that Ross and Rachel themselves would realize that Rachel accepting Joey's proposal (even under the curcumstances that it happened) could mean that maybe Rachel has some feelings for Joey, and that this is something that should be explored. Certainly if Ross finds out (and I'm sure he will) then that will be one cold bucket of water on any romantic feelings he has for Rachel. At least for the short term. And what you're saying of Joey is also true of Ross - if he believed that Rachel truly wanted to be with Joey then he would step aside. Perhaps, for the first half or so of next season, that is what Ross will try to do, and then Joey would be free and clear to pursue something with Rachel. Until Ross and Rachel finally do realize the true depth of their feelings for each other, and then Joey will be the one to step out of the way. Or maybe Ross will step aside permanently, and J&R will end up together. I still don't think that will happen, but never say never.

He is the kind of guy that would take his

Again, I agree. I am not imagining that Joey would ever, ever consciously interfere with R&R. Rather, that what happened in the hospital room between Rachel and Joey would force R&R to decide that maybe they shouldn't get romantically involved again, and thus, leave the door open for Joey.

I'm not so sure. I mean yeah, sure, conflict is drama. There's no getting around that. You can't make a TV show about 6 people who never make any mistakes and where nothing bad ever happens. But by the same token, people _love_ to see characters they care about making sacrifices for each other. People love to see love. So whatever happens in the end, the writers need to emphasize the love that these 6 people all have for each other. But the problems between them won't get resolved until the final reel. That's just showbiz.

Plus if Ross does step aside for Joey. Rachel would move back into Joey's apartment. This allows for more interaction between Rachel and Monica. It would also allow for Rachel to be right across the hall with a baby monitor (while Emma is napping) so that the group is together, but the baby is not on camera. With Rachel and Emma living at Ross's one or the other has to be home with the baby and it is very doubtful that they all would start hanging out at Ross's apartment. Considering it has been said that Emma will not have a lot of on air time either one of the 6 is not going to be included in the group or a move is necessary.

I think that you are both right in a way. ( Sorry to barge in like this) But Joey is a sweethearted guy that loves Rachel. And Ross should be the one to step to the side. Honestly I'm not too crazy about this R/R/J storyline. But I think one of the saving graces of it is that all the people in this "triangle" really do love each other a lot, and will bend over backwards to avoid truly hurting each other. But in the end, Joey may very well end up sacrificing the most.

It'd be nice if they did have complications - I for one have had enough of pregnant women in this show. It'd be nice to see someone who *wants* to get pregnant but isn't able to.

I like Joey. And it's about time they brought a new angle to the whole will-they/won't-they thing with R&R.

They should definately do something with Phoebe this year. Provided they change her back to the original character of Phoebe, and not the Phoebe we've known for the last few years. I really don't see her with Joey - it just seems so easy and totally unrealistic.

Maybe R&R could think they've finally got it all sorted out and then Ross realises he's gay? Or maybe not. I just hope they don't end the show with a wedding. Please - we've had more than enough of them too!!! I'd like to see C&M together and happy (hopefully minus a pregnancy throughout the season). r&r - i really couldn't care at this point. Joey should finally get his big break and celebrate with Chandler his best friend. Right now Phoebe is the only outsider. There's the whole R/R/J thing, and there's C&M but Phoebe doesn't fit it anywhere. Give her something to do. I think this goes right back to when they all went to London and left her behind - since then she's had very little interaction in the main plot lines of the other characters.

I aggree. I mean I used to be a very die hard Ross and Rachel fan, but as season eight progressed I just couldn't see them together anymore. After all they have been through it doesn't seem feasible for them to just get together all of a sudden. I like Joey a lot and I want to see him happy.

Totally unrealistic. They have always been really good friends and I don't see them in a romantic relationship. I don't think the show will end up all couples because the writers said they didn't want that. I don't think it would be too great either.

Well, "nice" isn't the first word that leaps to my mind, but essentially yes, I agree. It would be different, and would provide some new storytelling opportunities. Plus, there's something just karmically right about it, in a perverse sort of way. Rachel, who is single and doesn't want any children yet, easily gets pregnant after a one night stand with Ross, even though they were using protection. But Monica, who is married and desperately wants to have a baby, cannot get pregnant even though she's continually having unprotected sex with her husband.

I really like Joey, too. And I do not want him to end up as just another obstacle in the long R&R saga. If the writers do go in this direction, I hope that they will explore the whole Joey/Rachel thing with some real depth. And if R&R do end up together after all, I think it will be Joey who puts them together in the end, who realizes that Rachel truly loves Ross, and who will step aside and sacrifice his own happiness for Rachel's.

I don't agree. The Pheobe of the last few years has not been perfect (none of them have been) but I like her just fine. And I could see her ending up with Joey - it certainly has been hinted at often enough in the past 8 years. If not Joey, then I'd like to see her end up with David the scientist guy.

That would be pretty much out of left field, since absolutely nothing has hinted at this in the past 8 years.

Or maybe not. I just hope they don't end the show with a

Aww, I love weddings. Maybe if R&R got remarried in Vegas, with Elvis officiating, that would cut down on the sap factor.

Me, too. Though I'd like to see Monica find out that she's pregnant at the very end of the season. And I think she will.

I love both Ross and Rachel as individual characters, but yeah, I'm pretty indifferent as to whether or not they end up together. An awful lot of people do care, though, very much.

Joey should finally get his big

Yep. She lifts right out.

One of my main worried about next season is that Phoebe will be neglected. And she may very well be, since she is not an integral part of the main storylines, and since the writers have never really been able to write well for all 6 characters in any one season. But then again, since this will be the final ever season, I'm hoping that the writers will make an extra effort to make sure that each character gets some good stories. I would love to see some of Pheobe's family again before the show ends. Not her dad so much, but maybe her birth mom, or her brother Frank, or even Alice and the triplets. And of course Ursula.

I'm going to go a tad off topic here, but I just thought of something: I've read quite a few posts where everyone is talking about how much they've changed Phoebe's character, and I definitely agree. But the way they've changed MONICA's character bothers me more. She used to be very attractive, capable and friendly, just a little eccentric. Now they've got her hair looking a little greasy (IMO), she's dressing in ill-fitting clothes, and her character just seems a little nuts at this point. It's really becoming more creepy than funny in my opinion. I think they're just going too far with it. She doesn't seem at all level-headed, where is the Monica that was going to turn down the chef job to keep from hurting Pete's feelings? Or the Monica who could cater an entire party? I feel her character is too flaky now to handle even the tiniest job.

Okay, I'm rambling now. :) Just wondering if anyone else had noticed.

I think in Friends like Seinfeld where there was one neurotic friend "Cosmo Kramer". In "Friends" we have Joey and Phoebe but Phoebe seems to be turning into more or less Cosmo Kramer. Her character seems to be becoming more boring then it was in Mad About you. No wonder why producer didn't give her any permanent character in Caroline in the City or Sabrina the Teenage Witch.

As for Monica well, Here is little hint for ya. Monica Bing is married and that is why she is different from Monica Gellar. As many of you know that Kauffman is dumping them since their story is pretty much ended. Got married "now trying to have children" and that's it... Unless, in this Season 9 producer want to create some sort of atmosphere that Married friend can be as normal as single friend. If you have watched most popular shows {i.e. Seinfeld, Everybody Loves Raymond, Mad about you and Beverly Hills 90210} you would know that in the end more then one couple/companion get married and story ends in good or bad, the way producer want to present to the public. Nevertheless it would be nice to see in this season that Monica and Chandler got divorce like Ross and that may make this show more popular, realistic and more civilized.

I guess it won't last any longer than till 905. They still have to do some comedy.

Interesting thought I never had though having watched the last episodes around 5 times, but I don't think the writers care that much about symbolism.

If it is a symbol, don't forget that they couldn't find a name, i.e. they are unable to define their kind of relationship. Thus the "Emma Analogy" would be forshadowing. The question is: How will Monica call it?

As I said before, i.e. last time I posted on ATF in late May, I strongly believe that the 200th episode is all about the final reunion of Ross and Rachel. And they remain happily ever after ...

Yeah, I expect season 9 to start with Joey's words: "No, no, this is Ross' ring!" or the like. He won't build up an relationship on a lie.

Yeah, she'd have accepted a proposal from anyone fulfilling a minimum of requirements. Damn Janice.

I don't find this storyline to be mutually exclusive with comedy. They can still do plenty of comedy while having this huge misunderstanding between R&R, and even while exploring a possible J&R relationship. If things are ever going to be truly and finally resolved between R&R, I just don't think it will happen until near (or at) the end of the series' run. But we'll find out soon enough, one way or the other.

All writers care about symbolism. All good writers.

That's a very good point.

Thus the "Emma

I'm not sure I'm following you here. Are you saying that Monica will be the one to define R&R's relationship in the end? In any event, I do think there is probably some symbolism in the fact that R&R got their daughter's name from Monica, the name she would have used if she had had a daughter with Chandler. Like I said, the writers do love to play the 2 couples off of each other. Beyond that, I'm not sure what it means.

Well I have no clue what eppy they're on now, except that they're well over 100. I gather from your post that the 200th eppy will happen soon. If so, then like I said above, I think the final reunion of R&R will happen later rather than sooner.

No, he wouldn't. Which is why this complication would have to happen because of Ross's and/or Rachel's reaction to the proposal, not Joey's. That is to say, probably Ross will find out about the "proposal", and Rachel's acceptance, and he will be so hurt that he will then push Rachel away - into Joey's arms. Or Rachel herself will be so thrown by her own reaction to Joey's proposal that it will make her stop and think about what she really feels for both men. Or both. Joey himself would never come between R&R unless he was convinced (by R&R themselves) that their relationship wasn't going anywhere.

It's Janice's purpose in life to create misunderstandings and conflict wherever she goes. So she was only doing her job.

Christoph PäperTeresias

*Teresias* :

I'm not sure whether to comment that. ;-) I agree that there are a lot of TV shows where two plots care about the same thing in different ways, Ally McBeal and Star Trek TNG coming to my mind. Nevertheless, comedy and some drama come first for the writers of Friends, IMHO. We'll never know if Emma's birth was really inteded to be symbolistic.

That remark wasn't to be taken too seriously, but yes, if they're stuck to that symbolism, she'll do it.

They've done 194 episodes after the completion of season 8, thus 906 it'll be. That's around Halloween -- #6 aires usually in the first days of November. Or, when is Thanksgiving scheduled again?

Yeah right, I forgot.

I just want to add a few more words about symbolism. I feel comfortable making a blanket statement like "all good writers care about symbolism" because in all my 39 years I have never read a good book, watched a good movie, or watched a good TV show, that didn't have some symbolism in it somewhere. I'll grant you that symbolism is a lot less prevalent in sitcoms (and comedies in general) than in drama shows, but I think that's more because the format doesn't really lend itself to symbolism much, rather than because the writers don't care.

But it's still there if you take the time to look for it. I'll give you a couple of examples. The first is from "Friends". I don't know the episode name (I'm terrible about episode names) but it's the episode where R&R take their infamous "break", and it ends with Ross kissing Chloe. In that episode, there is another storyline with Phoebe, where she is dating a foriegn diplomat she met outside the U.N. I think his name was Sergei. But this man doesn't speak any English, and so his translator must go along on all their dates. Complications ensue, and the relationship never goes anywhere.

I absolutely believe that Phoebe's storyline in this episode was meant to be symbolic of what was happening with R&R. Phoebe and the foriegn diplomat are both nice, well-meaning people; they both really like each other, and are attracted to each other and want to pursue a relationship. But inability to communicate - literally - gets in their way and wrecks their chances of being together. No matter how much they want a relationship, no matter how hard they try, neither one of them can understand what the other is trying to say. That is _exactly_ what happened between R&R in that episode. They love each other, and they want to keep the relationship going (right after the fight Rachel confesses "I don't want to take a break!"). But a series of misunderstandings and miscommunications forces them apart in the end.

Here's another example, from "Frasier". This time I remember the episode title: "Are You Being Served?". In this episode, Niles is trying to decide whether or not he should sign divorce papers to end his marriage with Maris. Everybody except Niles knows that this is the right thing for him to do, that his marriage with Maris has become a dead-end, but Niles still can't let go. In this same episode, there is a story between Daphne and Martin, where Daphne has tried to throw out a bunch of Martin's old gadgets that he never uses anymore. Martin catches her and stops her before she can throw it out. Daphne calls it a box of "useless old junk", and it really is, but Martin still can't let go and insists on keeping it all. Again, I absolutely believe that the writers intended for the Martin/Daphne story to symbolize what was going on in Niles' life at the time. Niles' marriage is far past its prime - it has grown musty, stale and useless. Just like Martin's box of old junk. Both Niles and Martin should let go of the old stuff and move on. But neither one can.

Thos are just a couple of examples off the top of my head. With a little effort, I can come up with a lot more. All of this is my long-winded way of saying that yes, sitcom writers - even the "Friends" writers - do care about symbolism and make use of it sometimes.

What about the end - where Niles thinks he has asked for a divorce because Hester named her sons after lab rats. He goes into the powder room, and there is a loud bang! He then emerges covered in shaving foam from one of Martin's old gadgets! :)

For me, the episode ends badly though, as Niles scurries back to Maris after she calls to say the divorce papers were a bluff.

Of course we know that Miles did leave Maris eventually. This may sound odd, but I kind of miss Maris, even though we never saw her. Just like I miss Ugly Naked Guy. I'd love it if UNG would return for one episode in the final season.
