Joke in Episode One

"Do the words, Billy don't be a hero mean anything to you?"

I don't get it. Please explain.

When Ross says this he is reffering to how long it's been since he grabbed a 'Spoon'. Billy Don't Be A Hero was a hit for Bo Donaldson and the Heywoods back in the 70s, therefore showing just how long it's been since Ross has asked a girl out on a date. Hope this helps u :)

This is a reference to a really bad song from the sixties or seventies in which a young man goes off to war. His girlfriend implores him to be careful, thus, "Billy, don't be a hero." Of course, he does something courageous and is killed.

Ok Ok I'm going to try to stay off the defensive but Billy Don't Be a Hero was a great song! I had to look to be sure and with a basic search found that it spent 3 weeks at #1 in the UK and 2 weeks at #1 in the US and was in the top 50 for the year of 1974 according to Billboard records. Not much by todays standards I know but this was 1974. As for what it is about here is the lyrics:
