Best "Friends" Season?

Now that we've seen every episode of "Friends," what season do you think has been the best?

For me, this is a close call between the first season and the fifth season. The first season had some of the best writing, but the fifth season had some of the most memorable situations, with Chandler and Monica hiding their relationship from the rest of the group.

I'm going to have to go with the fifth season by a narrow margin.

At least that's what I always tell people when this question comes up. The real reason is that S4 has the highest count of Joey and Chandler stories out of all seasons and since they'd been allowed to mature in some situations it made their silly bachelor routine all the more fun when they got to live it out - TOW all the free porn, anyone? :D

I always think about that and I love season 3-5 and the 6th and 8th [Joey/Rachel] and...argh, this is hard...I try and look at it more collectively just because, in every season, you have great episodes, not so great episodes, and episodes you just can't stand..

season 2 all the way. Jealous Rachel was hi-freaking-larious!!

either season 2...the one with the prom video... or season, or season 3....the one where no one's ready

For me it would have to be Season 1 & 2. The gang was really close-knit in the early days. To me the show started losing its appeal when Ross ended up marrying Emily. But it still remained funny and entertaining and had some memorable episodes like TOW everyone finds out.

The first season just had the best writing overall and the sharpness of the comedy was never macthed consistently in another season, although of course there was a number of good episodes in latter seasons.

2 of the cast picked season one episodes as their fav

DS picked one with all the poker and MP picked the Blackout one (my fav ever)

I agree with you, the writing never quite got back to first season levels, but remember, in the first season, the characters were still being fleshed out. I think it was probably easier to write for new characters than established characters because as the characters got older, writers became "boxed in" by limits they had previously set on the characters' personalities and backstories (although that didn't stop the writers from completely disregarding the backstory in some instances, e.g., TOW All The Thanksgivings completely re-writes Monica and Chandler's relationship).
