.....I really do like the idea of Joey and Rachel...... I really don't want her and Ross to end up together----they've had their chances and it just doesn't seem that they really love each other, otherwise, you'd think their pregnancy would have finally brought them together for good (not that this will not happen eventually....). There are so many things that have kept these two from working their relationship out---and over the years, if it was "meant to be" surely it would have happened by now.....

He's finally at a place in his life where he's receptive to settling down and having a family.....even if the "family" isn't his own (remember how he "proposed" to both Phoebe and Rachel when he thought they were pregnant?.....) He's adorable......so lovable.......and I totally can see Rachel and he having the cutest relationship....
I realize that there are so many people here hell-bent on the "Rachel and Ross till death do us part" idea but.....the more I think about it......I totally love the idea of the series ending up with Rachel and JOEY.......
Oh I totally agree. I dont think Ross & Rachel would make a good couple anymore. It's hard to tell now whether anything will happen between Rachel & Joey since Rachel doesn't seem to see Joey as anything more than a good friend. Although, that's how it was before she learned that Ross had feelings for her, so ya never know.
If anything does happen between the two, this would undoubtedly create alot of tension between Ross & Joey.
I'd say 90% of the Joey and Rachel supporters are female.
I'd say it's obvious how guys like Joey get so much.
Why Joey and Rachel shouldn't get together:
1. Joey would be stabbing Ross in the back; if this was a soap opera, then i'd say go for it. But it's a comedy with light drama.
2. Ross and Rachel are still very much in love, whether they can admit it or not. They got married while they were drunk, even though they were both adamant that they were not in love.
3. Many former Ross and Rachel supporters had given up. Myself included. Only one thing could get the couple to work their differences, and that's having a baby together. Gee, what a coincidence...
No, I think there are some guys who are envisioning themselves in Joey's place. A number of the folks who are pro-R&J are put off by how badly Ross has been written for so long now. He's not allowed to be the same character which made the R&R connection work so well at the beginning of the show - and for the life of me, I can't figure out why, since what we have now is not particularly funny or pleasant.
My husband very much prefers Joey to Ross, and he recently said the same thing; while *he* Ross would betray Joey if the roles were reversed, ("Ross has no self-control") he thinks Joey is too honorable a man to hurt him like this. Most folks who really, really think about this with any depth seem to understand that any coupling of Joey and Rachel really constitutes a massive betrayal; the real question is not whether or not Joey would be stabbing Ross in the back, but whether or not the audience cares enough about Ross to think that's actually a problem worth worrying about. Which, in my mind, constitutes a really serious lack of judgement on the part of the writers; if they intended for everybody to be all gooey and happy about Joey taking away everything Ross has ever wanted, then they are deliberately feeding one of the their protagonists to the dogs, and this whole thing is kind of creepy and heartless. If they want us to care about Ross' pain, and they are planning for Ross to win, then they shouldn't have shaded him in such a way that the audience turned on him so enthusiastically. Very, very short-sighted writing of Ross for a couple of years now.
Well, they seem to fall in and out of that...but there is this: R&R have at least got a mutual co-dependant spiral going, and anybody who gets in the middle of them gets stomped on sooner or later. Joey is unwise to be stuck in this mess.
Or some realistic writing. I can't believe they married these two off and didn't make them have a single serious conversation about WHY their uninhibited impulse was to do that.

If Ross didn't want Ben to live with his lesbian ex-wife and her life

I don't consider this a flame, because you make a good point. I just remember one of the times when Chandler and Janice were involved and Joey convinced Chandler to back off because Janice and her husband had a child together. At least for me, this whole issue is less about Ross and Rachel versus Joey and Rachel as it is about the child. I understand there can be other good family situations, but (as I have written extensively earlier) when it really comes down to it the absolute best situation for a child is for her to be with her biological parents in a happy and stable marriage. (I say this as the child of divorce and the husband in a 14 year marriage with two children.) I understand this is idealistic, but there is nothing wrong with aiming for the ideal, and I will never be convinced that any other family situation is better than this ideal.
I understand Ross and Rachel have had their opportunities and let stupid behavior get in the way, but the fact is they do love each other, and least in the sense that they are committed friends. They have a far stronger foundation for a marriage than the huge majority of people that get married, and certainly a stronger foundation than couple who get married after a relatively short time who only have strong passionate love as their basis for getting married. For eight years I would guess I have not missed more than 6 episodes in their first run. If Joey and Rachel get together I think that might be enough to make me stop watching the show.
I totally disagree with this. R&R had so many chances to get together on a permanent basis, but it never worked out. Also, there is way too much "baggage" for them to try and ever make a marriage work. Even if they do marry because she's pregnant, it'd be the worst mistake of their lives. They love each other because of the baby and because they are still such good friends, but a romantic, hearts-n-flowers, fireworks love is not in the cards for the. I think if a show takes a direction that is disagreeable to some, they have the right to turn the show off. How else can your disapproval show? Help the ratings go up, the writers will keep the direction going.

I would disagree that the two were not in love. I think they *are* in love, but they haven't professed it for a long time. I agree, however, that all six of them will love the baby! Although based on the level of maturity the six of them shown, I would say it would take all six. <bg>

I agree with everything there, except that how can you live with someone for seven years, be roomates for two of those seven, then all of a sudden become attracted to them?! It's just not viable and really weird!
The idea about Rachel and Joey is growing on lots of people, and there's no denying that it has put a much needed and very intriguing twist on the whole Ross and Rachel saga. Personally, I think it's a stroke of sheer genius to put Joey into this mix, and this can only increase the already impressive ratings. If we are to be very cynical about this, it is highly unlikely that the show would have been as popular as it is now if Ross and Rachel had hooked up immediately after Rachel found out that she was pregnant. A simple solution like that would never have been the success the RnR fans are longing for. Let's face it, the path the show is taking at the moment is interesting, fresh and original.
Joey has been the best male character this season, while Rachel is his female counterpart. Together they form the greatest duo on the show nowadays, so I really like the idea of the two of them sharing dramatic and romantic storylines. The pregnancy adds drama and problems, and what is a sitcom without complications? I have to admit that I would love seeing the two of them as a couple (they were brilliant in 812), but I'm not sure it'll get that far. Hopefully, this storyline will stick around for as long as possible, though. :)

Well, in this case the Joey and Rachel story is improving both the ratings *and* the quality of the show. Joey and Rachel single-handedly saved episode 812 from being almost complete garbage, and with this new twist, the writers have more to work with.
I find it perfectly believable myself. Chandler and Monica knew each other for a decade before that fateful night in London, so it's not entirely new that people who know each other well all of a sudden develop stronger feelings for each other.
Besides, Matt LeBlanc shines at the moment, and Joey's crush is very touching indeed. Just out of curiosity, how many season 8 episodes have you seen?

Thanks! Joey and Rachel do work together well, but they don't seem to be mixing the storylines, and we hardly seem to see them together anymore. They might aswell have their own shows! I've had enough of C&M and J&R storylines. The only two who I think we should see more of together are Ross and Phoebe.
While I agree with you that the show needs more Joey and Chandler storylines, I'm very happy with the direction the show is taking at the moment. You should have seen the hype the show is getting here in the USA at the moment. Every commercial focuses on Joey and Rachel's relationship, and when the actors were interviewed about the show on the red carpet tonight, the reporters kept asking them what was going to happen between these two. The hype wouldn't have been so enormous if the show had been awful. Also, great ratings (which the show is getting at the moment) are crucial when it comes to renewing the actors' contracts. I think they'll be tempted to do one more season if they stay on top of the ratings like they are doing right now. Friends is after all the number one show in the country.
I think a new twist like this one can only renew the actors and writers' interest in the show since it provides them with new stories, and most importantly, the characters are allowed to grow because of it. Joey has undoubtedly matured as a character since he started to share the spotlight with Rachel in the middle of season 7, and especially in this season, and as of now, LeBlanc is doing a great job making Joey a deeper character than many of us could have imagined. Joey isn't just the funny sidekick with all the girlfriends any more, he's allowed some drama and lots of comedy.
I'm afraid I disagree. Joey has never been funnier than in season 5, 7 and 8 IMO. Besides, the show has always put some drama into its comedy, and that's what makes it so special. If the show had only offered the audience non-stop laughter, there's no way the show would have been as popular as it is right now. There were bittersweet moments already in season 1 (e.g. the birth), so I don't find it strange that we have scenes like the last scene in 812.
The small touches of drama make us care about the characters more than on a regular sitcom, and as long as all the characters provide great comedy, the show will continue its success.
I'm glad to see you agree, Priya. :) I haven't read the spoiler for 814 (and I'm not going to either, even though I've been told it's a biggie), but all these new plots are certainly making me more excited about watching the new episodes than I used to be. And it's all about renewing the audience's interest in the show anyway, something the show really has succeeded in doing.

Absolutely. Ross and Rachel didn't even have many storylines together back then, and they have been separated in most of the episodes this season. Rachel has spent a lot of time with Joey, while Ross has been busy with Mona and going mental.

Well, if he's going to act like he did in 811 and 812, chances are he won't be missed as much as he deserves. However, I don't think we'll see a season without a main cast member.
In the beginning they showed only promos for February sweeps, meaning that they included scenes from several shows. In that promo they showed a few clips from 812 and said that "Rachel has to choose between Ross and Joey." However, last night during the rerun of 805, there was a brand new promo for the show which had clips from the sweeps episodes where e.g. Ross looked at Joey and said "I'm the dad," and Rachel sat on the couch in her and Joey's apartment.
But don't you think that the hype is enormous because it's a famous show, that was made great by earlier seasons? The other thing is, why would ratings increase the chance of a renewed contract? It just lines the fat cat's pockets. The actors will sign if they feel the show has more left in it, that is if they don't want to go in another direction with their careers.
I have been impressed by Joey's maturity, but the thing that annoys me is that they keep trying to get laughs out of him by using his old traits, such as sandwiches and food.

Yes but the reason the show became popular is because of the characters, once you're number one there's only one more place to go, down. I still feel that the best of the show is behind it and I just hope the show goes out with a bang. Partly, but more than ten million extra viewers (Friends now averages around 25 million viewers every week) don't tune in just because of famous people and a famous show. They can see the Friends cast whenever they want to. Even though I'm among the few people who thought last season was great, the fact is that the critics have been raving about Friends all season. People Magazine, Entertainment Weekly, [address], USA Today, Entertainment Tonight, Access Hollywood.. you name it. Everybody is talking about Friends having a new era of great episodes. I believe that the reason for this is a combination of an on-going storyline which provides the audience with both drama and comedy, while some of the characters are being allowed to grow and mature.
After I moved to the USA, I have realised that most Americans have so many shows to choose from, that you don't just watch one show and stay loyal to that like European Friends-fans do. In other parts of the world you don't have as much to choose from, but in the USA, you do. I'm not saying that this applies to American Friends-fans, though, but it does apply to the people I've met here in the USA. They certainly didn't seem to care much about the show before season 8 began. But when the show started with the pregnancy in season 8 and this new potential couple, people immediately started watching it again and people have discussed it quite often. In a way, it has become the "water-cooler" topic again.
You're right. The food-jokes can be a little too much from time to time. I'll agree with you that the sandwich joke in 810 TOW Monica's Boots was not the best I've seen (Phoebe did it ten times better with her purse in 401 TOW The Jellyfish), but his thoughts in 813 TOW Chandler Takes A Bath about Rachel and cereal were really funny IMO.
I agree with you on the quality actually. I don't think season 8 is the show's best work, but I don't think it'll ever be more popular than it is at the moment. However, episode 813 impressed me, and I think it's about time that Joey finally gets a bit more screen-time.
Also, the amount of debates on this newsgroup and on other messageboards out there (I don't know how many times I have had this particular discussion, actually <g>) must indicate that people find this new direction intriguing, even though we may not all agree on it.
I disagree. The Ross and Rachel drama was what made me interested in the show from the pilot, and seven years later, I still find the small touches of drama in the comedy to be among the show's best work:
123 TOW The Birth - Ross promising to his son that he won't be there all the time 207 TOW Ross Finds Out - the kiss at Central Perk 222 TOW Two Parties - an incredibly funny episode which still manages to deal with Rachel's parents' divorce 424 TOW Ross's Wedding Part 2 - those infamous words 503 TO Hundredth - Phoebe saying goodbye to the triplets

I suppose more viewers does show something. Although I honestly and truthfully do not believe that the show is as good as it was. I do hope that the show goes on, but only if all six stay, as they hold the show together.

The Ross and Rachel Drama was very good, and that was pretty long and drawn out, but remember, it was broken up by the bedroom scenes. Maybe it's just me being annoyed at the writers for mishaps like Season 6?!!
Definitely. The show won't be the same with only five of them on the show. That's why I don't believe in a ninth season just yet. There have been too many signs of people wanting to leave (Aniston, Cox, Kudrow and Schwimmer).
As for the quality, it's still really good IMO. I have rarely seen so much hype and excitement surrounding the show like right now.
Well, I still think the pregnancy was a great twist. Granted, if someone had told me a year ago that season 8 would revolve around a pregnancy, I would have feared the show was in the process of "jumping the shark," but instead the show has produced a string of good episodes. If they can do that with something that has been done to death on other sitcoms, i.e. a pregnancy, who knows what they can come up with in the future.
As for attracting audiences, that's mostly for the so-called casual viewers. Fans like us will watch the show anyway. :)
If the casual viewers want pure comedy without any drama, they can tune in to see The Bernie Mac Show instead.

But having Rachel pregnant has given her a chance to grow up and for JA to show her true acting ability!

It's the most popular new sitcom here in the USA at the moment, and it's quite funny. Bernie Mac is an African-American comedian, and he had a rather big part in the flick "Ocean's 11." I would be very surprised indeed if this show doesn't start airing on British TV really soon.

It was the combination of small doses of drama and lots of good comedy that made me a fan of the show. The Ross and Rachel saga was what turned most of us into huge fans of the show, and that story managed to successfully include both comedy and drama.

Not really. As long as they manage to keep a balance where the rest of the characters provide comedy, I don't have a problem with it at all. On the contrary, it is making it really exciting to wait for 814. :)
Well, if you think about it the show started getting better ratings during the first episode. Not because of Rachel and Joey but because of the pregnancy! Not to say that Friends fans aren't tuning in to see what happens with these two (I hope nothing), but originally what brought people back to the show was real life situations. Something they could connect with!

I think it's the gossip. that's all that seems to intrest people. You watch what happens after J&R fizzle out and Rachel has the baby. People watch soaps if they want to relate with a situation.

Episode 813 TOW Chandler Takes A Bath got the biggest ratings since 803 TOW Rachel Tells. In fact, the episode had 29,1 million viewers.
Also, if you saw the promos for the last two episodes, they focused on Joey and Rachel's relationship. The promo for 813 did mention the storyline between Ross and Rachel, but most of the promo revolved around Joey and his newfound feelings. Yes, but I also believe that the increase in ratings for last weeks show had a lot to do with the fact that there wasn't a new Survivor on. Perhapes those that watched Survivor tuned in to see what the big deal was about Friends!! Maybe they will get hooked on the story line and Friends will have even more viewers now. by the way, the New Survivor starts February 28 and maybe these people will get attached to Friends and forget about Survivor!!
