I've been meaning to ask. Who is Freddie Prinze Jr ?? Or Sr for that matter ! Guest 'stars' often go over my head, here in the UK, so I'd like to know who I'm watching this time ! And apparently Tag was a guest star, not just someone who can't act ?

Freddie Prinze, Jr. is an actor here in the states, though not a particularly good one. Some films he's been in are "Scooby Doo," and "The House of Yes." Freddy Prinze Sr., his father was the star of the sitcom "Chico and the Man." I don't remember how he died, but I think it was either drugs or suicide. ________________________________________________________________

Freddie Prinze Sr. committed suicide when Freddie Jr. was a baby. Freddie Jr. just married Sarah Michelle Gellar (Buffy, which is very popular in UK).

As for Tag, I didn't care for him either and didn't find him at all attractive. Originally, Jen wanted Brad for that part, but I don't think he wanted a long-term committment to the show.

oh, and the proper term is "hanged". one of my high school teachers would remind us of that by grabbing his neck, saying "this is hanged"...and then grabbing his crotch and saying "and this is hung" (all boys school...teachers can do such things). we never forgot which term applied where.

I hate to burst your bubble, but according to Webster's, your instructor was only partly correct. Hung and hanged are each the past tense and past participle of hang. However, hanged, through common use, only applies to the act of hanging someone or something by the use of a noose.

So, the sentence, "the stockings were hung by the chimney with care in hopes that Saint Nicholas soon would be there" would be correct, but "the stockings were hanged" would not be correct. This would agree with your instructor.

On the other hand, "he hanged himself" and "he hung himself" are both correct according to Webster. So, in this case, it's a matter of choice.

FWIW, I prefer hanged.

After making a partial correction of this information based on Webster's definitions I found something that leans back into your instructor's direction. I found the following at Dictionary.com.

Usage: The use of hanged is preferable to that of hung, when reference is had to death or execution by suspension, and it is also more common. [. . . root of word clipped . . .] 1. To suspend; to fasten to some elevated point without support from below. . . .

So, it doesn't say hung is incorrect, but it does say that hanged is preferred.

Okay, okay, I got into this a little too much, I know. I'll post this one last item and then I'm off to bed.

Also found on Dictionary.com: Usage Note: Hanged, as a past tense and a past participle of hang, is used in the sense of "to put to death by hanging," as in Frontier courts hanged many a prisoner after a summary trial. A majority of the Usage Panel objects to hung used in this sense. In all other senses of the word, hung is the preferred form as past tense and past participle, as in I hung my child's picture above my desk. So, I guess they utilize some type of usage panel to determine common usage. I wonder how their panel might differ from Webster's panel (assuming Webster also uses a panel).
