Episode 615: The One That Could've Been Directed by: Michael Lembeck Airdate: February 17, 2000

Ok, this is the first time I'm posting spoilers, and I don't know how specific I should be. Still I hope you get the gist of what the show was about. One more thing, I have a terrible memory, and I'm also terrible repeating jokes, so please do not think that the show was not funny, it's just "me" not knowing how to tell a joke. I hope you'll excuse me.

The teaser had already been taped and it was shown to us on the screens. Everybody is at Central Perk and they start wondering of how their lives would've been if: Monica hadn't lose weight, Chandler had decided to be a comic writer, Ross was still married to Carol, Rachel got married to Barry, Joey still worked at Days of Our Lives, and Phoebe had accepted a job at Merrill Lynch as a broker (somebody had mentioned to her that she was good at that). So this episode is about their lives as if all those things wouldve happened.

Scene 1: Ross is standing at a newsstand reading a magazine next to an older lady. The lady leaves and Ross puts back the magazine he was reading and grabs another magazine, which we suppose is a porn magazine. While trying to pay, he runs into Rachel, who doesn't recognize him at first. Ross mentions to her that Monica is around the corner and invites Rachel to go and meet her. Before leaving, Rachel asks Ross if he is planning to buy that magazine (I can't remember the name - but it was a funny one). Ross says no and returns it, saying that the magazine was not his, then he gives the money he got back to a kid out on the street saying "No porn for you today!". (They taped this scene twice. The second time around, Ross gets rid of the magazine by throwing it to the newsstand instead of returning it personally. I think the latter was funnier.)

Scene 2: Monica (looking fat as in the flashbacks episodes), Joey and another guy (I don't remember his name, but he's supposed to be Monica's boyfriend) are sitting on the sofa talking about nuts. Joey finds the conversation boring. Chandler comes in and tells them that he's not having luck getting his jokes published. Joey asks Chandler if he needs money. (You can tell that the roles have reversed, now being Chandler the one with monetary problems). Monica suggests to Joey to hire Chandler as his assistant, and Joey accepts. Joey leaves to go to the bathroom and tells Chandler that he doesn't need assistance for that. Phoebe comes in (she's dressed in a suit and a coat - very sharp and professional) and gets a call on her cellular. Before answering the phone she lights up a cigarette. In this episode, she is a chain smoker. She gets upset with the person at the end of the line and ends up firing her (I think she was her assistant). Then R&R come into the coffee shop and greet everybody. Monica and Rachel complement each other and say that they look great. Rachel then adds that it seems that Monica has lost weight, to which Monica replies: "Did you notice? I lost 3-1/2 pounds!". They start discussing how long it's been since theyve seen each other. Ross interrupts them giving the exact date and time when he last saw Rachel. And while he is giving more details, Rachel ignores him and gets so excited when she sees "Joey Tribbiani". Monica tells her that he is a friend and introduces them. Rachel looks very shy and starts talking about the soap opera and that she is a devoted fan of Dr. Drake Ramoray. Joey thinks that Rachel is kind of crazy, but still invites her for a tour of the studios where they film his soap opera.

Scene 3: Monica and Chandler are sitting by the table at Monica's apartment. (The decoration is different because Monica lives alone, or maybe she lives with Phoebe, but that isnt clear.) Phoebe is also there, talking on the phone. She is trying to hire a new assistant. Chandler is telling Monica that Joey is taking advantage of him, by even asking him to wear his jeans just to break them in, and other silly errands. Monica tells Chandler that she thinks that Chandler is "Joey's bitch" now. Then all of a sudden they hear Phoebe screaming. She comes out of a room saying that she just got a call that the market dipped just a bit but that meant millions of dollars in losses. She said "I can't call my boss because he'll kill me, and I can't call my clients, because they'll kill themselves". So Monica and Chandler try to calm her down, but then she says she is not feeling good, and that shes got chest pains, difficulty breathing and pain in her left arm. Chandler and Monica try to help her and take her to the hospital. (Even though, this is nothing to joke about, the scene was very funny.)

Scene 4: Chandler, Monica, Ross & Phoebe are at the hospital. Phoebe is in bed. When Chandler and Monica leave, Ross stays to talk to Phoebe. Phoebe asks Ross about his marriage and Ross tells her that he's having problems with Carol in the "sex" department. When Phoebe asks Ross how long has it been since you know. He started answering: "Well, it's been 2-1/2 weeks" Then Phoebe interrupts him and says that is not bad. But then, Ross continues: " since I stop after two months of trying to convince her." (or something like that, I just can't remember the exact words.) Phoebe then suggests to him different ways of making sex interesting, like: tying each other, playing with food and eating from each other, talking dirty, threesome, etc.

Scene 5: Chandler is sitting on one of those hospital beds, outside Phoebe's room at the hospital. Monica comes in and sits on Chandler's hand. Chandler gets hurt and makes the funniest expression. Then Joey comes by and tells Chandler that he should change his jeans since they seem to be ready.

Scene 6: Joey is giving Rachel a tour of the sets and they run into Chandler. Chandler is bringing Joey his orange juice. Joey notices that the juice has pulp and tells Chandler that he should know that he doesnt like pulp in his juice. Then he starts making comments that make Chandler feel uncomfortable. Joey realizes this and asks Chandler if he was going to throw the juice on his face, Chandler responds yes and that its not all juice. (I didnt get this joke, but everybody laughed.)

Scene 7: Ross and Carol are on their apartment. Ross asks Carol if she thought that him jumping into the shower with her was funny. Carol tells him that they need a second bathroom. Then Ross starts discussing with her about their sex life, when Ben comes in running. Ross and Ben hug and then Ross asks Ben to show him how he can tie his shoes but in his room. So Ben leaves. Ross continues with his conversation about their sex life. Carol is not interested. So Ross starts suggesting to her the different ways of making sex more exciting. Ross starts with the things that Phoebe suggested, but Carol seems less and less interested with each of them, until Ross mentions threesome, Carol immediately tells him that she could do that.

Scene 8: Monica is alone in her apartment and Chandler comes in with good news. The publishers of Archie Comics bought one of his stories. Monica tells him that she wants to give him a present and all she can think of is a piece of chocolate. But when she tries to hand it to Chandler, she doesnt let go and Chandler suggests to split it. Joey comes in with a glass of orange juice and asks Chandler to forgive him for his earlier behavior. They hug and then Monica tells Joey about Chandlers good news. Joey asks what was the story about, and Chandler reluctantly tells him that it is about Archie hiring an assis butler and that Archie starts bossing him around. Joey says that the story seems familiar to him, but still misses the point, and suggests that the story might have been published already because he remembers reading it somewhere.

Scene 9: Monica and Rachel are in the coffee shop and start talking about Joey. Rachel keeps referring to him as Joey Tribbiani. Rachel mentions that Joey has invited her to his apartment and that she doesnt know what to do. Monica reminds her that she is married. Rachel tells Monica that it should feel great to be single and have as many affairs as she wanted. Monica tells her that its great but Rachel finds out she is lying and makes a loud comment that Monica is still a virgin. Rachel tries to convince Monica that she should do it with her boyfriend, and Monica seems convinced. Rachel keeps making comments to imply that it should be ok to go out with anybody she wants. But Monica tells her that still that doesnt make it ok for her to go out with Joey.

Scene 10: Monica and Ross are in Phoebes room at the hospital. Phoebe is in the bathroom. Then smoke starts coming out from the bathroom door. Monica tells her to stop smoking and Phoebe tells her that she isnt smoking but that it is a side effect of the medicine shes taking and that the smoke is coming out of her body. Finally, Phoebe confesses that she is smoking and comes out of the bathroom. Then Phoebe gets a call on her cellular, and tries to answer it, but Ross stops her. Finally, after fighting over the phone, Ross answers. Phoebe asks if it was her boss and if she is fired. Ross says that it was him, that she is not fired and that he is telling her to rest. Before leaving the room, Ross tells Monica, that Phoebe has been fired.

Scene 11: Rachel is sitting on her bed watching TV. She is watching Days of Our Lives, and Joey (or Dr. Ramoray) is kissing a girl. This makes Rachel call Joey and tells him that she accepts his invitation to his apartment. Joey then asks her to bring sandwiches on her way.

To be continued...

End of Part I

And thats where they stop. There were only 11 scenes on this taping. The show was very funny, but if you cant tell that from what I told you, its just my fault.

In between all these scenes, they taped six other short scenes, that I believe will be used for the new introduction that they will have during these episodes. They mentioned that after the taping they were going to go to the WB fountain to film the new introduction of them dancing with their new looks.

The short scenes were as follows: 1) Rachel is walking outside Central Perk carrying a lot of shopping bags, when one of them falls, and she tries to pick it up with her foot, without any luck. 2) Joey is outside Central Perk signing autographs, but instead of people coming to him, he seems to be offering his autograph. 3) Ross and Carol are sitting watching TV and Ross tries to make out with Carol, but she isnt interested. Ross tries to undress her and after so much insistence Carol throws her jacket to him. 4) Monica is in her apartment eating a donut and she starts dancing to the rhythm of Shake it, Shake it. (This was hilarious!) 5) Phoebe is smoking a cigarette, using her electronic calendar and answering a call on her cellular, all at once. Then she gets frustrated for some reason and throws the electronic calendar, then her cellular and finally the cigarette. 6) Chandler is sitting on a bench writing something and he gets pood on by a bird. They taped this three times, once he gets it on the head, and the other two times on the shoulder.

Now, if you are not interested in my comments, you can stop reading now. I just want to share with you my observations of the taping.

It lasted only five hours Ive heard that sometimes it lasts more than that. There was not introduction of the actors at the beginning of the show, because they wanted to keep the surprise of their new looks. Most of the scenes were done twice and sometimes three times. And most of the times they did them because they wanted to try a different joke. It was amazing, but they hardly made mistakes. They are all very professional and they are all very good looking. Unfortunately, I couldnt tell how great Courtney Cox looks, because she was wearing the body suit all the time poor one, she was very hot. Even though, Monica is not my favorite character. This time, Monica was the best, IMHO. I believe, she was the funniest. I forgot to mention that in all the scenes, she was always eating something, and in no moment she was competitive or a control freak. Matthew Perry doesnt look as heavy as he appears to be on TV, on the contrary he looks gooood! The only problem was that most of the time he was wearing a cap and glasses. Jennifer Aniston didnt look too skinny. At the end of the taping, she came out in a T-shirt and some baggy pants, she looked very cute... shes got a tiny body. Her character in this episode was back to the spoil rich girl.

Claire, if you are still reading, I just wanted to let you know that during this episode the "old-Ross" is back and that David Schwimmer looks YUMMY in person -- he looks slim and has a great body -- well thats my opinion.

Something that impressed me the most, was the amount of people hanging around on the set. I imagine some were the writers, but I cant figure out who were the others. Lisas kid and another baby were there as well (very cute). Lisa was carrying her son for a while and when it was time to go back to the taping, she gave her baby to someone else and he started to cry (ahhh!). Among all the people hanging in the studio was the actress Jennifer Milmore, who plays the blonde girlfriend of Jesse (Carrie)... she's petite and very cute. At the end of the taping David Arquette showed up, dressed in the funniest outfit.

Well, I better stop rambling now. Im sorry if I bored you. If any of you wants more details, I'll be happy to tell you, so just send me an e- mail. Finally, if you have difficulty understanding my description of the episode or if you find horrible grammatical mistakes, hope you'll excuse me, but English is my second language.

Was he dressed like a homeless person? Because he was on Leno on Friday dressed like that...he could've come from taping there.

Friday

So that's what he was supposed to be... I couldn't figure that out when I saw him. He looked funny, though. If you saw him on Leno dressed like that, then I'm assuming he came by the studios after taping that show. Did he mention the reason why he was wearing that outfit?

Does anyone besides me even *care* that they're now resorting to the typical tacky 'what if?' episode in order to get attention and ratings, and in the process have left a certain storyline dangling in the middle of nowhere right in the middle of what is effectively a midseason cliffhanger?!

Accept this; they aren't going to resolve Ross and Rachel. They are fighting putting them back together with all they have, but they throw us bones so the R&R faction doesn't go away in disappointment. It is not a cliffhanger. It is an acknowledgement that the tension still exists. I am a little disappointed, I guess, but I'm so used to this by now I'm kind of resigned to it. C&M fans win, we lose. And in the meantime, we might as well see if there's anything else going on we might find fun. And this looks like fun, especially if it give Ross a chance to be nice again.

Personally, I think they knew the happy ending was going to happen before the pilot was even written. The writers' reluctance to put Ross and Rachel back together in my opinion is not due to their dislike for them as a couple or their dislike for writing them as a couple. It is due to the fact that if they did put them back together for good at this point, the show would basically be over for alot of people and no writer in his or her right mind wants *that* "cash cow" gone.

I better put a little spoiler space

just in case

I've been lurking here awhile, but I'd like to jump in on this one--I agree with Claire. There's no point in getting your hopes up too much about a Ross and Rachel reunion--if there ever is one, my best bet is that it will take place in the last episode. Of course The One That Could've Been is a ratings stunt, but it could be pretty amusing. Courteney in the fat suit is always worth a viewing--she seems to do her best acting in it.

You mean they're sticking this midseason cliffhanger between parts
one and two of the episodes with Reese Witherspoon as Jill Green?
Lame. I'm not even sure to what degree the Jill story will move foward/
push back the R&R storyline. Depends on Jill's motives for wanting
to seduce Ross, Ross motives for going/not going along, and Rachel's
motives for making like an ICBM and going ballistic.
As far as BK&C fighting to keep R&R apart, I say it's because they
feel they can get more laughs and storylines out of it, especially with
Ross going nuts. The success of these storylines are debatable.
Ross flipping out wasn't properly resolved (IMHO), and Rachel's
storylines were only mildly interesting subplots.

agree

Ross

I've guessed that too. The only problem is, I've also guessed that the show is lasting 8 seasons: 1 more than Mad About You, 1 less than Seinfeld. That means R&R will be broken up 5 years before they get back together. The R&R faction of Friends fans will have thrown up their hands in disgust and started watching "Jesse" by then.

always

Courteney also does an interesting voice in that suit. As I said once before, the Mad About You episode "Up In Smoke" (where Paul and Jamie discover what their lives would have been like had they never met) is the best example of these "What If" episodes. The One That Could've Been will have to try to meet that episode in humor and pathos to impress me beyond just thinking it is a typical ratings stunt.

Good point, though I think the writing does have *something* to do with it. They've said repeatedly that R & R weren't fun or easy to write for.

The success of these storylines are debatable.

Yep--Ross has become an annoying shadow of his season 1 self, and Rachel's storylines have been a little blah, overall (though I did enjoy the one with the $1000 cat, don't remember what episode that was).

I'm still keeping the faith--I haven't missed an episode yet. They seem to be going in some kind of pattern the last couple of seasons--a few average episodes, one really good one, one total disappointment, then a few more average episodes. I'm hanging on for the really good ones (and for the chance that maybe Chandler and Monica will actually disagree about something for more than 5 seconds).

She's good at making her voice a higher pitch for scenes when she was younger--I've noticed that. Wonder if she'll still do that when she's a fat, older self, instead of a fat, younger self.

I didn't see that. It was my wife's favorite show--the only one I really liked (that I saw) was the one where they were trying to get the baby to go to sleep and the camera didn't leave them the whole time. It was another ratings stunt for NBC, but it was one that worked, IMO--I think anyone who has kids probably appreciated that episode, or at least related to it.

The One That Could've Been will have to try to

It's possible. I thought season five was starting to lag, then all of a sudden, they came up with TOW Everyone Finds Out. At the very least, they've got my curiosity up.

Dan

His season 1 self was incredibly annoying also. Just see Episode 104 where they go to the hockey game on the anniversary of Ross consummating his love with Carol for the first time. i could have hit him in that episode, and half of the other early Season 1 episodes. He is really nice in some of them though. Cheers, Anthony

Even the other two guys got more sympathetic when they realized Ross was remembering his First Time. His whining is out of control NOW, but really, folks, the end of a real marriage that lasted awhile and produced children is very painful. Have a reasonable amount of compassion.

In article ,

I Care! Even though this WHAT IF thing may be funny, I really want the writers to get to the bottom of the R&R story and stop keeping us hanging around. I'm going crazy here!!!! When are the writers going to give us something. It's like they've thrown the story away since R&R went to the judge to get the annulment. AGGHHHHHH!!!!!!

yeah, i miss ross and rachel togetheir! i mean, i love chandler and monica, but it's not the same as my ROSS AND RACHEL! chandler and monica's relationship kept me happy for a while, but now i am just bored and need to see a little r&r action. and if they do anything season finale cliffhanger about R&R and they DONT get togetheir yet AGAIN i might go crazy!

You know what would make me happy now? A relatively little thing. I could make do with them just having a moment alone together, a hug which turns into something more, just something where we get a definite sign they still have feelings for one another and would like to give things another shot, even if it's not dealt with there and then. Two years ago I wouldn't have been happy with that, but now I would be - just because I want to see *something* more than the usual 'they just might' scenario that never pans out.

I completely agree. In the three years since they broke up, my expectations have changed. I hate how they can have them admit they love each other (not to each other, of course) and then just forget it ever happened. Just one scene where they show the viewers that there's still hope is all I ask, and in that scene they should show each other that there's still hope as well.

I think that's it - our expectations in general have changed, and generally the smaller things have become bigger in our eyes. (Anyone *dare* make a smutty comment out of that one and I *will* go Buffy on them. :)) It's almost like Mulder and Scully, except in reverse - at the beginning, the 'shippers all used to obsess over the little things, but are now obsessing over the bigger things. With us R&R 'shippers these days, it's pretty much the exact opposite... sigh.

you know, i honestly thought that rachel was about ready to tell ross she loved him in tow joey's porsche. Remember that? Rach said she did those b/c she loved him and ross said yeah......and then he changed around what he said....... remember how rach looked at him..... gosh I was so shocked they didn't do anything with them then. It made me so mad!!!!

i don't think that that scene was about showing that rachel had feelings for ross. I think it's about showing that ross had feelings for rachel. Because after ross told rachel all the stupid things she's done rachel said,"Wait a minute. I did those things because i was in love with you!" And ross says, "RIGHT!!....(few second pause)..you're right that is different" So in essence, ross is saying you're right, and i did these because I'm in love with YOU!

Anyone else?

Hellooooo!!! After getting drunk in Vegas, SHNOCODY doodled cat whiskers on his/her face and miaowed this little lot at a statue...

Yeah, in essence he was effectively asking Rachel what the difference was between her doing she did and him doing what he did, because they both had the same motive behind them. The original spoiler said that they were going to kiss, but then they took that out - to be honest, while the scene we saw was good, I would have thought that the original version would have worked out better, given what was going on - but then again, they wouldn't have been able to drop it for 8 episodes if they'd gone that route. <sigh>

WHOA!!!! What?? They were supposed to kiss? I didn't know about this!!! Was it like the kiss ross gave rachel on the forehead, or was it like a KISS?

Hellooooo!!! After getting drunk in Vegas, SHNOCODY doodled cat whiskers on his/her face and miaowed this little lot at a statue...

I really do cause mayhem when I mention these things, don't I? :)

You'd have to ask Zeb Ede, because he was at the taping (hi, btw :)) and therefore has more of an idea about it than I do, but it was apparently a halfway kinda thing - supposedly it was just a gentle friendly kiss on the lips that lasted that second too long. Actually, now that I think about it, the whole order of that scene was rearranged from the original spoiler, so I'm wondering if they made cuts for time, in which case WHY CUT THAT?!?!?! :)

Tina

They always do cuts for time, but they *never* would cut out something important like that due to a time constraint. The stuff they cut due to time is always minor, usually jokes that aren't needed for the plot. They probably had a different reason for cutting the kiss, like maybe they decided later that it wasn't right for the story arc they had planned (just like Rachel's cut "I would have married me" from TOW The Kips).

Well, maybe the kiss worked at the time of the filming, but then when the writers started writing more of the season, they realized it wasn't going to work after all.

Larissa

Hellooooo!!! After getting drunk in Vegas, PeachLilli doodled cat whiskers on his/her face and miaowed this little lot at a statue...

But why would they write it at all if they thought there was a chance it wouldn't work with the following episodes? That's what I'm getting at. :)

Tina

-----------== Posted via Newsfeeds.Com, Uncensored Usenet News ==---------- http://www.newsfeeds.com The Largest Usenet Servers in the World! ------== Over 73,000 Newsgroups - Including Dedicated Binaries Servers ==-----

Because maybe they thought there was a chance it would both work and wouldn't work, so they decided to film it anyway just in case. It's only one extra line, not *that* strenuous for David Schwimmer to say once. :) And he did only say it once - they had already taken it out for the second take of the scene.

Larissa

Hellooooo!!! After getting drunk in Vegas, PeachLilli doodled cat whiskers on his/her face and miaowed this little lot at a statue...

I'm not talking about that anymore, I'm talking about the kiss! :) ISTM that that would have worked no matter what, because of the way it appeared to have been set out - it seemed pretty obvious, to me at least, that it would not have led into any major long-term issues that they would have had to spend the following 6 episodes dealing with - just a moment where they were slightly more than just friends, but that had no major effect because it was over as soon as they parted. Now granted, if immediately after it ended they had done the whole googly-eyes thing and they had been about to kiss again before Rachel said her 'I'm gonna need copies of those...' line, then *that* would have had a more significant bearing on the storyline, and I could possibly see why they would have cut it out. (It would have also had me searching the whole net trying to hunt down a movie file of the scene. :)) But as I hear it went, to be honest, I see Ross's lines towards the end of TOW Chandler Can't Cry having more bearing on the storyline as a whole than that one little kiss. (Unless, of course, they cut out all those lines when it comes to TOW Chandler Can't Cry.)

Oh. Sorry, I'm literate, really! (Note to self: Do not post messages while in a rush, especially when there has just been a knock on the door and a little bit of yelling - "Larissa, hurry up or we're going to be late for church!")

I still think the kiss would have had an impact on the storyline, no matter which way they had done it. Maybe you just *really* want there to be a kiss so you'll believe that it wouldn't have, you just want to see that kiss, so you'll think "oh, they could have kissed, it wouldn't have meant anything." If it wouldn't mean anything, why would you want them to do it? And I don't mean just *you*, it's lots of viewers. Plus, if they had left the kiss in, and done nothing with R&R in future episodes, the viewers would be angry at the writers for giving them false hope. I can see it now - "Can you believe those *%!@#&^ writers are doing *nothing* with R&R after having them *kiss* in that episode?!" Viewers are already mad enough, and that would have made it worse.

Larissa

Hellooooo!!! After getting drunk in Vegas, PeachLilli doodled cat whiskers on his/her face and miaowed this little lot at a statue...

Point taken. But they could have done it the way I read into it and not had everyone angry about them not dealing with it by making it clear it wasn't going to go into any long-term 'issue' thingy that was going to go on for six episodes but that *might* have come up later on, and that it was just that one moment where they were just *slightly* more than friends. But like I said before, it would all be to do with the way they staged it - they couldn't, for example, have had them making eyes at one another and looking like they were about to 'really' kiss immediately after and then have that moment lead on to nothing else happening, but the way I'm thinking, it would have been just a friendly kiss, but with that little hint of a spark there to suggest that *maybe* there's something still there, but that wouldn't turn into a flame there and then.

Tina, what it comes right down to is this. Ross and Rachel fans want to know why there *are* no plans to put R&R back together and we get mad whenever we are reminded that our desire is being in turns exploited for ratings, then denied and ignored. Nothing less than a reconciliation is going to make you happy. Not really.

Hellooooo!!! After getting drunk in Vegas, Claire Abraham doodled cat whiskers on his/her face and miaowed this little lot at a statue...

True - the same can be said of all R&R fans, I think. It sure would be nice to see *something* once in a while, though, and like I was saying yesterday, my expectations have lowered somewhat - I'm willing to accept less and be happy about it, so long as it seems there's hope. (I did actually mean to put something along the lines of 'But yeah, you're damn right I just wanna see a kiss! :)' in the previous post, but forgot. Ooops. :))

I sometimes wonder if BK&C just figure "Ah, those R&R fans have
the syndicated episodes when R&R are together to keep them happy.
Let's just keep going with C&M." An US magazine (or was it Entertainment
Weekly?)
article last summer seemed to hint that the only reason R&R got married in
the season finale
was because of some rumors that JA was planning to be or already was
pregnant. I doubt that's true,
but I often get the feeling R&R fans will be getting the "Sweeps String
Along" every
Nov., Feb. and May until the last episode of the series.
The Feb. sweeps story with Jill seems like
no exception, although *maybe* Rachel's reasons for getting mad at Jill
trying to seduce Ross, and Ross reasons for *hopefully* not going along
with her will move the story forward an inch or two.
I still hold to the "no reunion until the last episode" theory, if only
because
of what some writers like MNL have told us: as a couple, R&R are hard to
write
for and they wouldn't want to turn in a subpar story or do character damage
just for
the sake of appeasing rabid fans. (But that also forgets/ignores how well DS
and JA
work together. I actually hope they do another project together after the
series ends.
Maybe a remake of "The Thin Man" or something. But that's another thread.)

That's probably true, sadly. It brings back too many bad memories of Cheers and Wonder Years.

Cheers

James Burrows, director extraordinare, once said that the whole point behind Sam and Diane on Cheers was that they were all wrong for each other and simply would not be able to make each other happy. I'm not sure if this was the "point" he was also trying to put across about Ross and Rachel in the episodes he directed, but you never know. After all, Burrows is now known for producing and directing episodes of Will & Grace, and you can't *get* more "wrong for each other" than those two.

Bobby C.

I think the situations surrounding the three different groups of people are all very different. Ross and Rachel broke up over (essentially) Ross' insecurity, not a core incompatibility or lack of love. (Chloe was a symptom of the problem. Anybody who thinks she was the only problem, and that includes Rachel, is very young, very immature or very shallow.) Now, one might also say that Ross and Rachel broke up largely over Rachel's inability to give as well as take in a relationship. I don't think they were meant to be the core opposites that Diane and Sam were. It's a different show, different writers, different situation. And Will and Grace seems to me about what happens when you meet your soulmate and he/she is the wrong gender/sexual preference.

Hellooooo!!! After getting drunk in Vegas, Claire Abraham doodled cat whiskers on his/her face and miaowed this little lot at a statue...

And can I just point out that Jim Burrows directed TO The Morning After? His 'point' in that episode appeared to be that Ross and Rachel very clearly *did* still love each other very deeply and that maybe they *were* right for one another, but maybe not just at that particular point in time, or that circumstances had dictated that now wasn't the right time for them to be together. That was a painfully clear theme of that episode, and the episode probably would not have been nearly as effective without it. If he genuinely thought that they weren't right for another, he would not have made it so heartbreaking.

I'm not denying this possibility, but it's not the directer's views that the episodes reflect(for the most part) it's the writers isn't it. The script is written, and the directer just carries it out, fixing up certain things and adding that "I don't know what." anyone else?

Hellooooo!!! After getting drunk in Vegas, SHNOCODY doodled cat whiskers on his/her face and miaowed this little lot at a statue...

Um, *no*, the director does a lot more than that. A production isn't *nearly* just what the writer puts down on paper - what you are seeing in every episode is the director's interpretation of that particular script. If the director just carried it out, the writers may as well direct it themselves. (Some do - Kenneth Branagh being one of them - but a lot don't, and for a reason.)

While the director of tv shows does more than just shoot it, tv is different than movies, particularly sitcoms, in which the story and lines carry things more so than in movies (or at least potentially in movies). There aren't director/auteurs in tv like is standard in movieland; it is far more a writer's medium. There is a reason writer/creators get the acclaim in tv that directors get in movies.

It would naturally vary from show to show depending upon the production process. I saw a script for Buffy the Vampire Slayer, in which the staging was precisely detailed by the writer (and duly and quite competently carried out by the director). It may be different for Friends.

In movies, yes. But in TV the more important creative person is the producer (whichis largely a business role in most movies), who may even be --horror, gasp -- thewriter who invented the show in the first place. That's why in Mad About You, forexample, you never saw Hunt and Reiser vying for director's credits, but for *producer*credits.

You're misinterpreting what I'm saying. I'm not denying the importance of the other roles involved in making a TV show, but what I'm saying is that in *any* production, what you're usually seeing is the *director's* interpretation of the script - it might not be so much so in TV, as they tend to discuss it more with the writers, but it's still there. Which is why if a particular episode was directed by someone other than who actually directed it, it would probably turn out different, and why they *certainly* don't just tell people where to go and how to say certain things - if that was the case, they may as well only have one director.

Sorry, but in TV, a director basically works out blocking and camera cues. There is no director's cut of a sitcom. The director's role is to go by the script, which is the product of a number of highly paid people--there's a lot more money invested in the script than in the director's version--sometimes the direct doesn't even sit in on the editing session.

Andy Ackerman directed almost all of Seinfeld, but any input he might have had would have been approved by Jerry Seinfeld and when he was there, Larry David.

Some actors do direct episodes, just to try it out, but it's not nearly as creative in a sit-com (three-camera, often shot on tape) than a drama, like ER.

So even if they weren't planning for R&R to get back together anytime soon, you would want them to get your hopes up really high, only to be let down later? I would think that if your hopes were less high, you'd probably be less disappointed.

I agree. We are frustrated enough as it is. Even having Rachel tell Ross she loved him and then abruptly get over him was irritating. Having Ross realize he loved Rachel this year and then abruptly get over it is irritating.

And I don't mean

Larissa, do you know if the production staff knows or cares in the *least* how many people are upset and how upset they are?

Well, my guess is that they know (I'm sure they get tons of letters and stuff from fans). If they *do* know, I can tell you for a fact that they don't care. They've never really considered what the audience has wanted. Even the R&R getting married thing didn't have anything to do with the audience wanting them back together; the writers thought it just seemed like the best way for the story to go. I know some of them hold the opinion that R&R together is dull, and if they got back together, the same people who are wishing for an R&R reunion would be forced to see them together for a while, get bored with them, and then complain that the writers screwed them up.

Well, the Discovery documentary showed that they can find out a lot of things written can just not work out on the set for whatever reason. I'm under the assumution they just figured "Okay, if Rachel says that, we'll be stuck to get R&R back together once Emily wants a divorce." Maybe DS and JA came to that conclusion, as they know the characters best. Or maybe it was a last minute "No, this line won't work in the long run" thing. Exactly how far ahead episodes are planned, and to what degree they just didn't know if R&R would reunite or not after Emily asked for a divorce is anyone's guess. As I've said in the past, it didn't work out anyway. Not wanting R&R back together in season 5 is well and good. The way it was done in TOW Ross Moves In made Rachel look heartless and uncaring. Moreso. I'm *hoping* they'll bring this up again someday, but I kind of doubt it. Some have said wanting to get a big ratings stunt by filming the show in London screwed up the pacing of the episodes. Which it sort of did. Hooking up Chandler and Monica in London (while rather abrupt for some fans, I'm sure) helped give it some long-lasting importance in the grand scheme of All Things Friends.

Bobby C.

Hooking up

In fact, I'd say that was the only thing in the entirely Emily/Ross storyline that was done well - the C&M hookup.

Because they don't want to put Ross and Rachel back together and they don't want us to think they are going to. It's like when they took out Ross telling Rachel he loved her, too, last year. Because the staff is not really going that direction. I've given up hope. I'm resigned.

Claire Abraham wrote:

Keep in mind they also divorced before November Sweeps. Friends is a great show, and BK&C are talented, but the words "ratings stunt" keep flashing in my head about R&R's Vegas wedding. Having it as a reason for C&M not to get married right away is also possible, but it just seemed to be something temporary, even though C&M moving in together and Rachel moving in with Phoebe are more permanent. Stuff like that is probably there so BK&C can say "We haven't forgotten about R&R." I still say a big reunion is not going to happen until the final episode (which may be this May if those contracts don't get signed!).

Bobby C.

I'm not too sure about the Rachel- Phoebe thing being permanent...I recall one of the producers being quoted in TV Guide as well as Entertainment Weekly before this season started, saying that Rachel was going to play musical chairs by moving in with Ross, Phoebe, and Joey. But then again, they might have forgotten they said that, just like they forget about Ross and Rachel every so often. But yeah, they are definetely entitled to a big reunion in the final episode if they make us wait that long.

When was THIS??? Where was I during all of this? I read the spoilers for both of the episodes, and yet I have no recollection of any of this. Where was I?? Can anybody shed some light on either of these 2 scenes: last year Where ross tells rachel he loves her, and this year when they kiss. Did anybody go to the tapings?

I was at the taping of 502, and Ross told Rachel he loved her too when they were hugging, right after Rachel told Ross she was still in love with him. The script says...

" Rachel: Are things going to be weird between us? Do you think I'm an idiot for telling you this?

Ross: No, no, no. I'm glad you did. If nothing else, it's always nice when you hear someone loves you.

Rachel: That's what I said!

THEY HUG.

Rachel: Thank you for being so... nice.

Ross: I love you, Rach.

THEY UN-HUG. "

And then Rachel goes into this little thing where she says she's glad she didn't give Ross the cassette tape of their songs. If you're interested in cut scenes, you might want to check out http://members.xoom.com/LostFriends. That scene is there, along with more cut lines and scenes.
