who was fist singled out as a star

Coming to the end of this second-to-none sitcom, I think most of us agree, that the most successfull persons among the six with regards to other on-screen projects, have been JA and MP. But when the show started back in 1994, I think I recall DS being the first who everyone talked about as the one with the greatest potential. My own feeling is that this was because back then DS was allowed to portray Ross as a much more "likeable" guy, toning down his nerdy habits and jealousy issues and instead underlining his romantic and sensitive nature. But how do you remember this?

And I'm willing to bet lots of money that 95% of the audience would not have cared if they had casted someone else for her role, it was only a supporting character. I think it's between JA and MP, the former with all her romantic comedies _and_ Office Space, which you just have to love, MP mainly because of TWNY

People say she was a supporting character because she had third billing, but they're overlooking that the main cast lists were all in alphabetic order, and the word COX comes after ARQUETTE & CAMPBELL.

All that counts in Hollywood is Oscars and profits.

They're all equal on Oscars, and CC is way ahead on profits.

No, all her movies where she was the sole leading actress have not made a big profit, infact 'Shaking the tree' was a turkey that hardly made any money at all.

That's ridiculous. Take her out of the movie and it falls apart. To fault her for not carrying the movie is simply saying that she wasn't the only star in the movie - well, some movies are like that. But for assessing status, all that matters is being a leading player in films which make a lot of money, or Oscars.

You can say that about all 6 of them, but CC is still far out in front.

Yes it does. There's a difference between going to the cinema to watch a movie and going to the cinema to watch an actor/actress. You're suggesting the latter, while it is clearly the former. If I were to ask around my circle of friends, they'd all know what Friends is, but the majority wouldn't have a clue as to who Courteney Cox-Arquette is. Furthermore, Neve Campbell had to be talked into doing Scream 3, she didn't want to do it first. That directing guy said he wouldn't do it without her, because of the importance of her character. You can't seriously argue that CC's role mattered as much, can you? She could have easily been replaced.

She was lucky enough to be in Ace Ventura and the Scream Trilogy, but the main stars of these films were others, she was just from the "Olympic standing there team". Her contribution to these movies was notably smaller than those of the main actors. If I were to put your standard up for the others, then Charlie's Angels was an MLB film and everybody who went to watch it went to see him.

Courteny certainly seemed to be the most visible before the show began. The Springsteen video, and her character on Family Ties, and then as someone points out, the Ace Ventura movie.

Lisa Kudrow was of course visible before the show, in her role as the waitress on Mad About You. But I'm not sure how visible she was beyond those who watched that show.

The only other of the six that I can remember from before was Mathew Perry, who was in a show or two. But I'm not sure if I recognized him from the previous show, or needed a comment to point that out.

Yes I remember him in Beverly Hills 90210. He was guest-starring in a couple of episodes. Those were the days ...ahh...

Lisa was on an episode of "Cheers" as a brunette playing a character that was in the acting class Woody attended. The most recognized character when the series first started probably was Courteney. She definitely had the most sitcom experience! ~~~ Kathy

DS had a recurring role the year before on NYPD Blue that lasted four or five episodes. When Friends first came on, he and CCA were the only people I recognized. I remembered Courtney from Family Ties.

She was in 3000 miles to Graceland.. which was an ok movie... I didnt consider it a B movie.

He received an Emmy-nod for his work in the first season, and he was the first one with the big movie ("The Pallbearer") with Gwyneth Paltrow.
