Question: When you posed the legit. question in your original post, were you aware that you were posting to a newsgroup? It seems that if you only wanted the person to whom your question was directed to answer, you would have emailed that person, not posted a message to a public forum that many people are free to read and post whatever they like in response. I think it's really nice that Tennant posts so much! And I like talking to him (even if I do bore him and everyone else rigid, telling stories about "Last Wednesday my cat did a really weird shaped... never mind"), and I don't see why people should be so judgemental.

(Strictly speaking, pm is an abbreviation for post meridiem (two words) or post-meridian (one, hyphenated), neither of which mean midday but let's not get into that...)

Do you remember various conversations about cusps, sidereal time etc etc etc? The earth does not take 24 hours to revolve, and it's caused all sorts of problems with the calendar/clock over the years. One of the quirks of sidereal time/solar time is that the meridian is no longer at noon in Western Europe. It varies, throughout the year, but at the time of writing is somewhere around 1.45pm GMT (ergo 2.45pm BST). It can go as far out as 3pm. Occasionally it falls near enough at noon, but those are the exceptions...
