Many fans regard 421 "TOW the Invitation" as the worst episode of Friends, since it mostly consists of clips from earlier episodes. Presumably the producers were saving time and/or money for the London expedition.

It was a disappointing first run episode, but actually, I kind of like watching Ross and Rachel's Greatest Hits in reruns. It's not an episode, it's a Greatest Hits album for limited tastes.

You need a PAL-compatible TV and VCR first, otherwise it's genuinely not worth getting the tapes as you won't be able to watch them (NTSC can be watched on a PAL TV, but not vice-versa). Then when you've got that sorted, head on over to somewhere like www.blackstar.co.uk, which sells them.
Well, I guess you live in the US, and that means that you'll have to have a special video for it, because European and American videocassettes are different. I think there are machines that handle both formats, though..

Most UK VCRs come with NTSC conversion as standard these days - I know on the last three VCRs I've had, including the one I have now, it's been on all of those. The reverse can't be said of US VCRs though, unfortunately, as PAL is a higher format than NTSC (something to do with the number of lines - cue Tennant :)).
PAL does have more lines, but the real improvement is that the chrominance vectors alternately exchange places in the phase diagram, hence converting hue errors from transmission distortion into luminance differences.
Errm, it says PAL on the front? Checked your manual, Activia? :)
If all you're interested in is Friends videos, then you would be better off going for DVD, as apart from all the other advantages, multi-region players outputting NTSC from PAL discs *are* available in North America.

It's actually rather comforting to discover that I'm the normal sort of fan who does *not* remember scenes in which Rachel fetches a few boxes, as opposed to Chandler & Monica furtively scuttling out after the sex.
I wish they sold them here in the U.S. as they do in other parts of the world, my tapes are eventually going to die on me from watching them so much (especially season two and three).

I think Jennifer isn't underrated as a person too much, but she *is* underrated as an *actress*. Too many people see her just as 'Brad Pitt's girlfriend' these days, they don't see her as an actress in her own right, which is a shame because she's *very* talented - and I urge anyone who disagrees to watch TO The Morning After the next time they can.
And to answer the inevitable question from Tennant, I am likely to start up one hell of an argument here from the inevitable misinterpretation someone will make from this so I apologise in advance: perhaps what I should have said is that while it was obviously *very* good acting, it was also very obvious that David and Jennifer were very emotionally involved in the characters and that scene (like I said, they've said so themselves), *perhaps* to the point where it is *possible* some of the overwhelming emotion Ross and Rachel experienced during that scene was *real* emotion from the people behind the actors, if that makes any sense. It was *so* real, that when I first saw it, I've gotta be honest here - I didn't really see Ross and Rachel, Characters (tm) being acted out by two obviously very talented actors, I saw two people crying their eyes out because their relationship was ending, in spite of the fact they really didn't want it to. It was real. And *that*, my friend, is why you're likely to come up against some very harsh opposition when you say Chandler and Janice's breakup scene was more touching than Ross and Rachel's breakup. :P
And I've kinda got off the subject now, so I should really go before I get even more off-subject. :)
And that is the essence of great acting: when you no longer see them as actors. David and Jennifer have always pulled this off, with the possible exception of TOA The Beach when Rachel kept saying, "But sometimes I just ..." "What?" "I just...." "What?" "I just....." <they kiss>. There seemed to be something artificial about Rachel's inability to find the right word, but maybe that's just me.

I thought that was down to the writing, not the acting. In all honesty, I thought for the most part that TOA The Beach wasn't a particularly well-written episode, for a finale at least, and was basically your average rush-job mechanical sitcom script with a couple of exceptions, but that the acting on all sides saved it.

This is exactly what i'm getting at. People never talk about her acting, they talk about how beautiful she is, or how she's Brad Pitt's girlfriend. On the show, Rachel cracks me up all the time but no one really ever praises her for it.

YES. I don't watch it in reruns because I don't get any say in which moments I see and how much of them I see - they mauled the aforementioned CP scene, and I run out the room screaming whenever the scene at the end of TOW The Jellyfish comes on (I've only ever seen that episode all the way through once). Why not just watch the originals? No mauling, and you get complete control over which moments you see.
You're very astute - just checked Jellyfish out & it's horrendous - some of the shots in 421 are not clips but out-takes from 401.
In a way I think the CP scene in 421 stands up because it's how Ross might remember it (though 207 is much better), but then the Joey/Phoebe/Monica stuff from 107 & again with Chandler from 316 can't be his thoughts.
Just think Tina, if 421 hadn't been a cheap clip show, they could have reshot the R&R story from Ross's then Rachel's POVs, and really *said* something about their whole relationship.

Supposedly it was the good times vs. the bad times. But yes, I agree, they could have actually said something about their relationship if it hadn't just been a cheap excuse to save on the budget for the London episode.
The entire show consisted of Ross mailing Rachel an invitation to his wedding and Rachel deciding not to go. Everything else was Ross and Rachel remembering things about their relationship, and consisted of clips from all seasons.
