Matt Perry: The new James Bond???

OK, so I was reading the tabloids again...

I *think* it was this week's Star that mentioned MP is being considered to replace Pierce Brosnan as Bond. Apparently, PB wants to spend more time with his family and TPTB want to make Bond a little hipper. The blurb included a really nice shot of MP.

My Q to ATF members (and think fairly about this):

Does MP have that "special something" to be Bond?

IMO - and I just adore MP - no. I'd like to see him tackle more Tom Hanks'-like roles. If true, I think it would be an unwise move.

no he totally doesn't!!! I think he'd end up ruining the Bond (okay, I'll admit now that I haven't seen one single Bond film, but I heard their not supposed to be that funny, cause they're action.) thing cause he's too funny.

After the attempt to inject humour in to the Batman series with the George Clooney fiasco (didnt even see the film, the promos were enough) and the choice of Ben Affleck taking over the role of Jack Ryan from Harrison Ford, the choice of Matthew Perry for Bond would be the worst casting in the history of cinema. I am not a huge Bond afficinado, but I do know that Bond has a sense of deobnaire wit and charm and sophistication that few men have, and no offence MP, I love your comedy, but you cannot be a Bond!

Don't get me wrong Chandler is great, but you need someone 'strong looking' to play Bond.

Silence is sometimes quite deadly, it means people are doing 'other' things.

I'm quite surprised actually over the reaction to the rumour about Perry as Bond. Only a few people have realised he's not actually all American. What's more interesting to note is that out of all the previous (movie) Bonds, Moore is the only one that was born in England.

Yes, but all the rest were from the UK... Sean Connery is either Irish or Welsh, Pierce Brosnan is Irish... Again, the big problem is that MP doesn't have that type of charm, that kind of suave, debonair, air about him...

And I agree. MP is too American to pull off James Bond. I know that you can learn how to speak with a British accent (Renee Zellweger in the upcoming Bridget Jones' Diary is one example, but the Brits weren't too happy about that), but it just isn't the same as the real thing.

Weren't we? Her lack-of-accent is ok, nothing for us to get upset about. Perhaps it would have been easier to just cast an English girl, but hey! these things happen. At least we're not remotely as annoyed about BJ as we were about The Patriot, U571, or any film where the Brit is the villain by virtue of his accent alone.

I suspect that's some actress's PR after she didn't get the part! I hadn't heard anything negative about RZ, she managed to work for Helen Fielding's publishers for 8 weeks without anyone suspecting she wasn't English, and that must prove something. I'm not sure about filming the book in the first place (I used to read the newspaper columns first, and have both books) but I don't think she'd be bad as Bridget.

We're not talking about the basic premise of the plot, but the details that were SO untrue. British troops never burned anyone in churches - that is an incident from the 1940s transplanted and recreated for the film. It was a Nazi/Gestapo action. Can you see why that might have upset the British? That's just the tip of an iceberg...

And there were a lot more "Americans" (colonists) who wanted to keep the king than you'd ever think from the movies. Just like the motives for "defending" Mexico, slavery and personal wealth were the motivation for a lot of "good Americans". Very noble.

Which isn't in the UK and Lazenby is Australian mate.

He's an actor, maybe he could act. It may be somewhat of a challenge for him to do Bond but if he did it well it would open a lot of doors.

Connery is Scottish. The character of Bond is actually half Scottish and half Swiss...

Nationality has little to do with it. Ability to pull the acting job off has everything to do with it. I like Perry, but I doubt he could pull Bond off.

Heres a standard one:

MP is no longer fat MP shouldn't, and of course won't, be the next Bond.

MP hasn't got the wit? Mr. Quick Quip Perry (try saying that fast) can't portray Bond's humour? Some of the quips in the last three films have been adlibbed by Brosnan and I think Matthew is up to that part of the role. However I don't think anybody is going to get close to 'And I thought Christmas came only one a year'. :)

Me too. Didn't some guy who was on a pretty terrible show called "Bosom Buddies" several years ago go on to win a couple of Oscar when he was done with tv? However, MP was on Entertainment Tonight today, and when asked about the Bond thing, he *acted* like he hadn't heard the rumors, said something in a terrible English accent :-), and basically (kind of) denied the whole thing. I think he said for ET to come back after he was finished filming Servicing Sarah and ask him about it again.

He also said that his new character in this movie is the toughest guy he has ever played, which is a step in the right direction for him, IMHO. He's played enough wimps!!

I think Matt Perry is great--funny, charming and cute but Bond material? I don't think so--Perry might be able to bring a sarcastic wit to '007' but what about the sophisication and debonaire attitude? Can he truly deliver the line 'Shaken not stirred' the way only Bond can?

Pierce Bronsan, Sean Connery...early Roger Moore--that's Bond material <g> I'd rather see Perry tactical more semi-serious roles with still an element of romantic & comedic theming like Tom Hanks.

No, nothing's sacred. Hollywood has no concept of sacred. I still haven't forgiven the industry for "Scarlett," the disastrous sequel to "Gone with the Wind." I asked someone responsible for that debacle "why?" and he responded "$$$$."

My greatest fear: In my lifetime the Hollywood folks will actually make The Remake of the Remake of the Sequel of The Brady Bunch movie.

It's a shame that they've gotta keep perpetuating the same schtuff on us. Could they BE more lazy?
