My guess is (spoilers)...

...Paul Rudd is going to stay as Phoebe's boyfriend and future husband (Feb. maybe?). I got that feeling when I saw him with the gang at the end od TOW Ross' Inappropriate Song. That's what I'd like to see anyway, and if in the next episodes we see Rudd's character interacting with say, Chandler and Rachel for example, we'll know that the 7th friend has finally arrived in the last season.

As for Mike, in the official spoiler for episode 909 you'll learn a bit more. It's not much, but it could be a clue... Although I read on tvguide.com:

Actor Paul Rudd will guest star in a few episodes of Friends this fall, TV Guide Online has learned.

a few episodes... So there goes your theory, unfortunately.

But Phoebe and Michael don't have any spark. Rudd is boring in this role (and I usually like him, but he is pretty droll). He's just not funny and this IS supposed to be a comedy.
