Ooh damn. That was my birthday. I think I was kinda tired that night. We'd been down to Tucson that day.
One of the reasons. I enjoy the show a lot more now I don't read the group much. I think I just hate people analysing things overmuch. (No offence to anyone here; personal preference only. And before anyone tells me to leave the group if I don't like it, remember that I *did* leave the group.)

The point being? No one cares when my birthday is. Very few people here even know who I am, and even less care. ATF hasn't been a community in the sense where a birthday list is useful for a very long time. And even if it were (and not that I'm denigrating the current crop of posters, the vast majority of whom seem to be the kind of sensible, decent on-topic people that ATF just didn't have when I was at my height), it wouldn't need the birthday of someone who is only reading the group to keep up to date with the progress of a friend, to chat with a couple of friends, and occasionally to deal with lame trollings from someone who apparently thinks he's funny.
Thanks! For what it's worth I'd have mentioned it in email if I hadn't been in America. I kinda forgot just about everything except actually being in America while I was there.
No one would ever "make" me leave. On an unmoderated newsgroup, and without serious grounds to call in the net abuse admins, it can't be done. Sure, people here could make me feel unwelcome, but that doesn't mean I wouldn't stay if I wanted to. Simple truth is, I just don't belong here any more.
(I looked up "anymore" in my OED. :-) It's an American English word, not a UK English one. The correct English form is "any more". And guess what? It even accepts "alright" in strictly informal English. So I can still whinge, but I'm being snobbish if I do.)

Greetings. I don't recall ever 'officially' meeting you on-group before, although I've read a lot of your posts. Generally they scare me because they're too good.
<chuckle> I had several English teachers, who unfortunately tended to have clashing preferences. I was taught by one always to begin a letter "I am writing...", while another would write "And I thought you were windsurfing!" in the margin if I dared begin my letters thusly.
Many thanks! It was an ... interesting experience. All my preparation turned out to be entirely useless, of course, but I don't think it went too badly nonetheless.
What really killed me was getting back home and then having half an hour to change out of my suit, put on casual clothes and get out to the train station again to meet some friends and head up to Nottingham to see Dream Theater play live.
After the gig, we then stood around in the freezing cold for two hours to get our CD booklets signed. We finally got to bed some time around 3am, and then had to get up at 7am. I then spent the day in Derby, and arrived home a couple of hours ago.
Right now it feels like the interviews that took place a mere thirty-four hours ago were more like last month. I'm just about ready to fall asleep...

Oh, overjoyed. The awards thing *will* be going swimmingly as soon as I get far enough with the website that I can't do more until the catalogue is ready. Then I'll attack the Awards viciously until they're done, and then get back to the site.
For what it's worth, I'm growing plenty of ideas.
I'm used to spellings that *I* consider wrong in books, since most of my favourite authors are (or at least used to be) American. I think I just screen them out automatically unless someone points them out. It has led to me picking up a couple of American spellings, though. I didn't know until I looked it pu just recently that we spell jewellery/jewelry differently.

"Thru" is not proper English, American or otherwise. It's an advertising-era degenerative, used as a shortcut (typesetting being expensive), and also because it looks "catchy," like EZ or Pak'N'Sav. No English teacher in the country should let it be used in place of "through."

I believe our definition of "le weekend" is not the same as in France. And we say "la fin de semaine" in my area, probably because I live in a bilingual town and we fight alot to keep our French... I think the Irish accent is the coolest, well some of the Irish accents. The way we like to stretch one syllable it is so cool. We use mostly the British words, with a few taken from the Irish language, like craic (pronounced crack) meaning fun (not drugs), or whiskey (coming from uisce beatha, water of life!!!). There are some cool British accents, like Damon Hill, I think there would be a lot less confusion in the world if everyone talked like him. The coolest American accent, Jay Leno.

Yay, Arizona! Did I tell you you're staying in the city that's typically stereotyped as the most snobbish place around the Phoenix area? If you go to Scottsdale Fashion Square, compared with pretty much any other mall in the Phoenix area, you might see what I mean. :)

It's true! When you go from, say, Scottsdale into Phoenix, there are these signs welcoming you to Phoenix and telling you how lovely it is, or whatever. You probably just don't notice them because you live there, so you don't look for stuff like that, whereas I see it all since I'm a tourist.
Ironically I've only been to one mall, then, but plenty of shopping centres. I've spent quite a lot of time in Tempe since they sell a lot of what I was looking to buy. But yeah, it's been great fun. Have you been up to Hole In The Rock?

The sad thing is that that would actually work. We ordered a taxi from the hotel to Fashion Square one morning. The driver heard our accents, and said "So where are you *chaps* from?" I didn't have the heart to tell him how people from Walsall actually address one another usually.
I wish I knew some Phoenix geography. <sigh> We just keep driving around, and, as if by magic, lots of the places I'm starting to recognise occasionally flit by, but never in the same order. I have a sneaking suspicion that you change all the blocks around at night when I'm sleeping, so it's physically impossible for me to learn the city layout.
Most of my best shopping was done in Tempe. I'm a book fanatic, so it was fun to go to Barnes And Noble and Bookstar... but most of my evil studentish stuff came from Tower Records and some book store I can't remember the name of in Tempe.
There's some good music here. We've been hanging out with a sixty-year-old Cannibal Corpse fan (who works for a friend of my Dad). And I've never been anywhere with a decent radio station before. (I am, of course, referring to KUPD.)

Dad was pretty grumpy by the end of the call. He wanted to go to sleep... But I figured I ought to call successfully at least once before leaving Phoenix. :-) Yep, this morning it's back to Vegas, and then tomorrow flying back to the UK. Actually, where I live (and where Raven was), Friends is shown in syndication in a one hour timeslot, from 6-7PM. We don't have it at 11PM. And new episodes are on Thursdays at 7PM.

I'm in the Mountain time zone right now. One hour ahead of LA. But when everyone goes on Daylight Savings Time soon, I'll be on Pacific time, same as LA. Arizona is one of very few states which doesn't do DST. And yes, I'm sure we don't have one at 10. It comes on from 6-7 on UPN.

Well, ya see, there you go right away! "How are you?"?! That isn't a question anyone asks me unless I'm paying for their medical opinion on how to improve the answer. If I'm lucky someone might actually tell me the price of whatever I've gone into their shop to buy. If I'm less lucky they'll just glare at me like I'm disturbing their rest and they're doing em a favour by deigning to serve me at all.
Well, having worked for quite a while in a shop, I know how dull it gets behind the counter. But trust me. If you work in England, just adopt a surly glare and preferably snarl at customers. It works round where I live.
Actually, I just didn't have a clue when they'd be on air. We didn't buy a TV guide at any point, and I kept forgetting to ask on ATF. The only time I remembered was when I was being cut off every ten seconds, which isn't quite long enough to log into my nwes account.

Depends on the station, obviously... Umm... We have a bunch of national stations as well as local ones. The one I actually have on most is Classic FM, purely because it doesn't play Britney Spears, N-Sync or the Spice Girls every few minutes. But rock is very rare (except in trendy brit-pop packaging, or whatever they're calling it these days), and metal just doesn't exist.
I'll probably get flamed by a bunch of teenyboppers now who love UK radio.
I think some of the stations like BBC Radio 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 webcast, somewhere, but I wouldn't know where. I don't care enough to look, either. Sorry 'bout that.

Poor thing. What I don't get about Macs is why they don't have a disk eject button or a reset button. 'Cos when they crash, trapping your floppy in the drive, and you can't get at the mains power because it's a Uni computer room and they don't like people electrocuting themselves, you can't get the damned disk out!

Nope! There's one on the old website for my Dad's company where you can see me facing away from the camera looking at some stuff on the shelves, but that's about it.

Basically, for books and CDs, especially books, take the price in dollars, say $7 for a paperback, and then convert that directly to pounds without using an exchange rate. So your $7 paperback is GBP7. (This silly Unix system has no Sterling key.) With an exchange rate of, say, $1.67 to GBP1, that works out at $11.69. It isn't so severe for CDs (there aren't many GBP16 CDs, for instance, although the numbers of them seem to be increasing, and GBP14 is the standard at my local CD shop - talking about little shops here, not chains like HMV), but it's still pretty bad.
Happened when I was trying to upload my website. I was logging into the server and preparing to upload, and decided to browse the disk at the same time. I should've known that was a mistake, because the Mac promptly crashed. I know all the keyboard shortcuts that usually rescue a Mac from a crash, and they didn't work. Neither did pressing any of the power buttons, or even holding them down. I couldn't get at the plug since it was tucked behind a load of metal, and I couldn't rip out the opwer cable with my bare hands because the Mac won't let you.
I had to wait until the IT engineer pulled the fuse overnight and then rebooted the whole power to the room the next morning.

Thanks! To be quite honest, I'm not fantastically keen on the way Rick's sites are organised. (He wrote the old D&S website as well as his own.) It's all a bit haphazard for my liking. When I go to a site I want to be able to see straight away where everything I need is, rather than being forced to explore the whole site to find the bit I'm looking for. That's why there's a sidebar site map on my website, and why there'll be another site map on the new one.

You do have to factor in half an hour spent doing tai chi internal exercises, though, which are some of the most strenuous exercises I've ever seen in my life. They tend to leave me unable to go up or down stairs for twenty minutes after doing them.

Actually, there aren't any official regulations about that any more, I don't think, but I try to keep it down as much as possible so it doesn't cost too much. Roll on Altavista's unmetered service!
At the moment I'm building a website, as you know, and I have to keep switching video res to test out the site. I normally use 1024x768, so switching to a lower res squashes all my icons into a little box. The effect is quite comical when I go down to 640x480 and back again. Thank heaven for the Matrox Millennium software - it lets you save the position of all desktop icons, and then it'll restore it at the click of a button.
Sometimes people (myself including) have improper grammer in fanfics to show more emphisis or write how you would hear it so you could understand it more. For example Joey's "How you doin'?" in proper english it would be How are you doing? Which would you use..see the difference? Unless you mean in stage directions.. ~Act

I wasn't referring to dialogue, which, if it is to be realistic, is almost by definition not grammatically correct. But the prose surrounding the dialogue should generally be correct. There are examples where authors use weakened styles to convey a certain atmosphere, e.g. William Gibson, Neal Stephenson, but that really wasn't what Jon was doing.
