-Joey, a main character on the show, has now been reduced to being the "obstacle" in the never-ending Ross and Rachel relationship?

The difference between Joey and Paolo/Barry/Bonnie/Emily/etc. is that the storyline was never presented from Paolo/Barry/Bonnie/Emily/etc.'s point of view. Joey has been front n' centre when it comes to this storyline (including the cliffhanger). If anything, this storyline has helped tremendously in making Joey a richer character.
Really enjoyed the episode, but I was much more involved in Pheobe's storyline with the widower in the wheelchair. She hasn't had this kind of chemistry with a love interest since The Scientist Guy.

They might have inadvertently inserted such a huge wedge in the development of the show that they may never mend the wound. Viewers are becoming polarized. This could keep people watching, but if everyone is angry half the time, will they really be likely to buy the products being offered in the very high priced ads?

Polarization of a fraction of the fan base isn't a bad thing. Whether people love what's happening or hate what's happening is immaterial to the writers. As long as there are people who still care what happens, the writers are doing their job.

I agree that if only a handful of people are truly torn about who ends up with Rachel, then the show probably won't suffer in the ratings. I expect to be able to judge the effect the Joey/Ross situation better by monitoring the response to the first episode of the next season.
