With over 90,000 votes in, AOL Poll has Joey over Ross 38 to 36% on who people want to see Rachel with at the end of the show.
They also asked who would be kicked off first if Friends was like Survivor, and Joey and Rachel were by far the 2 with the *least* votes, so maybe people just like J&R the best. Ross had the most votes followed by Phoebe.
Interesting because I thought Rachel would be kicked off early, but she got only 6%.
I wonder if the producers are happy or scared that the poll is so split between Joey and Ross. The other major online poll at NBC had Joey barely ahead as well.
The good news about that is that both camps will tune in to see what happens with this storyline.
The bad news is one camp may tune out once a decision is made, unless it's done really well.
However, if the writers and producers do read Entertainment Weekly, which I'm sure they do, I think the tiebreaker for them will be how popular Joey and Rachel are, with each person way behind the rest in the "least favorite" category, while Ross is way out front in that one. If Joey and Rachel are the most popular characters seperately, I'm sure most will eventually warm up to them together.

To me, it seems like another sign, as if they needed one, that the writers are doing a fantastic job. If it's well-written, the outcome won't matter too much to the success of the show. I think it's a very small minority who would be so partisan that they would stop watching because they didn't like the choice. Anyway, by that time, the show will probably be close to over anyway. :-) Although I wouldn't be surprised if they did a reunion. How about the show ends with them agreeing to meet no matter what every year, like "Same Time Next Year," so the show has a special every year in perpetuity?

Exactly. Its good news for the show because it puts a lot of pressure on the writers to churn out good stuff. They writing won't be affected by fan opinion if these polls are anything to go by.

Having the polls split so evenly between Joey and Ross is the best thing that could happen to both the writers and the fans. For the writers, it shows that they have done a spectacular job making both characters likeable, and have managed to create two believable romantic possibilities. For the fans, these results are great because we are truly left to guess where it is all going to end up. If the polls had one or the other way out in front, it would be easy to predict that that's the couple the writers would go with.

How far that popularity stretches beyond the characters and to people themselves is anyone's guess, but I always found Jennifer and Matt to be the most approachable people if I were to ever see them in person.
But I do agree with you on your assessment of 811. That episode would have stunk in any season, much less the best season of the series. It would have been a long, cold winter if that episode was implanted in our heads for a month of reruns, but fortunately they put out that dramatic promo starting the Joey and Rachel relationship just a few days after that train wreck of 811 aired, so it at least gave us something to look forward to.

No I'm saying, and most every single television critic I have read has said, that the level of writing and acting this season has been the best of the series. The situations they have done this season have been carried with great creativity and believability. And this season has not been all about Joey & Rachel, Ross had some very good stories in the first half of the season, and has been hilarious while dealing with Mona. Phoebe, sadly, has been underused. Monica and Chandler's couple storylines are a little boring, but they have had their time in the sun.
What this season has done most importantly has brought out the most appealing characters in Jennifer Aniston and Matt LeBlanc, and they have carried storylines centered around them perfectly.

My favourite season so far is the 4th, because it featured some of the funniest stories of Joey&Chandler ever, the show was less centered on R&R, Phoebe had her pregnancy and Monica got a new job. So I think that season was pretty well balanced and very different from the 8th season, as it relied very little on ongoing storylines, but instead offered some nice comedy each week. And I have never thought of Joey as "Mr. Big Time Idiot", he has always had his bright moments, the only thing this character sometimes lacks is the ability to link the stuff he knows (the most recent example coming to my mind is 802)
Furthermore I think that the whole "Joey moving out/Eddie moving in" storyline in S2 is still one of the highlights of the show. And I really think that it is time for some "Best Buds" stories now, if this isnt the time for a guy like Joey to hang out with his best friend, then I dont know what could be...

Well, this may just be my opinion, but I think Rachel is Joey's best friend now, Chandler at some point got replaced when he moved in with Monica. I guess that's what makes it really tough is when you fall for your best friend, and it doesn't work out, to try to remain friends. It will be interesting to see, but 817 at least showed some of that natural friendship they have.
