Why do men/women like Friends?

I am fairly curious why the different sexes like to watch Friends. I can only offer a male perspective, but I also have a good inkling as to why women enjoy the show. First of all, men probably like the show foremost for its humor, rather than dramatical elements (few that there are). Whereas I get the feeling that women tend to be as interested (maybe more) with the romantic aspects of the characters. Most men I talk to about Friends will discuss the jokes of any given episode. Women, on the other hand, wish to discuss the romantic developments. Although there is nothing wrong with either reason for enjoying the show, it is (or would be) interesting that there is a difference.

I apologize if this sounds like blatant stereotyping, but it has been my observation that this is the case with many people. Don't get me wrong, I thoroughly enjoy the R+R relationship (notice I don't mention C+M-would they kill this off already), but I would watch and enjoy the show regardless of the romance as long as it retained the great humor. Assuming that there is truth to my assessment of what the sexes like about Friends, what do you think about this state of affairs (I knew my Sociology major would come in handy some day).

I'm looking at doing sociology. is it interesting? I love watching people and how they interact. I reckon people like Friends because it is funny, but moreso because everybody wishes that they had just one friend as good as a the Friends are to each other. They are there for each other constantly, woudl do anythign for another. Not many people have friends like that, and everyone wishes tht they did. Cheers, Anthony

It's very interesting. I'm debating about doing an AS level in it next year, and wanted to do it this year but couldn't because it clashed with Drama. I think you'd like it.

Umm... I'd have to say that I like the humour best. Friends is just so funny! I can't say that the romance part is the reason I watch, I'm not really into it too much. Sorry, I just spoiled your theory! Oops!

yes..I know a lot of women who just love the romance but I'm a woman (a young woman.. but still a lady) and I think foremost the humour is the most important, but this cannot giveaway to realism.... else it just gets stupid. the kind of humour you get from the witty Chandler, the dumb Joey and the wacky Phoebe is sort of sophisticated, not sort of nasty comedy or rather rude like many other programs on TV.. (although they are still good.. just not in the same cetegory !!)

I'd have to agree with you on the humor..one reason I dont like Jim Carry is because most of his humor is stupid and unrealistic which doesnt make it funny for me. Friends is the kind of humor I like..humor you can relate to..humor taken from every day life. That is one reason why I like the show..but I also love teh romantic side of it too. Also I do wish I had a friend that I was that close to. Its more the whole combination..Probubley why I'm a fanatic.

it but the jokes too.  I'm nto sure if I seem to focus on one more then the

I think men & women appreciate the humour/drama/romance in the show, but with different priorities. Certainly women find some things funny that just leave me squirming (Ross smearing his legs or talking to Caitlin).

Apropos of the difference in the sexes, I find it very interesting when the women explain their female perspective to the men - how accurate this may be is hard to judge, except that when the men explain their male perspective to the women they're often pretty well spot on.

That's my reaction to those scenes as well, and a lot of the other stuff they've given Ross lately. And the same went for the Ross/Rachel post-breakup feuding.

I think we should add "characterisation" to the list of things people appreciate to varying degrees.

I watch Friends because of it's humor.

Actually, I'm glad you brought this topic up. In my Advance Composition class, we're going to have to write an expository paper (Definition, cause and effect, pro and pro [yes, I do mean pro pro instead of pro con...]). I chose a definition paper, and I'm describing Friends as a sitcom and the many reasons it's popular. So far the biggest things I'm writing about are the comedy, the situations the characters are faced with, and the romantic relationships.

Does anyone want me to post the paper after I write it? (The rought draft is due Wednesday, so you wouldn't have to wait long for it. :)
