921 "TOW the Fertility Test"

The morning after Joey kissed Charlie, Ross seems quite philosophical about it; but Rachel is seething with jealousy - which is not helped by Joey sauntering into Central Perk, holding Charlie's hand.

Ross hides his attraction to Charlie, who apologises for going off with someone else at the party, yet she can't disguise that what she really likes about Joey is his sexual magnetism, not his intellect.

But for such an intelligent woman, Charlie has little idea of how to relate to Joey. Instead of discovering his world, or even opening his eyes to a higher culture, she lets him flounder out of his depth.

Joey turns to Ross, who demonstrates his good virtue by teaching his best friend exactly what to say to her. Joey is an apt pupil, soaking up the art of talking about famous painters, without having a clue of what it all means - but impressing Ross that he learns so quickly.

However, Charlie isn't fooled in the slightest, since Joey took a wrong turn at the museum, and he eloquently talked about the wrong paintings. She admits to Ross that Joey is not the man for her, and reveals that what she wants is someone she has more in common with.

Ross valiantly passes up this opportunity to swoop in, and instead he insists that she should give Joey another chance; since he's a really great guy, while she can always talk art with somebody else. Charlie thanks him, and happily steps out with her new boyfriend once more.

Rachel receives a gift certificate from a new spa, but Phoebe objects to corporate massage chains, then rips the certificate up. Undaunted, Rachel tapes it back together, to go to the spa for a free massage.

However, Phoebe is secretly working there, despite her principles, since they pay good money. Essaying an accent, she instructs Rachel to put her face in the hole of the table, then lets her assume that she's Swedish - but Rachel recognises Phoebe's new shoes.

Revealing she knows the truth, Rachel confronts her, prompting her to quit the spa for her principles. Phoebe agrees, but she's lying again, and returns to work the next day. Thus when she sees that her first client is Rachel Green, Phoebe pretends to be Scottish!

                             ---o0o---

Chandler & Monica have been trying to have a baby for over a year, so it's time for a fertility test. At the clinic, he's very nervous about depositing a specimen in a cup, so she assures him there's nothing to be embarrassed about, since nobody there knows them. In walks Janice.

Janice has come to get her husband Sid checked out, but the Bings cannot believe their bad luck, especially when subjected to Janice's most braying laughs, and then she offers to give Chandler a hand!

But once Chandler has made his contribution, he relaxes, and finds Janice to be pleasant company. Though she warns him that getting the results is the hard part, she assures him that he & Monica will be just fine, since they weremeant to have children.

Yet the results show that both Bings are infertile - his sperm have low motility, while she has an inhospitable environment. Monica starts to cry, so Chandler holds her tight in his comforting embrace, and he solemnly promises her that they are going to figure this one out...

                             ---o0o---

Don't you just love episodes with unresolved bleak endings? Those happily married Bings have been heading for something like this for a while now, and when the blow came, it came hard. However, the tale was invigorated by this season's appearance of Janice Littman, for Maggie Wheeler was on tremendous form. CnM fans must be hoping that Janice's prediction comes true - there are several possibilities.

Meanwhile, Rachel's story leapt to a promising start for JnR fans, then rather lost its way in a slight piece that deserved better.

However, Joey & Ross once again proved what a tremendous duo they can be, with both actors punching above their weight. Though Charlie is little more than a cute prop, she catalysed some marvellous scenes between the guys, giving Matt LeBlanc a chance to show what Joey can do, and enabling David Schwimmer to give us back the Ross we want.

                             ---o0o---

Ooh, who's that sitting in Central Perk between Phoebe & Rachel? It's Emma's pushchair! This becomes obvious after Rachel talks about Ross being the father of her child, and she stretches her right arm out.

Who is Gizzy? The 12yo child of a crew member, or a lucky fan? This episode was aired on May first, and the Magnadoodle board on Joey's door reads "Happy Birthday Gizzy 5:1:91".

Joey's never been very good at telling his left from his right, has he? Could this be a sign of dyslexia?

You know, despite what Joey says about monster trucks, (and that was a funny line), he's a bloody fast study, isn't he? For someone who's being written off as a dumbass, he sure learnt all of that complex text quickly. And not understanding what all those words mean makes them harder to learn, not easier.

Why do Americans hang paintings in museums, and not art galleries?

Why didn't the boys set up a system with secret mobile phones so that Ross could play Cyrano to Joey's Christian? Because this would have made this episode even more similar to an episode of "Coupling"? As it stands, there are many other similarities to the Fertility Clinic episode of "Coupling", which was far funnier, though much ruder.

When Phoebe enters the apartment, look out for Rachel folding some baby clothes, another little hint about Emma's existence.

So now it's Phoebe turn to be the butt of dumb jokes? Wasting money on shoes belonging to a late Shania Twain? That doesn't sound to me like the wily girl who survived all those years on the streets.

And what's up with Monica? I guess she's worried about the coming fertility test, but why is she taking it out on Rachel? First she confronts Rachel in front of their friends for caring about the kiss, and then she tells Phoebe that Rachel wants to go hunting.

Meanwhile, Rachel's promises as a friend aren't worth much are they?

What's wrong with the receptionist's voice? She's nicely spoken, but so what? Or does she only sound weird to Americans?

Mind you, couldn't you just listen to Jennifer Aniston's honeyed tones saying "through the glass doors" all day?

On the other hand, why does Rachel have to go back through the glass doors, when that means going outside the reception area?

Is a large corporate massage spa less scrupulous than an independent massage parlour about hiring any masseuse whose licence is currently revoked? Okay, so that was only for two weeks, but Joey's soap opera party took place the day before, and Rachel's dream can't have been long before that. So, is this really why Phoebe went to work there?

Phoebe looks so good in her starched white uniform, doesn't she?

But with her hair up like that, does she remind you of a pineapple?

Is it like Phoebe to abandon her principles for money? Well, she abandoned her principles pretty quickly for love, didn't she?

What accent was Phoebe attempting before Rachel assumed the masseuse was Swedish? Could it possibly have been Norwegian?

Is it just me, or does Rachel look incredibly beautiful with her face in the hole? Is it because she looks like a medieval princess?

And now it's Rachel's turn to be dumbed down, not knowing the answers to the Swedish questions that she asks of Phoebe.

Phoebe says the spa gives her a four-oh-wonk, which is obviously her way of saying 401-K. So does this mean that Chandler eventually told her that it was a tax advantaged retirement plan, and not a robot?

When Phoebe goes back to work the next day, is she still wearing her Shania Twain shoes?

I don't know how good or bad Phoebe's Norwegian/Swedish accent was, but I can assure you that her Scottish accent was terrible!

In the evening, wearing the same clothes as that morning, Monica asks Chandler what they're doing tonight. Since sex is out of the equation, why didn't he tell his wife that he's taking her & Phoebe to see the one-woman play? This was all the day after the party, yet the previous episode ended with the trio at the theatre. Of course, that could've been on a further night, but they would have not been in the mood..

Chandler & Monica have been trying to have a baby for over a year, so that means Emma is over a year old. What happened to her birthday?

When Chandler says he has a weird feeling about the clinic, is that his stand-in sitting by the door?

Would I be right to suspect that a fertility test should be far more troubling for a woman than it is for a man? An invasive vaginal exam does not sound like a picnic in the park to me.

So, when did Ross tell Janice about Chandler masturbating in a Taco Bell car park? Was it during their brief liaison in Season Five?

And how come Monica masturbated on a class trip to the Hershey Bar factory? Did being surrounded by all that chocolate turn her on?

                             ---o0o---

Wow, both Chandler & Monica turned out to be infertile. That was a shock, wasn't it? Of course, it does seem unlikely, but that's not to say that it cannot happen. More significant is what this means to the overall plot in a thematic sense, for this suggests that the writers are reluctant to undermine the strength of the Bing relationship, as surely would have happened if only one (Chandler) was at 'fault'.

So what now, IVF? Even if Monica "has an inhospitable environment" as it was so delicately put, that doesn't prevent an embryo or five being implanted, does it? So what of Chandler's sperm having a low motility?Does this rule out fertilisation in a petri dish? And if that is so, whose sperm would be appropriate? Not her brother's...

There are stories (again) in the tabloid press that Courteney is pregnant at last. I hope for her sake that they're true, but what if they are not? Is it this on which the Season 10 arc depends?

Did you get the symbolism of the dead barcalounger? While she was alive, Chandler was more sessile than motile, ordering takeaways to be delivered across the hall, to meet a hostile environment in which Monica angrily ejected them to Chandler's apartment. And then when Chandler finally moved into Monica's hospitality, she was hostile to the poor barcalounger, and rejoiced when she finally died...

No spoilers PLEASE from anyone who has seen any future episodes.

Really? So what exactly are we saying, Lewis?

If Monica had a hospitable environment, would Chandler's poor sessile sperm be gently welcomed inside, to delicately fertilise her?

Or would they just flop down at the entrance?

If Chandler's sperm were motile, would they shoulder their way inside Monica's inhospitable environment, then fertilise her anyway?

Or would they be torn apart to die violently?

I don't think we should take this infertility business too seriously. On Mad About You, Paul and Jamie used it for a season or so, then Jamie got pregnant just in time for a new season.

Well, anything can happen in a sitcom, of course.

But it seems to me that the writers have written themselves into a corner. If they stay consistent, then making both Chandler & Monica infertile rules out anything along the lines of "as soon as they stopped trying she became pregnant".

It looks to me like a donor will be required for sperm, and/or eggs.

Not that I've heard of. It appeared first in "The Sun" newspaper, which is not a good sign; and this is a British paper, which makes it worse, since this is an American story.

It was later picked up by "The National Enquirer", whose reputation is almost as low as "The Sun", but they just copied the story.

If anyone does know of official confirmation, please write in.

The work is "motile", which means something is capable over moving under its own control by means of its own power. A shopping trolley is mobile.

That is what Chandler said...

CHANDLER: It means that my guys won't get off their barcaloungers and you have a uterus that is prepared to kill the ones that do.

Well, I didn't actually say that they are, it was just my speculation.

If you know any better than that Phlossy, then please don't say so.

That's "in vitro", which means "in glassware".

Extracting a human egg is a long & arduous process for the woman.

As for the sperm, Chandler's might have a such a low motility that they would need a donor, and the obvious candidate is someone else in the group. Since Ross is Monica's brother, that leaves Joey, who we know has already contributed to a sperm bank.

An intriguing possibility arises if Monica is unable to donate an egg, for a variety of medical reasons. In that case, the egg would come from some other woman, and then there would be no reason why the sperm shouldn't be from Ross, indeed he'd be the ideal choice.

No spoilers PLEASE from anyone who has seen episode 922.

Not that I'm an expert, but to me, a gallery is where paintings are hung that are for sale, and a museum is for pieces that aren't for sale. I'm probably quite wrong, though.

I have been doing some research, and for your information, minks are not very nice!

Aren't Swedish massages supposed to be famous, though?

YES. Infertility tests for men are pretty simple - you've got good sperm, lazy sperm, or few sperm. The only real requirement that I know of is the cup sample. Women have many, many more factors - there's Monica's inhospitable uterus, pH of cervical mucus, hormonal issues, ovulation issues, etc., etc., etc. There are many more tests, most of which involve invasive exams, frequent blood draws, etc.

On the other hand, a woman doesn't have to manage to have an orgasm in a clinic for her tests to be done...

I'm trying not to think about either of the masturbating incidents. Both have some possible facets that I would not care to know about.

maybe in the states, but in europe, the most famous galleries have paintings that are definetely not on sale. my POV would be the following : galleries are for exhibitions lasting for a certain length of time. and museums more for a permanent time.

Well, for starters those two Germans *do *have their differences, for example the German German for Saturday is "Samstag", while the Austrian German for Saturday is "Sonnabend".

For seconds, Marita Bakken who used to post here quite regularly (and hopefully soon will again) is Norwegian, and she speaks Norwegian of course, but where she actually comes from they speak Trndersk, which has more vowels (especially 's) in it. Yes, I guess, we even have a TV show where innocent young women & little old ladies hammer the guts out of hardened used-car salesman thanks to the Car-expert de Bergerac on the other end of a secret comm link.

It's a rather clever very funny quite rude British sitcom.

NBC were considering it as a replacement for "Friends", but the latest goss (as reported on Angel's Friends) is that NBC have decided to show it in the 9pm Thursday slot, rather than make it too 'Family'. This means that they have nothing for 8pm in the 8pm slot for the 2004-2005 season.

True--and unfortunately, I suspect there isn't any possible ending that would satisfy everyone. :(

I can understand why. As I understand it, your "official" preferred pairings are those suggested in TOW the Flashback (R & P, J & M, C & R). However, you often point out that you consider C & M an extremely well suited couple, and that J & R are very good together. It seems R & P are the only pair from those "Flashback" configurations that you actively advocate now.

At this point, wouldn't you be upset if Chandler and Monica suddenly divorced and hooked up with--respectively--Rachel and Joey? It seems it would be a case of "be careful what you wish for."

That's what happens to celebrities. ;)

Ah, a most philosophical suggestion!

But make all the animals "Bruce", all the plants you can call "Sheila".

That's true, and I blame the stunt plots that concluded Seasons 3/4/5/7 which jerked too many fans around, and gave the poor dears false hopes.

Let's hope the new cliffhanger follows on naturally from the rest of S9.

That's right, and I'm glad you put that silly word in quote marks. :)

Well, they are; so I've done what other fans should do, and put my personal preferences to one side, since I'm more a fan of the whole show than I am of any particular pairing.

But I've complained many times in the past when the show has featured CnM stories without having anything good for them to do, which is why I was kinda wondering if the Tulsa story would result in upheaval.

My guess is that CnM stick together like glue since the writers realise their mistake in breaking up RnR in S3, just because they couldn't think of anything else to do with them, so they won't do that again.

But that same theory tends to mitigate against any other couples becoming established, so future progress will probably be reserved for the run-up to a series finale - which might yet be later than May 2004.

That's right, since if it came true I'd at least have one out of three.

In the meanwhile, there have been some delightful moments, such as the engagement photo, the fantasy sequence where Joey & Monica were married, and the dessert stealers living outside the law. :)

And right now I'm hoping that Joey will father Monica's baby.

I agree. It would make no sense in the structure of the show. However, if the fertility issue gradually became a problem, and over the course of a year or so, Chandler & Monica were pulled apart through no fault of their own, it would make great television if it was sensitively handled and beautifully acted. Then maybe there'd be a realignment in say S13.

Lol!

Yes, they certainly made me cynical about story arcs on the show.

Hoping with this show often leads to disappointment. Better to think about something else over the summer and then just take it as it comes in the fall.

"The 'official' pairings of the Tennantlympics." :)

Ah.

Y'mean like Monica surprising Chandler in his hotel room and, instead of finding him zipping up in front of a shark program, finding Rachel in his bed?

I guess learning from that mistake is a good thing.

But why must each friend pair up with another from amongst their group? Why are outsiders doomed?

And if it did happen, you'd say it was because the writers had read your reviews. ;)

And Joey's dream where he and Monica do the crossword together.

But best not to elaborate in this thread, I suppose. . . . .

Ah, you're still holding out for a neverending show. If S10 were to be the last, you wouldn't expect the realignment to be realized. I tend to think that no matter how sensitively nor beautifully such a thing were executed, many fans would be turned off. And many wouldn't view the situation as "no fault."

I do hope you know what you have just said!!!

Absolutely, but at least that did not happen with CnM in Season Five.

Ah, I think you have misunderstood me; which is perfectly understandable, since I was - by necessity - being somewhat elliptical. I did not express any hopes for the start of Season Ten, but for the ending of Season Nine.

LOL!

Well, not quite, (though thanks for the imagery), for I was hoping that both Monica & Rachel would also go to Oklahoma; and then in the evenings Mrs.Bing would be busy cheffing at a classy Tulsan restaurant...

Yeah.

It's the sit of the sitcom, built right into the song.

Of course!

Oh, the list is a *lot* longer than that, I was sparing you the glorious details, (such as Chandler using his nose to call for Rachel), but thanks for thinking of the dream. Of course, the best bit was what came after, causing we JnM fans to hope that he really had fallen for her...

JOEY: (entering) Hey, you guys!

MONICA: Hey.

JOEY: Hey. That uh, that my sweatshirt?

MONICA: Oh yes, it is. I'm sorry I borrowed it, I was cold. I hope its okay?

JOEY: Well uh, it's just that uh, y'know if-if you're gonna be
wearing someone's sweatshirt, shouldn't it be your
        boyfriend's... and I'm not him.

MONICA: I'm sorry, I'll give it back to you.

JOEY: No-no! No! I mean it's gonna be all smelling like Monica!

MONICA: Are you saying I smell bad?

JOEY: No! No, you smell like a meadow. I'm sorry. (He runs away.)

..awww, "you smell like a meadow"!

All the JnM fans were like "squeeeeeee" about that, but sadly the story then turned into the beginning of this whole JnR thing.

Not at all. CCA said after S6 that she would not work for more than another ten years, so I'll try my best to be content with only 16 seasons.

Indeed, there isn't the time.

This is true, but never mind.

Well of course, in mine & Adeline's well-received fanfic "I'll Be Seeing You", the first thing we did was to kill off that Joey Tribbiani...

She didn't know James Brolin is married to Barbra Streisand in 8.01, plus she thought Ed Begley, Jr. was gay. Oh, and she didn't know what Ralph Lauren looks like. I think I'm probably forgetting some other examples, as well. . . .

You missed my 907 review with this point, since you were kinda busy...

Phoebe's best friend is Monica, and Rachel's best friend is Monica.

Chandler's best friend is Monica, and Monica's best friend is Chandler.

Ross's best friend is Joey, and Joey's best friend is Chandler.

..that's IMHO of course, and I think that Joey could be wrong in his evaluation, but a loyal soul like him would take a long time to switch his primary allegiance. That he has not done so yet was most clearly illustrated by the denouement to 918 "TOW the Lottery".

Right.

Ah, if only Ross would learn to learn from his experiences.

You fear she might tug at their tail feathers?

Absolutely!

That's right, and having already proved that he's a good guy, Ross then proceeded to be a very good guy, by making Charlie give Joey a second chance.

There's much debate on this, with the sensible people hoping for something in the middle - more of the same, but not so many that you start getting crap episodes.

For myself, I'm happy to have 20 extra episodes as long as at least one of those is superb - I'll sigh about the other 19 and move on.

OTOH, my brother-in-law is the hugest fan of "Fawlty Towers", which had two seasons of six episodes each - and he insists that it would be totally ruined if there were even a seventh per season, and even if such an episode was just as good as all the others.

And don't forget that USTV seasons are shortening. If there really are only 18 episodes of "Friends" next year, that will be exactly one half the number of episodes in a good season of "Bewitched".

Ah.

I meant lying about having lost it, but your suggestion of her not admitting to her new employer that she'd lost it makes more sense.

Phoebe's remark would be awfully frustrating if it was not followed by Ross's reply; but something as simple as Rachel's dress would be just fine. The problem for many Scandinavians is that the Americans (but not you) seem to think that the whole area is called Sweden.

Marita ruefully says that when Americans ask where she's from, and she says Norway, they assume that Norway is the capital of Sweden!

This is probably why the count for "Friends" is as follows...

Denmark 0

Finland 0

Norway 0

Sweden 12

..we might have had some debate about whether to include Joey eating a danish or not, but even that hasn't come up.

Sigh. :(

I once spent about a year trying to find a word that was the *exact* opposite of "isolation". Imagine my delight to stumble across it...

Indeed, many sitcoms are more 'flexible' about this than "Friends".

An interesting gimmick, should Jennifer Aniston fall pregnant, would be for her & Courteney to switch places, with CCA as Rachel Green, and JA as Monica Bing. Of course, BKC wouldn't have the guts to do it, (but probably the producers of "Drew Carey" would), even though these were the roles for which the two actresses originally auditioned.

I was wondering if you posited that Chandler lied to Monica that it was Ross who knew that Chandler had waltzed in a Wendy's car park.

Okay, with due concern for your delicate sensibilities, I've adopted the euphemism of "waltzing". :-)

Indeed, no worries. :)

It's interesting that Rachel had that discussion with Ross about best friends in 9.01 (Joey = "best friend"; Chandler = "oldest friend") when, in 5.14, it was, "My best friend [Chandler] and my sister!"

Yes (if only the writers would allow him to!).

I'd be worried they'd view her as a hostile creature and peck/bite/otherwise attack.

So your BIL is a purist about this issue. . . . (And Manuel is from Barcelona!)

I know, and I hope this doesn't become the trend. I saw Julia Louis-Dreyfuss (Elaine of _Seinfeld_) on a talk show, and I think she said she was doing just six episodes of her show _Watching Ellie_ this season. And last season (her first), I think she did something like 13 or 18 episodes.

In any event, it's good that she's working again. And maybe she won't get in trouble for her tax evasion during her freelance period.

Of course--how cruelly tantalizing it would be. That's why I so benevolently included that follow-up (and the Phoebe-Ross moment of bonding was for you!). ;)

but something as simple as Rachel's dress would be

Yeesh. That *is* bad.

Gah. How stupid. Sorry on their behalf, Marita!

They could have [address] setting the others straight about Scandanavian geography and give them all a passing mention. . . . .

Of course, Ross's failure to remember the 50 states makes that less likely. :(

Do share!

Do you remember comedian Stephen Wright's line about "what's a synonym for thesaurus"?

Yeah, _Friends_ would never do that. As for _Drew Carey_, I think they've gone so far in the over-the-top, stuntish direction that the show has been mostly unwatchable for a while. Drew in a coma, inhabiting his baby nephew's body, etc. etc. Ick. I haven't tuned in for a while. . . .

But that wouldn't make sense, as Monica knows who told her about it. If it weren't Ross who'd told her, she surely would have offered the true alternative ("Ross, schmoss, you talk in your sleep, mister!).

Awwww. . . :)

But doesn't a waltz require a partner? Would Billy Idol's "Dancing With Myself" be too long? ;)

Yes and now, Hey Jude must have gone on for 10 minutes easily, but the for biggest part it must have been the audience, didn't stop even after the band had stopped playing the song. It was borderline cheesy though, because he introduced the song saying "there's a bit at the end of this song that I think you'll really want to sing along to - feel free to join in". Other than that it was an intrigueing experience for me, after all The Beatles played here in Hamburg for ages before they made it big and I have a huge thing for British music (big surprise there, huh?). When they showed old footage of the Beatles on tour I didn't know whether to look at what was happening onstage or the screens, watching the madness they caused without all the PR hype and everything that surrounds bands these days is surreal. Other highlights of the night for me were "Let it be", "Back in the USSR" and "We can work it out". Ticket was close to 100 Euro, but it was well worth it, after all I don't think there are going to be many other opportunities to see him live and it's the closest I'll ever get to being at a Beatles concert.

Absolutely. These things change over time, though right now I'll stand by my analysis of 907, although during the season Phoebe has been tending to turn from Monica to Ross - which or may not be a good sign for RnP fans.

Of course, but that's on the other side of the wall.

Well, I think Rachel is more laid-back about that, at least if 418 "TOW Rachel's New Dress" is anything to go by; while I guess Emma is doing a better job of getting her up in the mornings.

Yes, he did quite badly, especially considering that Rachel got 48 inside the 6 minute time limit, which is excellent. And for all we know, Joey did well also, since we don't know how many of his 56 were incorrect - Monica gave up after 36, while Phoebe didn't even try.

Did I hear you crossing your fingers? ;)

Sure, but that's the only way these characters are allowed to do anything! ;)

She might have been laid back for herself, but for a baby, things change.

I was *very* laid-back about our cat before our baby came along. But once he did, I was downright paranoid about the cat for a while. A couple of times, I even brought him into the bathroom with me rather than leave him and the baby unattended in the time it took to pee! And the cat was definitely very jealous for a while. Things have calmed down since then.

But, as you know, animals and small children are unpredictable (remember W.C. Fields's warning not to work with children or animals?). An adult actor can manage okay with these unpredictable co-stars, but putting a small child and a farm bird together would be too potentially volatile. Even if Rachel, as a character, were sufficiently "laid back," I doubt the little girls' parents would agree. So they'd be stuck using the creepy robot girl!

That's what they would tell Ross. :P

I think eventually the duck and rooster will reappear some day, acting as if they've been there all along. Meanwhile, I'm guessing we're supposed to think they're in another room. Maybe the rooster helps the duck take a bath. :)

BTW, do you suppose the poor rooster has to endure his original girly name? I hope he's been silently renamed.

I know what we should do. Strap him into a chair, clamp his eyes open "Clockwork Orange" style, then force him to watch clips of Ross Behaving Badly whilst giving him mild electric shocks and other negative stimuli.

(Of course, that could backfire, merely causing him to like electric shocks and other negative stimili. ;) )

Because Basil Fawlty was always mentioning it whenever he introduced Manuel. :)

Maybe there are industry rules precluding such a thing.

Oh I don't. My niece kept a tarantula when she was littler (she used to be afraid of spiders is why) and because it was such a pretty pink one, (it was a Chilean Ros) she named it Mabel. However, after a number of moultings, Mabel developed hooks on her rear pair of legs, and when she was examined by an expert, he declared that Mabel was a boy, since the hooks are for holding the female securely during mating. We all started coming up with new names for him, but my niece would have none of it, his name was Mabel, and that was the way it was going to stay...

Good, innit?

Grin, I didn't expect it to puzzle you. :)

A thesaurus is a treasury (of words), from the Greek word "thesauros".

Oh, the episode is filled with tragedy & controversial issues...

Drew & Lewis deliver a homeless woman's baby in the living room. She promptly pulls a gun on them, and tries to rob them. Drew responds by buying a gun, and making an over-the-top speech about his right to own it. Some latchkey kids move into the neighborhood, and the gang acts irresponsibly around them. Oswald becomes a kleptomaniac. Mimi suffers a recurrence of obsessive-compulsive disorder after losing her clothes in a fire. Wick becomes bulimic. Kate gets a headache, and quickly winds up in the hospital with an incurable illness.

Lewis repeatedly makes insensitive comments, and follows each with a spotlit monologue in which he tries to psychoanalyze himself. The doctor gives Drew a medical book, and suggests that he might be able to find a cure for Kate... but Drew can't read! Craig Ferguson sucks up to the Emmy voters by saying that he thought this episode was a bad idea. Kate falls into a coma, and Drew tries to marry her.

She miraculously wakes up when it is her turn to say "I do," but fails again. She is revived several more times, but ultimately dies before the end of the ceremony (because even in such a spoof, Drew & Kate can never actually get married). A child tries to comfort the disconsolate Drew, but she turns out to be whacked out on pain killers. Drew wakes up at his desk, and is relieved to find Kate is alive.

She tells him that she is gay, accidentally making the announcement over the store loudspeaker (as in the coming out episode of Ellen). Everyone else decides to follow her example, and come out. Several months later, the gang watches the Emmys, and learns that the show lost again. Drew decides to just buy some Golden Globes.

IIRC, that's "Tate" as in Tate & Lyle, the 17/18/19th? century sugar millionaires of whom the former presumably built up a massive private collection that was subsequently bequeathed to a grateful nation, or else he was an early philanthropist. In any case, The Tate Gallery is not a shop owned by a Mr.Tate that sells paintings to the public.

3D paintings? :)

Yeah, coz that's where your car changes colour.

Actually, I just did a Yellow Pages search on art galleries in NYC, so I don't really know details about the examples I've given. Though my father is an artist and I've been to lots of galleries as a result. Usually they're like a storefront, with one story or sometimes two, and often named after the person who owns it (I'm guessing a woman named Denise Cade owns the Cade Denise gallery, for example).

Okay. I figured it must be something historic like that. :)

Jealous Rachel. Did anybody say deja-vu?

It seems to be a recurring theme at the moment. Both Rachel and Charlie are attracted to him, but it's all physical.

I don't think she meant anything by it, though. She just talked about what she wanted to see, and given her background, it's not odd that she wanted to go to the Met. But you're right in saying that she could have tried something else for a change. Besides, a baseball-game can be lots of fun.

It was so sweet of Ross to choose to be a good friend in this story. It's obvious who she should be with, but it's nice that he's decided to take the high road for once.

The first sign that she won't be staying for long?

Ross was so lovely in this scene. No sign of MCB or Mental Geller, he was just being a great friend.

As if Rachel would ever give up anything that's free.

It's probably because I'm Scandinavian and have been to Sweden dozens of times, but the Sweden jokes had me in stitches. Sweden is great. :)

Apparently, money is more important than principles. I wonder if she changed her shoes this time around.

A so-called "surprise" the NBC promos had revealed a week earlier. But then again, Janice is always funny, so it didn't ruin anything about the story. Fortunately, they didn't reveal too much about the ending.

You'd think that Sid would need to go to an ear-doctor instead of a fertility clinic after being married to Janice...

I never thought Janice and Chandler would be able to have a sweet scene together after the whole Yemen-fiasco, but it was really nice of her to reassure him here. Now the writers only have to come up with a way of bringing her back in season 10.

What a wonderful scene for Monica and Chandler, and it's great to see them having to deal with an intriguing storyline for once. It was definitely the best scene of the season so far, and CC and MP deserve kudos for their work. Even fans who hate C+M liked this scene, and that is a rare occurrence indeed. It was heartbreaking to see how Chandler tried to ease the blow by making a joke, and then hugging her in order to help them handle the news. Granted, it's a sitcom, but I had tears in my eyes when the credits came on. It was so sad. :(

It was a brilliant storyline that I knew was coming, but I had no idea that they were both going to be at fault. I'm glad it was the both of them, though, since I'd thought that Chandler was the one with "slow swimmers." (Eerily similar to what Joey said in 801, BTW.) However, seeing that they decided to keep trying, this might bring them even closer together. I agree with Janice that they're meant to have children, so in this day and age, I'm sure they can find a way. And if nothing else works out, I'm sure Phoebe, Joey or Rachel will be willing to help them.

I thought it was quite amusing actually. It gave us some comedy to lighten up all the drama. Rachel wondering about the capital of Sweden was just too funny. :)

Exactly. Ross and Joey were wonderful together, and if Charlie brings this forward in both of them, she should stay for a long time.

Well, a stroller is hardly a baby, but I have a new theory about this now. However, that will have to wait until after 922.

Yeah, I wondered about that one too.

Could be. It would be another explanation why he never was a straight A-student in high-school and was more interested in other things.

Well, it's his job, for which he has even received critical acclaim (i.e. the Soapie nomination).

And unlike this episode, "Coupling" had a happy ending as well. Speaking of which, I saw a clip of the American version of "Coupling" the other day, and while the language was just as rude, they bleeped it out. Also, one of the actresses complained about the storylines being so raunchy. "What am I going to do? My friends from church are in the audience at this taping!" Hmm..

Well, she has to be somewhere..

I wouldn't go that far. Just because she isn't entirely up to date on what's going on in the world of showbiz doesn't mean that she's stupid. She has shown signs of this lack of knowledge in the past as well.

Was it really that odd? OTTOMH she did the same thing in 817, only Chandler was on the receiving end.

She did sound weird. It was the sound of her voice.

I was more amused by her, "alrighty then!" A very obvious hint to her upcoming movie with Jim Carrey.

To get away from all the microphones?

Or Phoebe could have been lying in 919.

She sure does.

No!

Yes, it is. Pottery Barn, anyone?

LOL! Well, I guess Americans could have thought it was a Norwegian accent, but it wasn't. Most foreigners have no idea how to tell the difference between Scandinavian accents anyway, so it's not just the Americans. But it was definitely more Swedish than Norwegian. However, while her knowledge of Sweden and her Swedish accent were pretty good, her rendition of the national anthem was horrible. I feel bad for the Swedes since their national anthem actually is a beautiful song.

When I first saw her shocked face in the promo, I thought she looked like a nun.

Or it could be that she is so-called "normal." I'm afraid people's knowledge of other countries is pretty horrible in most cases. ("Norway is the capital of Sweden, right?" "What does the British flag look like?")

Or maybe she's just working to get that robot.

That's what I was wondering about.

I had a feeling it was awful.

The time-line was all messed up here, but they don't care.

Why should she get a birthday-episode when her uncle has only had 1/2?

I doubt it.

Doesn't "invasive" say it all?

It had to be. Plus, "It was a Wendy's!!" ;) I thought it was a little weird to use "Wendy's" in that joke, but as I thought about it, I realised that it could also be a *big* sign as to where this storyline is going. The founder of Wendy's was after all Dave Thomas, and... http://www.davethomasfoundationforadoption.org/

I don't even want to think about it.

Exactly. I heard some spoilers saying he was infertile a couple of weeks ago, but then it turned out it was the both of them. Otherwise, it could have been very tough on their relationship.

I heard somebody say that IVF won't work in their case.

I've heard some rumours about season 10, so I'll shut up now.

Okay... I didn't think of *that*, but Chandler's joke was funny. :)

I agree, she's a nice woman, just not very bright out of her field.

The Met/Mets thing should have made her think on.

Absolutely, they always look like fun for Homer.

Exactly, his brownie point meter was spinning round here.

Could be - Joey should know he's just a rebound guy. Maybe he does.

I know! This is the way Ross should be always!

Too true, sweetie, it's just not in her nature.

Oh yay, but what a near miss for you, sweetie.

If only Rachel hadn't said that, Norway missed her chance again. :(

Ooh, so did I, that question comes up later on.

You know Marita, I'm quite convinced that the NBC promos are ruining everyone's enjoyment of the show. From what I'm hearing later on, all the best bits are put in the promo, so there's no need for the casual viewers to watch the actual episode, which hurts the ratings.

Yes, she was so great.

Good, but that was a downbeat thing, though.

RPGOL!!!

I think he's been putting his ears in some unmentionable place to deaden the noise, which is why Aaron is an only child...

Yes indeed, since they didn't even meet in Seasons 5 & 6, and didn't have any quality time in Seasons 7 & 8. But she was good with Rachel at the maternity ward, telling her a few (unreassuring) home truths.

Easy - it's about time she won her hat trick!

Absolutely, this is the sort of story I've asking for them.

Gosh, that about settles it.

The barcalounger thing?

Will you ever feel the same way about yours again?

I thought it also neatly summed up their history, in a silly way; while actually conveying the medical situation for viewers who need the help.

And on the far side of the 4th wall, yes I do think it helped Monica.

This is where the couple work so well, the antithesis of WTWT.

Awww... {{{{Marita}}}}

Me too, it was a shock.

Yes, otherwise it could have turned nasty.

Well, of course it was that remark which had us both convinced was foreshadowing, and how right we were.

Grin, you mean Monica will remember to tell him about parties? ;)

Absolutely.

Or Ross - it's not incestuous if Monica's eggs are not involved.

Don't forget that both Phoebe & Joey might also be infertile.

Well, "quite amusing" was about it. There was no hilarity.

Hehe, tailor-made for expat Scandinavians; and another JnR foreshadow.

Ah, but Ross will have to be an even nicer guy if Joey & Rachel get together, and possibly all over again if he ends up with Phoebe.

The main thing is that the baby has not gone the way of the farm birds.

Ooh, intriguement!

I keep thinking of Gizzy Dillespie... ;)

Yeah, although those other things can be pretty damnedy distracting...

Of course. I'm just saying that he's being most self-effacing.

Actually two happy endings, Jane's being more like Monica's...

Oh dear, that doesn't sound good.

Most people in Britain don't even say things like "from church", let alone have friends who do things like actually go there.

But at least it seems that "Coupling USA" is going to be sufficiently racy (in American terms) that it's going to be on at 9:30pm, which means that it's not a replacement for "Friends". S11 beckons...

Okay, so where are Dick & Yasmine?

I think you're right, but which signs exactly?

The "two copies of Annie" thing?

Okay, but she wasn't stop-you-in-your-tracks weird, was she?

What what?How do you mean?

Lol

She could, but why did she?

Because she needed an excuse to sing outside Javu's?

Yep.

Lol, she does!

Compare the way her pony tail sprouts up, just like the leaves in 919.

Ooh, good call. I was just thinking of 711.

Are you talking about most of the time Phoebe was talking, or just the very first bit before Rachel assumed it was Swedish?

And slightly relieved that she wasn't murdering yours? :)

To be honest, a nun was my first choice, but that seemed inappropriate.

Could be.

LOL, all I know is the American engineers I meet are very knowledgeable.

Hehe, that's what working in reception, right?

Can you see?

I think they're the same colour.

Your feeling was spot-on.

Precisely.

Hah, you're being too kind, I reckon Chandler hasn't had any.

Okay.

Well yes, but a vagina is kinda designed to be invaded, yes?

Compare with, say, an invasive lung exam.

Oh, very clever!

And what did Chandler say to the woman he met in Central Perk, in 214?

CHANDLER: I know what you're thinking, Dave Thomas, founder of Wendy's.

That's what Belphoebe said!

Are you worried about the chocolate?

Might Monica have been tempted to dump him? (224)

Or go looking elsewhere? (716)

It would if a sperm was artificially injected into an egg.

Okay thanks, though none of S10 will have been written yet, I guess.

Why would he be a sperm donor if he's infertile? You don't think the doctors would have noticed before they put him in the catalogue?

I thought it was hilarious, but I guess only Scandinavians will find "Iipan, stripan" really funny. I was reminded of when we had to learn the Swedish national anthem by heart in elementary school.

I'm afraid that will be the return of Mental Geller, and this time he'll be here to stay.

Neither do we. It's a very American thing.

You're clearing the schedule already, aren't you?

At a farm in Connecticut.

Belphoebe had a great list.

Yes.

I thought she was annoyingly strange.

"Alrighty then" is Jim Carrey's catchphrase. It made him famous in Ace Ventura, and I'm pretty sure he has said it in some of his other movies as well. Of course, in his new movie, "Bruce Almighty," that catchphrase has apparently been changed to "almighty then!" (Jennifer plays his girlfriend in the flick.)

Because she wanted to throw them off the track.

That too.

You have some weird comparisons, you know that?

No, it was slightly Swedish from the beginning. "Ja, ja..." And even though we say that too, the Swedes have a more melodious language than we do.

Sort of, yes. X-files did a pretty good job at making us look like hairy, paranoid imbeciles, so we're still recovering from that.

Well, nuns need massages just like the rest of us.

Well, I wasn't accusing Americans, just people in general. I like to think that people are rather clever, but I've been asked some incredibly stupid questions about both Europe and the USA. I don't think anything can surprise me anymore.

Yeah, it sounds like it. :)

Norwegian is actually rather based on consonants, which is why Swedish is more melodious. The Swedish queen is German, and she has said that when she started learning Swedish, it was the most beautiful language she had ever heard. It was almost like singing.

Is that the school up in the north in the Potter-books?

Lol.

Heyyyyy. . . . Why does Joey get to be Mr, Almost-Perfect in this scenario? If they were to go with these parallels, it would only be fair that Joey should receive the same treatment Ross has:

Rachel quits Ralph Lauren for an even better job at Isaac Mizrahi

Rachel is working very hard on a work project, with a very handsome colleague played by a special "heartthrob" guest star. She works overtime for two weeks straight, cancelling plans she has with Joey, who becomes jealous and passive aggressive.

They go on a "break," a la RnR, after having a fight about the coworker. Despite Ross's urging Joey not to make the same stupid mistakes he did, Joey leaps to conclusions after the coworker answers Rachel's cell phone when she's in the bathroom. He then sleeps with a pretty extra from _DoOL_.

Rachel decides to get back together, but changes her mind when Gunther (who used to work with the extra's roommate back when he was Bryce on _All My Children_) breaks the news.

A near carbon copy of the original episode (with Joey as the excluded party), but with Ross trying to smooth things over for everyone.

Rachel has a crush on Isaac Mizrahi's new assistant, Floyd.

Rachel tries to entice Floyd with a skimpy dress she made herself, only to be embarrassed to discover Floyd has a husband.

Joey asks Monica to pick up his bride's dress because she has to go out of town for a while. . . . (see below)

Joey's getting married to Kate Miller, after she starts a job at DoOL and their passion is quickly reignited.

Joey says "Rachel" when he's supposed to say "Kate." Ross mutters, "I *told* him to write it on his hand!"

She decided to try. She hadn't tried to sew since home ec in the seventh grade, when she ended up making a blouse with two right sleeves, and ultimately paid Monica to do her project for her.

But this time, she folded a big piece of fabric in half, sewed the sides (so it resembled a big pillow case), then cut a big head hole at the top fold, and arm holes at the sides. Then she shredded up the bottom (to make jaggedy fringes), put it on, and belted it smartly at the waist. (This is how I made dresses for my Barbie dolls when I was a kid!)

The writers decided they wanted to have Joey and Kate fall in love and plan to marry, so they said, "to heck with continuity!"

As much as Ross's wedding showed *he* was still in love with Rachel. Ah.

Yeah, and the whole idea was that Joey would make the difference.

Sigh.

And do you seriously think that will happen?

You can invent new names but really you're just criticising Ross.

Well, let's see how Joey reacts if Rachel should ever reveal her feelings for him before we start judging how he will behave, (or in 4th wall terms, let's see how the creators' writing shapes Joey's reactions & behaviour).

It was Rachel that changed, not Ross. She stopped being "just a waitress" as his Julie/Rachel list put it, and became a successful career woman, and Ross just could not handle that. On the other hand, Joey was responsible for telling Rachel that she needed The Fear, and he was very supportive.

Good.

Then write him with someone who supports him, not criticises him.

And as I've just said, let's see how the creators handle it, shall we?

You were 'allowed' to moan & bitch & complain, but not yawn; since at least our Joey & Rachel story was refreshingly different, even if you dislike it.

So in the old days OriginalRoss was good at telling Rachel how he feels?

Well, it's hard to perceive what you really mean when you argue your hypothetical possibilities so forcefully.

That's how it happened.

That's because I want more for Ross.

Ross was changed, but not during the series, which began with NuRoss, wounded by what Carol had done to him, and tragically unable to trust.

Yep.

Good! :)

Of course, I yawned first. :)

That was the fun Marita & I were having, it doesn't express our expectations.

This is where the Karen scenario comes into play.

Well, we already *have* seen what happens when she does that, and the pair quickly ended up being perfectly amicable again. In the second case, it was Chandler who became enraged, not easy-going Joey.

Joey & Rachel have been living together for three years, and they get on very well indeed. She didn't last five minutes with Ross before she was moaning & complaining; and before long she moved out, seeking refuge.

Always look to the story possibilities.

Okay. Good. That's alright then. :)

Right.

Okay. Just remember that I can't always tell that you're playing.

I dunno, but she turns 42 in a couple of weeks...

Well, I disagree with your "Karen" premise. In any event, suppose their getting along as well as they have depends upon their being very good as friends. Her expectations for a romantic partner may cause a sharp change in behavior that have you wondering who killed "Karen"!

Mayhap the fact that the episodes were so faux should have been your clue.

Well you see, Marita doesn't need to be informed, she just starts playing.

Exactly.

Right.

Consider this from 107 "TOW the Blackout"...

ROSS: I'll tell you something. Passion is way overrated.

RACHEL: Yeah right.

ROSS: It is. Eventually, it kind of... burns out. But hopefully,
what you're left with is trust, and security, and... well,
in the case of my ex-wife, lesbianism.

..then this from 311 "TOW Chandler Can't Remember Which Sister"...

ROSS: What did I do to you? Did I hurt you in some way?

MONICA: What?

ROSS: 'Why don't you call him?!' Well, thankyou very much! Y'know
now he is going to prep her, y'know prep her, as in what you
do when you surgically remove the boyfriend!

MONICA: Are you crazy?!

ROSS: Am I? Am I? Am I out of my mind? Am I losing my senses?? This dreamy guy is taking my girlfriend out for a meal.

MONICA: What?! Ross y'know this isn't even about you! I mean this is
about Rachel & something wonderful happening for her. I mean,
you know, even if you're right, what if he wants to sleep
with her, does it mean he gets to?

ROSS: No.

MONICA: I mean don't you trust her?

ROSS: (lying) Well, yeah!

MONICA: Then get over yourself! Grow up!

ROSS: (shyly) You grow up.

..together with this from 418 "TOW Rachel's New Dress"...

PHOEBE: Wow, Carol really messed you up!

ROSS: Excuse me?

PHOEBE: She turned you into this-this-this untrusting, crazy, jealous-

ROSS: Look, I don't know what you're talking about, I am not a crazy, jealous person.

RACHEL: She's totally right! When we were together, you got all freaked out about Mark, and there was nothing going on.

MONICA: This totally makes sense!

ROSS: It does not!

MONICA: Oh, sure it does! In high school, you weren't jealous at all even though all your girlfriends were cheating on you!

PHOEBE: Alright, alright, so up until '92-93 he was very trusting, then '94 hit, Carol left him and bamn! Paranoid City!

MONICA: Look, all we're trying to say is, don't let what happened with Carol ruin what you got with Emily.

PHOEBE: Yeah. The '92 Ross wouldn't.

ROSS: Well, I still think I was right about that whole Mark thing.

I don't know. Rachel being Rachel does *include* being a nice person, and she hasn't been bitchy with Joey (though she has been with the others), but Rachel doesn't have the same voice that Karen does.

Oh, come on. As if.

That's not a good sign then, is it?

Nah. :)

Okay, but since there are other hapless readers, such as moi, perhaps you could take pity on us and let us know what you're doing when you do this!

trust.

Okay, I just saw this episode again recently. I took this last line to be self-deprecating humor. And don't forget that he follows up with his encouraging words to Rachel that she won't have to worry about that happening to her; she has plenty of passion in her future. And clearly he's seeing himself involved in that passionate future. (Joey, witnessing the exchange, picks up on this and says, "It's nehhhhhhhver gonna happen!" And does his "friends zone" speech.)

Then of course, there's the cat, Paolo, etc.

So, to me, season-one Ross was sweet and even optimistic despite his sadness about Carol.

[ . . . ]

The beginning of laying the groundwork for the "break."

And don't forget [address]'s contribution to Ross's mindset here:

Ross: Hey, Joey. Are men ever nice to strange women for no reason?

Joey: No, only for sex.

. . . . And Ross *does* support and apologize to Rachel later in the episode:

Ross: How'd did it go?

Rachel: Oh well, the woman I interviewed with was pretty tough, but y'know thank God Mark coached me, because once I started talking about the fall line, she got all happy and wouldn't shut up.

Ross: I'm so proud of you.

Rachel: Me too!

Ross: Listen, I'm ah, I'm sorry I've been so crazy and jealous and, it's just that I like you a lot, so...

Rachel: I know.

. . . And she then hugs Mark in front of Ross when Mark tells her she's hired!

[ . . .]

Sure, post-"break" he's characterized this way.

I still don't think he was originally portrayed that way.

Things got a bit tense during the whole "Hugsy" incident, though. ;)

So, were you disappointed, then?

Yes, but the point was that the other four simply supported Rachel in a natural way, Ross did it much later on after he'd been dragged into it.

Well, it's still canon.

That's right, they have conflicts of interest, so they clash, but she remained as sweet as pie compared with the flesh she tears off Ross.

Not really, since Rachel was so cute in 924.

Well, I'd enjoy seeing Joey say "I take thee Rachel" (to Rachel), but then we Europeans have already witnessed that scenario...

                             ---o0o---

I kept thinking of Gizzy Dillespie...

If you're wondering why Americans hang paintings in museums, and not art galleries, it seems that their galleries are mere art shops.

Or is it just that Phoebe lied about her revoked licence at the spa?

Of course, that could've been on a further night, but they would have not been in the mood...

The jokes about Taco Bell & Wendy's could be oblique references to future plots. It's hard to see a connection with a roller coaster making Ross unwell, but Wendy's was founded by Dave Thomas, who now according to http://www.davethomasfoundationforadoption.org/ helps in adoption of teenagers. Furthermore, in 214 "TOW the Prom Video", Chandler joked that he was Dave Thomas while chatting up a girl.

Isn't it extremely unlikely that a doctor's office would give such results over the phone to only one member of a couple? A good doctor would call them both in for a consultation to deliver any bad news.

                             ---o0o---

Wow, both Chandler & Monica turned out to be infertile. That was a shock, wasn't it? Of course, it does seem unlikely, but that's not to say that it cannot happen. More significant is what this means to the overall plot in a thematic sense, for this suggests that the writers are reluctant to undermine the strength of the Bing relationship, as surely would have happened if only one (Chandler?) was at 'fault'.

How about Joey's?

An intriguing possibility arises if Monica is unable to donate an egg, for a variety of medical reasons. In that case, the egg would come from some other woman, and then there would be no reason why the sperm shouldn't be from Ross, indeed he'd be the ideal choice.

No spoilers PLEASE from anyone who has seen episodes 922-924.

Because her gift certificate was damaged?

How do we know she wasn't always bad at geography?

I'd have thought it was her voice that gave her away, as Rachel was suspicious already.

They use a real baby, rather than a robot? :)

One perhaps, but not both.

No!

So Monica could do a 'Phoebe' and freak people out by saying 'My brother is the baby's father? :)

I do really like them as it happens, I also like Oasis (although I still don't have Heathen Chemistry).

A few points,

a) Pyramid Song - strange target because it's not at all weird. Straight forward piano and Thom, hence it being a single. Hauntingly beautiful.

b) To misquote Adam Ant - 'musical progression is nothing to be scared of'

c) Rock has more one dimension, it's not all about bashing away. I think you'll find prog rock for instance is quite interested in progression. :-)

d) Country House stinks. For the best Blur, see the 'Parklife' and 'Blur' albums. Currently waiting on 'Think Tank' to arrive as well.

e) I struggle to see the progression in 'Standing on the Shoulders of Giants', its better than BHN and WTSMG but its still what you'd expect.

f) Everybody knows that due to their lack of progression, Oasis are unlikely to ever better 'Definitely Maybe', hence the lukewarm reviews and waning popularity.

this is bound to go really offtopic, so everybody else might want to tune out!

Not even mp3? ;-)

Probably misremember it then. I seem to remember a Radiohead video on MTV with a really annoying tune to it and pyramids in it

It has to come naturally though and not be forced. U2 tried to go dance or whatever with 'Pop' and failed horribly. My main point is/was that critics seem to want bands to re-invent themselves with every new album and on several occasions they then criticize new albums for being nothing like the old ones - I'm objecting to the contradictive attitude of music journalists

That came out wrong, but I didn't know how to phrase it better. I just can't stand all these "saints" trying to save the world just so they get in the paper or the news or something. Bono has done a lot of good, but if he wants to imporve the situation in Africa he should have become involved in an organisation and not founded a band. Same with Thom Yorke and his lyrics (which admittedly I have limited knowledge of, but I am told the rest is quite the same), when is he ever not complaining about something? He's a "rock" star, that's a "profession" that has a lot of benefits. If he were working on a construction site and had to get up at 5 every morning I could understand his constant complaining, but not the way it is.

Matter of taste. I like it. And it beats "Roll with it" anyday ;-)

It's the worst Oasis album by far. There was a lot of experimental weird sound-effect stuff, especially notable on "Fucking in the bushes", "Gas Panic!" and "Who feels love?". Also note the lack of proper rock song on the album apart from "I can see a liar". On the other hand, it has some very interesting and personal lyrics, esp. "Little James", "Gas Panic!" and "Where did it all go wrong?", the latter two dealing with coming off cocaine and its effects

Be that as it may, but just as every move they made during the mid-nineties was not divine (unlike what British papers would have you believe), I think the criticism is too harsh most of the time. As for waning popularity, the Finsbury shows last summer sold out within half a day (120,000 tickets) and nobody had even heard a single note off Heathen Chemistry then. If that's waning popularity, then I want some of that too ;-)

Yep.

I quite like 'Pop'. Stuff like 'Discotheque', 'Staring at the Sun', 'Wake up Dead Man' are excellent.

Music journalists being hypocritical, whatever next! :-)

You shouldn't pay attention to the vast majority of music journos, they know less than you and I.

Well he uses the status he gained through said band to help achieve things a mere mortal couldn't. But it's another established rock fact that if in doubt think of Bono as a twat.

To be honest, you'd be doing well to make anything comprehensible out of his most recent lyrical efforts. After all the first line of 'Everything in its Right Place' is 'yesterday I woke up sucking on a lemon' which sets the template for finding it hard to find recognisable themes. 'Morning Bell' is about divorce, and 'How to Disappear Completely' is based on a book of the same name, that apart its difficult to tell. I think however that its a narrow vision to suggest that a rock star can't have the same thoughts, fears and feelings as a construction worker.

Mmm, both pale in comparison with 'A Roll With It' by Po Fasis. :-)

No thats what 'Be Here Now' exists for.

One of the best things they've ever done.

Ditto

Just a different part of the Beatles back catalogue.

Which is probably the weakest track. The one that steals from 'Roadhouse Blues' by The Doors rocks a fair bit too ('put your hands on the wheel'), but again isn't that good.

Jan Buxton likes to play a special version of 'Hey Jude', with 25 minutes of 'na nananana' and an extra verse that goes like this:

damnit, do you have to use logic when I'm being unreasonable? ;-)

It was weird enough for me though - generally speaking, I'm not really bothered by Radiohead as far as their music is concerned, if I don't like something I'll just not listen to it. However I do get bothered when these artists get their egos blown out of proportion by the media (I don't know why, it's just the way I am), a prime example is Robbie Williams. Why anyone buys his records - and worse, goes to his concerts, I'll never understand. Quite easily one of the worst European musicians there is, especially on a basis where one considers the money he makes with it. It's not difficult to be a crap musician and make no money with it, but to be a musical pain and become a multi-millionaire in the process is quite an interesting achievement.... Back to Radiohead though, what really wound me up with them was that Thom Yorke always gets praised as the greatest songwriter of this decade and I don't see it. I don't know who the best songwriter of this decade is, but I'd like to imagine there's someone out there who's better than him. Secondly, a lot of Radiohead fans have one hell of an attitude, going on about how superior they are due to them listening to Radiohead, which is not the band's fault but it's something that I associate with them, just as many people think of Oasis fans as the very lowest form of men

Discotheque was horrible imho, but "Staring at the sun" is a great song. I've only listened to that album a few times and SATS was the only track on there I liked

Fair point, but people will quote them as reasons why they think band xy is crap and if you happen to like band xy and you read what that journo wrote about them it'll do your head in, because it's just that dumb

That's why I chose him, but in the end I would have been better off giving another example. D'uh... Well, I'll try again: Surely you've seen/read about all these celebrities giving benefit concerts for some good cause or founding an organisation to raise funds for something etc. I think that 97% of the people who do this, just do it to get media attention. If they really wanted to help, why not silently give the money to some organisation who has experience in that field (there's bound to be one) instead of making a big fuss about it, including a big gala dinner and whatnot that eats up 3/4 of the funds? Or give the money out of their own pocket? They don't all need five houses and 13 cars.

Sounds like a case of being weird for the sake of it to me. What's the second line? Maybe he thought of something Noel Gallagher once said 'if now rhymes with cow, it's going in' ;-)

In the sense of how tough their life is, I don't think they have the same right to moan and complain as others do. They get to see the world and get paid for it, if they feel like they can take a year off and do nothing etc. Name one regular job where you can do these things. Sure, there's other things that can be quite stressful, such as being away from your family for quite a long time during a world tour or people camping at your door, but that's a different kind of thing. It's not the same as someone who's 50 years old and still has to get up at 5 am every morning to support his family.

No no no no no! That's one of these cases where it seems to me as though people just say that because the media says so. (And when it's followed by "all the songs are too long" I just know I am right ;) ) There's no mega standout track on BHN but the overall quality of the songs is quite good, apart from 'It's getting better (man!)' which actually is too damn long

can't get my head round it, I used to get a drink when they played that one live. Fortunately they don't play it anymore

I'd hand that award to either Gas Panic,Who feels love, Roll it over or Little James

You mean 'Put yer money where yer mouth is'. That's one of the few songs I really liked on there.

Well to be fair, as pop music goes, his first two weren't bad.

He is also a showman on stage, so if you like him I can understand people going to see him live. That said he is an overrated pop product and as such has to be viewed with contempt.

Well the greatest lyricist was Richey Edwards. The finest all round songwriter is probably Darren Hayman IMHO. Nick Cave, Colin McIntyre and in a different musical direction Eminem and Dre deserve a mention.

I guess it depends on what % of your audience are the 'lager drinking football shirt wearing lads' (one of the reasons why Graham Coxon hates 'Country House' is because it attracted the wrong sort of people). Obviously this is a large element of Oasis's audience and less so for Radiohead. I don't think Radiohead fans are the worst for elitism, the new/old Manics fan divide is a far more noticeable.

That said I do feel the superiority of following a band that IMHO are important in the lineage of rock (The Beatles, Velvet Underground, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Sex Pistols, Clash, The Smiths, Stone Roses, Radiohead).

"Little boys with dangerous toys, All bow down to the Beastie Boys" 'Freedom Of Speech Won't Feed My Children, Manic Street Preachers

The idea behind gala dinners and the like is that people pay for a ticket (usually attracted by the star present) and the proceeds go towards charity.

Well Dave Gilmour did just that, he sold his London house and gave the proceeds to a Homeless organisation.

Well I was wrong the lyrics are actually,

"Everything everything everything everything in it's right place in it's right place in it's right place in it's right place

Yesterday I woke up sucking a lemon yesterday I woke up sucking a lemon yesterday I woke up sucking a lemon yesterday I woke up sucking a lemon

Everything everything everything in it's right place in it's right place in it's right place right place

There are two colours in my head there are two colours in my head what? what was that you tried to say? what? what was that you tried to say? tried to say tried to say tried to say tried to say

Everything everything everything everything"

Granted yes they can't complain about their lifestyle, but doesn't preclude life itself. I mean 'Creep' was about an intense 8 month (unrequited) crush that Thom had, 'Airbag' and 'Killer Cars' about car crashes and other stuff is about girls/relationships. All stuff that anyone can relate to, Radiohead haven't done songs about 'I hate being in a band and the lifestyle it brings us'. Pulp's 'This is Hardcore' is far guiltier of that.

It isn't because of the length. It's because of the production primarily, there's about 30 guitar tracks on every song. I went to see 'Live Forever' (both Gallaghers good value) and Noel himself summed it up well,

"firstly, where's the bass on that album?"

and

"oh the guitars, whenever our kid wasn't singing I fill the gap with a guitar solo"

The sound of a record made on too much cocaine. There are some potentially decent songs on the record but they aren't allowed to breathe.

The first one did have some good songs, but everything that came after that was just like Take That without the other guys, more tattoos and less dancing

It's not about jumping around like a goddamn monkey onstage though, is it?

That's fairly snobbish, is it not? "I don't like you as a fan of my band, because you like song xy and that's a song only annoying fuckers like" ...

Strangely enough, they only have this hooligan crowd in Britain. Outside of the UK, a very high number of their following are university students. Go figure...

I could argue that Oasis are up there with the other bands y'know... I might even go as far as saying they are more worthy of being up there with the others than Radiohead, whose two last albums (before this one) have been described to me (by someone who considered himself to be a diehard Radiohead fan "before they went weird") as unlistenable

I know. But if they had not held the gala dinner and instead given all the money to charity there would've been loads more. One might say that in such a case you wouldn't have got all the money that you get through the ticket sales, which only proves my point that the people holding and attending these dinners are only worried about having their picture taken and not about any good causes

[snip lyrics] I'm well aware that this is not the norm for Radiohead lyrics, but can you see why I have a hard time seeing him as a great songwriter/lyricist? ;-)

They may not have written songs about it, but Thom Yorke seems to be constantly complaining about it in interviews. Speaking of which, is it true the Manics don't play anything off "This is my truth, tell me yours" because they think it's too commercial/successful?

This is a guy who rates bands like The Coral or The Doves as the future of music and who also signed Proud Mary to his own label - so what does he know? :-)

There's a lot of great songs on there and more and more Oasis fans are finally coming out again and admit to liking it, after years of quoting Noel on why they don't like it. I for one like the massive guitar sound, although on some tracks they do get a little carried away, eg. "Stand by me" could have done with less guitars. Overall it's probably my third favourite Oasis release (I can never make up my mind about the order of the first four releases). "Don't go away" is probably one of their most beautiful songs, definitely better than "Wonderwall".

Oh yes but when it comes to the average English lager lout it's hard not to be.

I think what Coxon was really railing against was the popularity. Popularity can be an uncomfortable experience for an introvert like Coxon.

In impact certainly, I guess you could argue that Definitely Maybe was Never Mind The Bollocks for its time.

But this diehard Radiohead fan thinks they are great and would rank them as the 2nd and 3rd best things that they've done (1 Hail To The Thief, 2 Amnesiac, 3 Kid A, 4 The Bends, 5 OK Computer, 6 Pablo Honey). I admit I might be in a minority but even if you stopped their career at OK Computer they'd be more important than Oasis IMHO.

I don't think he's a great lyricist. I would say that he and Johnny Greenwood (+ whatever the other guys bring to the table) are one of the great songwriting teams though.

I don't think that could be true. It hard to imagine them not playing 'You Stole The Sun From My Heart' as it's a great live track. Their last tour was a Greatest Hits one so I also assume they'd play 'If You Tolerate This...' and 'Tsunami' as they seemed to be fixtures. It is true that the band (well Nicky at least) don't care for the album (quite rightly, it's poor) which is where the 'Know Your Enemy' title for the last album derives from.

Well they're clearly not the future but The Coral are great, and the Doves are an excellent singles band.

I only heard one Proud Mary song (the single I think) which was excellent.

For me I'd go, 1 Definitely Maybe 2 The Masterplan

I never said that. I just don't understand how people can go to concerts and if you ask them about it afterwards, they'll be raving about the lighting or some other special effects. That's not what one should go to a concert for. As for Robbie, imho it is still obvious in his show that his roots are in the boygroup business

I'll have to take your word for that ;-)

Then he shouldn't like any of his fans

Or how they played to 250000 people in Knebworth, the Earl's Court shows in 1995 (the first ones to sell out that venue?) and I think they were the last ones to play Wembley before it got torn down. They've played lots of fairly huge (and good!) gigs and if nothing else they should be remembered for that

Opinions differ, so no point in argueing about it ;-) Are you really sure the new one is the best though? People often say that when a new album by their favourite band is released, give it some time before you rate it

I don't think much about either band. My favourite "new" band is probably Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. What's with all these American bands that sound as though they were British anyway? :)

I only heard a bootleg by them once, didn't think much of them

#1 is a no-brainer, most of the time I'd agree with #2, although at times I'd also rank WTSMG or BHN as #2. So any variation of these four will be my Top Four at any given time. Quite right, I agree such things as lights, costume changes, descending models of stonehenge etc should be secondary. But I was referring to was Robbie's ability to put on a show, some people like him (and say Justin Timberlake) know how to 'perform' and others such as Gary Barlow don't.

There's a difference between fans on a smaller scale (people who bought Leisure, MLIR) and that mass support of the general public that some artists find overwhelming.

Yes, pretty sure.

That's the point when it's no longer about the music though and only about fancy effects and that. In my opinion these kind of live shows have the same impact if watched on TV. Whereas with musicians who focus more on their live sound it has a totally different feel when you are actually there. The last concert I've been to was Paul McCartney; for the best part of 45 minutes it was only him with an acoustic guitar onstage, yet he created a very intrigueing atmosphere (in front of 30000 people no less). All these pop acts could never do that, they have to rely on their costume changes etc. to keep the audience going

I can see why it would be hard for introverted people to be famous but that doesn't give him the right to categorize the fans of his band and class some as lesser fans because they like certain songs.

Yeah, which usually means I don't like the band, but in this case he's quite right

I wasn't necessarily thinking about the sound, but also about the names of the bands. There's also The Strokes and The White Stripes from the US, then there's The Hives (I would've bet all my belongings that they're British) and The Soundtrack of our Lives from Sweden and The Vines from Australia. There's something about all these bands that made me think they were British, but apparently not...

Jan Buxton likes to play a special version of 'Hey Jude', with 25 minutes of 'na nananana' and an extra verse that goes like this:

no no no no no no no, it's rubbish, listen to the demo which is miles better.... Stop crying your heart out is miles better, even if people may say it's cheesy. or born on a different cloud, hell, even she's electric is better than this

He might have been famous in Austria before, he's certainly famous *now*. Have you not seen it? He mixed a song that sounded like a children's song with very heavy guitars during the bridge :)

Well, I'd be hoping that they would take it seriously.
