Former Vice President Dan Quayle is dragging out the old family values again. Known for harping on Murphy Brown's single mom status, he recently told Travel and Leisure Golf magazine that he also has a bone to pick with Friends. "I don't think that should be portrayed on television as a good thing," he said regarding Jennifer Aniston's Rachel having a baby out of wedlock. "It's tough on the mother and it's tough on the child - the chance of that child ending up in poverty is quite high." And we thought the biggest Friends dilemma was if Rachel would pick Ross or Joey.

I wonder if he really watched the shows. Rachel has found the whole thing really frightening and stressful, so it has indeed been tough on her. Furthermore, she is currently living with the father, has a very strong support group, and has a good, stable job, so poverty is not actually all that likely - in this particular situation. It is extremely likely she will be married to *somebody* by the show's end. His comment is pontificating in a vaccuum.

I think they did amazingly portraying how difficult Rachel would find the pregnancy and then after wards. She and Ross did the correct thing by living together. The baby has both parents, so I see no problem.

Sorry, but I do not think they did the right thing by living together. If they are not married living together means neither parent is capable of forming a relationship with another person. In addition if one of them did fall in love and marry someone else the child would be in the same situation as a child of a divorced couple. Living together is the worse thing they could do, because the child will witness the nasty way they treat each other and this is the behavior she will learn. In addition if one of them tries to form a relationship with someone else the child will directly witness the pain of the one left at home. If Rachel is not married and committed to the father of her child she should be living in her own apartment.

Married couples technically "live together" and can treat each other in nasty ways as well. Again...problem?

Given that we live in a society that forbids polygamy married couples do not go through the same thing. Married couples promise their loyalty to each other. They do not date other people. They do not try to form romantic relationships with other people. Although I have heard some married couples do practice "open marriages" it is not the norm.
On the other hand Rachel and Ross are not married. They do not have a committed relationship where they see only each other. Instead they are living together in the same household and will be demonstrating to the child the wrong message. For the next 5 + years or so the baby would be incapable of grasping the concept of marriage. The child will assume having mom and dad both in the home means they are like other parents who live in the same hosehold, i.e. married. Therefore the child will be taught the message that cheating, going out with other people, is allowed in a relationship. When you grow up witnessing a certain action, over and over again, you often learn to repeat that action in your own life. This is why children who were abused as a child have a greater tendancy to become abusers.
Rachel and Ross are both single. There is no reason they should not attempt to find a life partner. However, living together prevents them from attempting to do so unless they want to seriously mess with their daughters mind and values. This is a big problem in my book.
